Here is an old man who has been longing for home in North Korea.
For Kim Gu-Hyeon and other displaced persons pining for home beyond barbed wire fence, Hyundai Motor started “Going Home” Project.
Using a combination of automotive design technology and Vworld (Spatial Information Open Platform), Mr.Kim’s hometown was virtually recreated including wild flowers and streets where he used to walk every day.
On the day the two Koreas reunite as one nation, Mr. Kim’s journey back home will be accompanied by Hyundai Motor Group.
Hyundai Motor Group has asked the Seoul City Government for permission to build what will become Korea′s tallest building... on its recently acquired plot of land in Seoul′s southern Gangnam district.

In September last year, Hyundai Motor Group purchased an 80,000-square-meter plot of land in southern Seoul from Korea Electric Power Corporation for nearly ten billion U.S. dollars.
Korea′s second-largest group planned to establish a global business center on the land, including its headquarters and a car-based theme park.
Last month,... Chairman Chung Mong-koo laid out the group′s vision to construct a 105-story building during his annual New Year′s speech to Hyundai employees.
On Sunday, the group finally submitted its detailed development scheme to the Seoul City Government.
The finalized plan is to build a 115-story structure that will house the group′s headquarters, offices and other business facilities.
It′s 10 floors higher than the previously envisioned building and will stand 571 meters tall.
Hyundai Motor Group also aims to build a commercial facility inside a separate 62-story building, featuring a convention center, hotel and shopping mall.
If everything goes to plan, the construction will become the tallest building in Korea.
The Seoul City Government says it will convene a meeting of experts from different fields to review the proposal and examine the impact the building could have on traffic flow and the environment of the local area.
Currently, the 305-meter Northeast Asia Trade Tower in the western port city of Incheon is the tallest building in Korea.
The Lotte World Tower in southeastern Seoul,... which has run into a number of construction and safety controversies,... will be 555 meters tall once it is completed next year.

Korea′s top automaker Hyundai Motor Group is losing ground in the lucrative Chinese auto market due to competition from local brands.
The Korean firm isn′t the only automaker suffering either.
Shin Se－min reports.
Despite the steep decline of Chinese stocks driven by the slowing economy，… its local automakers are all smiles，… enjoying robust sales.
Chinese local automakers have put Korea′s top auto brand Hyundai Motor Group to the test.
Looking at the figures，… Chinese manufacturer Changan Automobile Co. sold 446－thousand units， experiencing over 53－percent of growth in the first seven months of this year.
China′s largest SUV maker， the Great Wall Motors posted an on－year growth of 31－percent，… to over 390－thousand units during the stated period.
That′s over 16－and－8－percent on－year growth for Changan and the Great Wall Motors for the month of July respectively.
In contrast， Korea′s Hyundai Motor in the Chinese auto market saw sales drop nearly eleven percent in the January－to－July period，… while its sister company Kia Motors saw over six－percent on－year drop in its sales.
The firms accounted for a total of seven－and－a－half percent market share，...below the ten percent share recorded in May.
Korean automakers aren′t the only companies taking a hit in the Chinese market.
Last month， sales of Germany′s Volkwagen Group declined nearly 30－percent on－year，… with Shanghai General Motors Co. also seeing a drop of 24－percent.
Industry officials say it all boils down to cheaper prices.
With Chinese automakers churning out cheaper vehicles，… at less than half the price of its foreign competitors，… experts say it′s becoming much more difficult to win over Chinese drivers，… with most looking for ways to cut spending due to the sluggish domestic economic growth.

Hyundai Motor Group has announced a plan to recruit 36,000 employees at home and abroad over the next three years.
The group, which commands the country's top two automakers -- Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors, also said it plans to support an additional 12,000 youths to find jobs or start their own businesses by investing 120 billion won ($102 million) by 2018.
The employment plan of the second-largest conglomerate in South Korea represents a 25 percent hike over its average annual recruitment scheme in recent years involving 9,500 per annum.
The group added that under its new overseas internship program, it will send a total of 650 interns to offices abroad over the mentioned three-year period.

Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automaker, said Tuesday it plans to spend 81 trillion won ($73.7 billion) over the next four years on factories, research and a new headquarters. The announcement comes after Hyundai Motor Co. last week forecast the slowest annual sales growth in more than a decade. The South Korean government has pressured businesses to stop hoarding cash reserves and instead invest and hire more. Hyundai said the average annual spending during the four years is a 35% increase from 2014. The company plans to build two new factories in China, which will start operating in late 2016 and 2017 as its existing factories reach full capacity. Its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. is also expanding the capacity of its existing Chinese factory. The group will also build new headquarters including auto-themed exhibition halls, hotels and shopping malls in Gangnam, a trendy district in southwestern Seoul. It said in September that it would pay $10.1 billion for a 79,342 square meter (854,030 square foot) plot of land for the new headquarters that the auto group believes will burnish its brand. The expansion of factories at home and abroad and the construction of the new headquarters in Seoul will account for more than half of the four-year investment at 49.1 trillion won. The group will spend 31.6 trillion won on research and development for low emission vehicles, smart cars and other technologies. By 2018, its affiliated companies will hire 7,345 employees in R&D; including about 3,000 workers to develop low emission and smart car technologies.

