MIAMI (CBSMiami) — A teen is in custody following a two county chase that lasted more than an hour on Tuesday.
Fifteen-year-old
Alan Moss is charged in the chase that spanned Miami-Dade and
Broward County.
Moss was taken down to the
Juvenile Assessment
Center in
Miami where
Miami-Dade police said he made a full confession.
The chase began after a white
2013 Chevy Tahoe was reported stolen in the 11900 block of SW 185
Street.
Officers had spotted the
SUV near Goulds
Park and attempted a traffic stop, to no avail.
A white SUV was seen driving down the turnpike at
184th Street and
Florida’s Turnpike, eventually making its way to the
Don Shula Expressway.
The SUV weaved in and out of traffic and made its way to the
Palmetto Expressway (SR-826) as a police cruiser was on its tail.
At one
point, SUV circled off and back onto the expressway.
Moments later, the driver got off the expressway, driving onto oncoming traffic and barely missing a pedestrian on a crosswalk.
Around 125th Street and
22nd Avenue, the SUV was seen speeding through a residential area with what looked like a
Miami Gardens officer chasing the driver.
The chase continued into Broward County, driving onto
I-95 using the exit ramp on
Pembroke Road, then turning to head south and later exiting on
Ives Dairy Road.
Moments later, the driver got back on I-95 but this time headed northbound and got off on the
Griffin Road exit. Then got back on again but on the southbound lanes headed back to
Miami-Dade County.
At one point, the driver encountered major traffic but got through it quite quickly, eventually getting off of I-95 at
Hallandale Beach Boulevard.
The SUV seemed to be driving around aimlessly in Miami Gardens at one point.
Minutes later, the driver’s tire blew out, causing the SUV to spin out but the driver continued, speeding off while an officer in another SUV tried to block him off.
The suspect came close to several pedestrians.
Seventeen-year-old
Lavares Frager said he jumped onto the sidewalk when he say the
Tahoe blow a tire and start skidding through the intersection.
“He’s sliding, I didn’t even know. I’m thinking, there’s a random car just sliding past. He almost whacked me,” Frager told
CBS4’s
Natalia Zea.
Fellow pedestrian
Azhar Koliwala was stunned by the chase.
“He could’ve hit anybody, that could’ve been someone’s mother someone’s daughter, thank God he didn’t hit anybody and cause any casualties,” said Koliwala.
The driver kept going with three tires and just a rim, not letting up as a police SUV drove next to it, turning from high-speed chase to a low-speed chase.
That gave authorities a chance to close in on the driver, with at least 9 cars being used to block the SUV just before 1:50 p.m. The driver slowed and tried to get out as law enforcement had their guns drawn.
Moss is charged with grand theft (
Auto), fleeing and eluding, aggravated assault and no valid driver’s license.
Police said earlier the SUV had rammed one
Homestead police unmarked car and several other cars. No injuries were reported
