How Jacob became Israel?
When we look at the names of Biblical characters in Hebrew we see the things that cannot be seen in translation. Take for example, the story of Jacob being transformed into Israel.
Jacob's name in Hebrew (יַעֲקב YAKoV) was connected with the word for "heel" (עָקֵב AKeV) . You remember that when baby Esau first came out, the midwife could not believe her eyes: his sibling brother was holding Esau by his heel not willing to let him go! Seeing their child grasping his brother by the heel Rebecca and Isaac called him -- Yakov (Jacob).
Jacob's birth defined his life until another event of even greater significance -- his personal encounter with a very special messenger. He is known in the Bible as the Angel of the LORD (Gen.32).
Just like at his birth, now too Jacob held on rather hard to someone! This time not to his older brother, but to the Angel of the LORD himself. Jacob demanded that he would finally be granted something that he was not given as a child -- the mighty blessing he so greatly valued and passionately desired. Seeing Jacob's persistence and utmost commitment, the Angel of the LORD granted Jacob his request by blessings him.
To show that there has been a real change in Jacob's life. The Angel of the LORD gave Jacob a completely new name -- יִשְׂרָאֵל Yisra'el (Israel). They key to understanding this is hidden in this names original Hebrew meaning. The Word יִשְׂרָאֵל yiSRaEL is related to the verb לִשְׂרות Lisrot which in Biblical Hebrew means to struggle, to strive, to exercise influence, in this context, with God Himself! (Gen.32:30) So important was this event in world history that the nation descending from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob was named after this particular encounter. These decedents will be forever known as the People of Israel, the People that Struggle with God.

Jacob
Jacob (later given the name Israel) is regarded as a Patriarch of the Israelites. According to the Book of Genesis, Jacob (/ˈdʒeɪkəb/; Hebrew: יַעֲקֹב Standard Yaʿakov) was the third Hebrew progenitor with whom God made a covenant. He is the son of Isaac and Rebecca, the grandson of Abraham, Sarah and of Bethuel, and the younger twin brother of Esau. Jacob had twelve sons and at least one daughter, by his two wives, Leah and Rachel, and by their handmaidens Bilhah and Zilpah.
Jacob's twelve sons, named in Genesis, were Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, and Benjamin. His only daughter mentioned in Genesis is Dinah. The twelve sons became the progenitors of the "Tribes of Israel".
As a result of a severe drought in Canaan, Jacob and his sons moved to Egypt at the time when his son Joseph was viceroy. After 17 years in Egypt, Jacob died and Joseph carried Jacob's remains to the land of Canaan, and gave him a stately burial in the same Cave of Machpelah as were buried Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, and Jacob's first wife, Leah.

They key to understanding this is hidden in this names original Hebrew meaning. The Word יִשְׂרָאֵל yiSRaEL is related to the verb לִשְׂרות Lisrot which in Biblical Hebrew means to struggle, to strive, to exercise influence, in this context, with God Himself! Jacob which his name means 'heel catcher' 'cheater or one who takes the place of another' does exactly that with Esau and cheats Esau from his birthright and father's blessing.
At the age of 77 Jacob flees to Haran where Abram sojourned from and works for his Uncle Laban. Jacob works for 7 sevens for the wages of Rachel who Jacob loved. But Laban teaches Jacob a lesson about the first-born so Jacob actually marries Laban's first daughter Leah but doesn't know it till after lying with her. Then Jacob finally marries Rachel but has to work another 7 years. He does get paid though with live stock and God blesses him much to Laban's frustration. He loses favour with Laban and leaves Haran after working for Laban for 20 years. During that time working for Laban within a short space of time of six years Jacob has eleven sons and one daughter. Later on Rachel will have another son which in total made up 12 sons which later on become 'The twelve tribes of Israel.'
Jacob and Uncle Laban sort out their differences and make an oath together, 'you stay on that side, I'll stay on this' type of thing.
Our focus today is on this next Chapter in Genesis, Chapter 32.

The twins reconcile and Esau gives Jacobs gift back and tells him he has enough but Israel insists, and Esau takes them. Esau goes back home and Israel goes to Succoth and then Shechem. Some bad stuff happens to Israel's daughter Dinah and the two bros Simeon and Levi kill all the males in Shechem. Jacob knows he and his family better get out of there and God tells Israel to go to Bethel. God speaks with Israel at Bethel.

Then on the way to Ephrath (Bethlehem) Rachel gave birth to Benjamin.

Hos 11:1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him and called My son out of Egypt.
The person Israel becomes the nation Israel through the twelve sons that become twelve tribes then grouped into a nation. But we see here that Israel also refers to Jesus Christ. We see a similar thing happen in the book of Revelation.

Joseph who was born from Rachel shared a dream.
Gen 37:9-10
Jacob becomes the moon and Rachel (Joseph's mum) becomes the sun the twelve stars are the twelve tribes of Israel. The son of Israel is 'The Christ' which will rule with an iron rod and is caught up to God to rule at God's right hand. Remember Rachel's other son was called Benoni 'son of sorrow' I think speaking of the sorrow of the Cross for Jesus but Jacob changed it to Benjamin 'son of my right hand' which is where Jesus is now. Awesome.
Jesus Christ is the promised seed of Abraham and referred to as 'Israel' whom God loved and called Him out of Egypt. Israel means Prince with God and so there is no problem with God referring to Jesus as 'Israel' for He is the Prince of Peace and the Lord of Lords.
We as Christians or Disciples of Jesus Christ are challenged to walk in the footsteps of our Master. Have we wrestled with man and God and overcome like Israel, wrestling with Laban and Esau and even God. Like Jesus wrestling with the leaders of his day and God at the Garden of Gethsemane. God blessed Jacob and changed his name to Israel and God delivered Jesus from the power of death and exalted Him to His own right hand in Heaven, so we to can walk in victory as we walk in the footsteps of our Master Jesus Christ. Some commentators say the name comes from the verb śœarar ("to rule, be strong, have authority over"), thereby making the name mean "God rules" or "God judges". Other possible meanings include "the prince of God" (from the King James Version) or "El fights/struggles".
As a result of a severe drought in Canaan, Jacob moved to Egypt at the time when his son Joseph was viceroy. Jacob died there 17 years later, and Joseph carried Jacob's remains to the land of Canaan, where he gave them stately burial in the same Cave of Machpelah as were buried Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah and Jacob's wife Leah (Genesis 49:29-50:14).

This is one of Jacob’s older teachings, how do we discern God’s will, Jacob is reading from the book of Acts Chapter 16:6-7, there is a question every young believer will ask, there never has been a young believer that hasn’t asked this question, older believers at some point will be asked this question, by younger believers and they should know how to answer it, the question is how do you discern, how do you know, God’s leading in a situation.
(It’s easy for God to show us his will, but it’s another thing for us to do it,)
So how do we discern God’s will, there are a number of indicators discerning the will of the Lord. (It is the exegetical doctrine of Scripture.)

6 They passed through the [c]Phrygian and Galatian region, having been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in [d]Asia; 7 and after they came to Mysia, they were trying to go into Bithynia, and the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them;
Some of you may not be familiar with Moriel Ministries, so I will take a few minutes to explain one of the things that we do. We try to help Christians to understand the Bible in its original context of the first century Church, which was established by the Lord through Jewish Christians. We try to read the Bible the same way the early Jewish church would have read it. There have been others who have tried to do that through the centuries, with varying degrees of success most notably the Plymouth Brethren. We believe it to be important in the Last Days to understand how to interpret the Bible in the way the first century Church did.