The chairman and vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Group have offloaded some of their stakes in the group′s logistics affiliate,.... landing them some one billion U.S. dollars in cash.
Chairman Chung Mong-koo and his only son and deputy Eui-sun sold over five million shares in Hyundai Glovis,... or 13-point-4 percent of equity in a block deal, industry officials said Friday.
The price per share stood at around 210 dollars,... two-point-seven percent lower than the previous day′s close.
It′s also down about 45 dollars from what the family initially offered at their first attempt last month,... which failed due to disagreement over sales terms.
The sale comes as Hyundai Glovis has to meet a revised antitrust law on intra-group transactions.
The law, which takes effect this month, calls for up to three years in jail for controlling shareholders owning a stake of 30 percent or more... if they carry out intra-group transactions that benefit them.
Now with the stock sale sealed,... the combined stakes held by the chairman and his son drop to 29-point-99 percent.
Analysts also see the move as an attempt to raise cash for the son and heir apparent, needed to increase his control in the automotive group,... by purchasing shares in key units.

Hyundai Motor Group has announced a plan to recruit 36,000 employees at home and abroad over the next three years. Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automaker, said Tuesday it plans to spend 81 trillion won ($73.7 billion) over the next four years on factories, research and a new headquarters. The announcement comes after Hyundai Motor Co. last week forecast the slowest annual sales growth in more than a decade. Last month,... Chairman Chung Mong-koo laid out the group′s vision to construct a 105-story building during his annual New Year′s speech to Hyundai employees.
On Sunday, the group finally submitted its detailed development scheme to the Seoul City Government.
The finalized plan is to build a 115-story structure that will house the group′s headquarters, offices and other business facilities.
It′s 10 floors higher than the previously envisioned building and will stand 571 meters tall.
Hyundai Motor Group also aims to build a commercial facility inside a separate 62-story building, featuring a convention center, hotel and shopping mall.
If everything goes to plan, the construction will become the tallest building in Korea.
The Seoul City Government says it will convene a meeting of experts from different fields to review the proposal and examine the impact the building could have on traffic flow and the environment of the local area.
Currently, the 305-meter Northeast Asia Trade Tower in the western port city of Incheon is the tallest building in Korea.
The Lotte World Tower in southeastern Seoul,... which has run into a number of construction and safety controversies,... will be 555 meters tall once it is completed next year.

Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automaker, said Tuesday it plans to spend 81 trillion won ($73.7 billion) over the next four years on factories, research and a new headquarters. The announcement comes after Hyundai Motor Co. last week forecast the slowest annual sales growth in more than a decade. The South Korean government has pressured businesses to stop hoarding cash reserves and instead invest and hire more. Hyundai said the average annual spending during the four years is a 35% increase from 2014. The company plans to build two new factories in China, which will start operating in late 2016 and 2017 as its existing factories reach full capacity. Its affiliate Kia Motors Corp. is also expanding the capacity of its existing Chinese factory. The group will also build new headquarters including auto-themed exhibition halls, hotels and shopping malls in Gangnam, a trendy district in southwestern Seoul. It said in September that it would pay $10.1 billion for a 79,342 square meter (854,030 square foot) plot of land for the new headquarters that the auto group believes will burnish its brand. The expansion of factories at home and abroad and the construction of the new headquarters in Seoul will account for more than half of the four-year investment at 49.1 trillion won. The group will spend 31.6 trillion won on research and development for low emission vehicles, smart cars and other technologies. By 2018, its affiliated companies will hire 7,345 employees in R&D; including about 3,000 workers to develop low emission and smart car technologies.

The chairman and vice chairman of Hyundai Motor Group have offloaded some of their stakes in the group′s logistics affiliate,.... landing them some one billion U.S. dollars in cash.
Chairman Chung Mong-koo and his only son and deputy Eui-sun sold over five million shares in Hyundai Glovis,... or 13-point-4 percent of equity in a block deal, industry officials said Friday.
The price per share stood at around 210 dollars,... two-point-seven percent lower than the previous day′s close.
It′s also down about 45 dollars from what the family initially offered at their first attempt last month,... which failed due to disagreement over sales terms.
The sale comes as Hyundai Glovis has to meet a revised antitrust law on intra-group transactions.
The law, which takes effect this month, calls for up to three years in jail for controlling shareholders owning a stake of 30 percent or more... if they carry out intra-group transactions that benefit them.
Now with the stock sale sealed,... the combined stakes held by the chairman and his son drop to 29-point-99 percent.
Analysts also see the move as an attempt to raise cash for the son and heir apparent, needed to increase his control in the automotive group,... by purchasing shares in key units.

Hyundai Motor Group is involved in what qualifies as a case of industrial espionage with one of its automobile designs leaked to a Chinese company.
A former employee of one of the group′s subcontracting firms is being investigated on allegations that he had stolen and used auto designs and confidential business information from Hyundai Motor Group， after leaving the firm.
Some of the 200 classified business documents included strategies and designs for unreleased vehicles.
″The design blueprint has been used to sketch the exterior， body and the motion of the vehicle， allowing them to easily come up with their final product.″
Another design service company has also been guilty of similar practices.
The representative of a Korean outsourcing company has posted Hyundai Motor Group′s business information on the company′s computer network，… illegally sharing confidential information with those doing business with Chinese firms.
Normally， the subcontractors must delete all related information upon completion of the order.
Prosecutors have so far arrested 22 who had been involved in unlawful sharing and theft of information.
Prosecutors say that while the investigation is ongoing，… they estimated the financial damage from the leakage to be over 70－billion won， or 61－million U.S. dollars since the information was first exposed last year.

Gas prices are the cheapest in 12 years in the US, and green car sales are down in the US and in Europe. Toyota even predicts the inexpensive fuel could cut intoPrius sales, and it's far more established than Hyundai's models. The South Korean company could have an even tougher time because these efficient vehicles still lose money for now. "Our target is before 2020, we would like to make profits on these eco-friendly vehicles," Lee told Automotive News.

Market sources have confirmed that Hyundai Glovis, a logistics unit of the auto giant, has been contacted about a takeover of the ailing Hyundai Merchant Marine.
A high-ranking official of the auto maker said the unit had no interest in Hyundai Merchant, which has nothing to do with vehicles.
Hyundai Group has been working to save the shipping company which has been in the red for years, but the group recently announced a set of self-rescue measures including selling off assets.
Last Friday, shareholders of the ailing shipping company approved a capital reduction aimed at preventing it from being delisted from the local stock market.

The Connected Car/the Autonomous Car are names which are used interchangeably when discussing the future of automobile transportation. The purpose of this panel discussion “A Look Under the Hood of the Connected Car” is to gain some insight into what the current stakeholders are doing in this space. There are Academic Stakeholders, the Auto Manufacturers, the Tiered Suppliers and the 3rd party software system developers who all envision a transportation future defined by the connected car. Each stakeholder in this eco-system has a different vantage point when it comes to the connected car, but together they all are forming the basis for a rapidly growing community.
Speaker Bios
E. Jason Dietrich is an emerging technology and business scout for General Motors. He is a product innovator, business analyst and entrepreneur with experience in automotive, tech, and sustainable transportation. His expertise includes identifying new market opportunities, launching products and evaluating business models for automotive and tech products. Jason received a BA in English Literature at Michigan and an MBA from Michigan - Stephen M. Ross School of Business which included the MBA Exchange Program with the IESE Business School - University of Navarra.
Divya Toopran is a Software Engineer at the Toyota InfoTechnology Center (ITC). Divya has submitted patents on Speech Recognition and Proactive Zone Information. She has a Bachelor of Technology in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and a MS in Computer Engineering from SJSU.
Nick Sugimoto is the Senior Program Director of Honda Silicon Valley Lab, the open innovation lab of global Honda R&D;. Nick oversees Honda’s advanced information technology R&D; in Silicon Valley, as well as, strategic partnership globally. Previously, Nick led the corporate venture capital program at Honda where he invested in many innovative startup companies and built strategic R&D; partnerships. Prior to that, Nick was a successful entrepreneur leading a series of tech venture companies in both the US and Japan. Nick received his engineering degree from the University of Tokyo and MBA from Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.
John Suh joined Hyundai Ventures, part of the Hyundai Motor Group, in 2011. Prior to that, he was a Technology and Investment Manager at GM. At Hyundai Ventures, he focuses on strategic, equity investments and external partnerships for accelerating innovation in the following areas: 1) Intersection of mobile devices, apps and digital media, mobile commerce, and automotive industries, 2) cleantech with automotive applications, 3) intelligent systems and technologies, and 4) new business models in automotive development, supply chain, and personal mobility. John works at the intersection of the automotive and Silicon Valley tech industries. John received his B.S. in EE at Kettering University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford.
Steve Goldberg joined Venrock in 2009 after having been CEO of several early stage companies including DataRunway, Vidient, Arcwave and CoWave Networks. Prior to that, he was Vice President of R&D; at Nokia Internet Communications and VP and General Manager of the Wireless Communications Division at Cylink Corporation. Steve also held senior management and engineering positions at Trimble Navigation and HP. At Venrock, Steve focuses on investments in connectivity, M2M/Internet of Things, robotics and embedded systems. He sits on the Board of Asoka, FutureDial, Red Seal, and Quantenna Communications. Previous board seats include Canesta (Microsoft), Kineto Wireless (Taqua), Newport Media (Atmel), and Teranetics (PLX Technology). Steve received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Washington and his Ph.D. in EE from UCSB.
