El Cid (1961) is a historical epic film, a romanticized story of the life of the Christian Castilian knight Don Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, called "El Cid" who in the 11th century fought the North African Almoravides and ultimately contributed to the unification of Spain.
Made by Samuel Bronston Productions in association with Dear Film Production and released in the United States by Allied Artists, the film was directed by Anthony Mann and produced by Samuel Bronston with Jaime Prades and Michal Waszynski as associate producers. The screenplay was by Philip Yordan, Ben Barzman and Fredric M. Frank from a story by Frank. The music score was by Miklós Rózsa, the cinematography by Robert Krasker and the editing by Robert Lawrence.

El Cid Campeador (Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, llamado El Cid Campeador; Vivar, actual España, h. 1043 - Valencia, 1099) Caballero castellano. Hijo de Diego Laínez, descendiente del semilegendario Laín Calvo, quedó huerfano a tierna edad y fue educado junto al infante Sancho, hijo del rey Fernando I de Castilla y León, quien, al acceder al trono castellano, lo nombró alférez real (1065). (Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, llamado El Cid Campeador; Vivar, actual España, h. 1043 - Valencia, 1099) Caballero castellano. Hijo de Diego Laínez, descendiente del semilegendario Laín Calvo, quedó huerfano a tierna edad y fue educado junto al infante Sancho, hijo del rey Fernando I de Castilla y León, quien, al acceder al trono castellano, lo nombró alférez real (1065). Hacia 1066, el prestigio de Rodrigo Díaz se vio notablemente incrementado a raíz de su victoria en el combate singular que mantuvo con el caballero navarro Jimeno Garcés, para dirimir el dominio de unos castillos fronterizos que se disputaban los monarcas de Castilla y Navarra; el triunfo le valió el sobrenombre de Campeador.
Como jefe de las tropas reales, Rodrigo participó en la guerra que enfrentó a Sancho II de Castilla con su hermano Alfonso VI de León, quien, derrotado en las batallas de Llantada (1068) y Golpejera (1072), se vio obligado a buscar refugio en la corte musulmana de Toledo. El destino, sin embargo, quiso que Sancho II muriera en 1072, cuando intentaba tomar Zamora, con lo que Alfonso VI se convirtió en soberano de Castilla y León.
El nuevo monarca no sólo no manifestó resentimiento hacia el Campeador, sino que, consciente de la valía de sus servicios, lo honró concediéndole la mano de su sobrina, doña Jimena, con quien casó en julio de 1074. No obstante, unos años después, en 1081, una inoportuna expedición a tierras toledanas sin el premiso real, que puso en grave peligro las negociaciones emprendidas por Alfonso VI para obtener la emblemática ciudad de Toledo, provocó su destierro de Castilla y la confiscación de todas sus posesiones.
Acompañado de su mesnada, el Campeador ofreció sus servicios primero a los condes Ramón Berenguer II y Berenguer Ramón II de Barcelona, pero, al ser rechazado, decidió ayudar a al-Muqtadir, rey de Zaragoza, en la lucha que mantenía con su hermano al-Mundir, rey de Lérida, Tortosa y Denia, quien contaba con el apoyo de los condes de Barcelona y del monarca Sancho I Ramírez de Aragón.
Al servicio de al-Muqtadir, venció en Almenar a Berenguer Ramón II (1082) y cerca de Morella a al-Mundir y el soberano aragonés (1084). Durante este período fue cuando recibió el sobrenombre de Cid, derivado del vocablo árabe sid, que significa señor.
En 1086, la derrota de Alfonso VI frente a los almorávides en Sagrajas propició la reconciliación del monarca con Rodrigo Díaz, quien recibió importantes dominios en Castilla. De acuerdo con el soberano castellanoleonés, el Cid partió hacia Levante, donde, entre 1087 y 1089, hizo tributarios a los monarcas musulmanes de las taifas de Albarracín y de Alpuente e impidió que la ciudad de Valencia, gobernada por al-Qadir, aliado de los castellanos, cayera en manos de al-Mundir y Berenguer Ramón II. En 1089, sin embargo, una nueva disensión con Alfonso VI provocó su definitivo destierro de Castilla, acusado de traición por el rey. Rodrigo decidió regresar al oriente peninsular, se convirtió en protector de al-Qadir y derrotó una vez más a Berenguer Ramón II en Tévar (1090).
Muerto su protegido, decidió actuar en interés propio, y en julio de 1093 puso sitio a Valencia, aprovechando el conflicto interno entre partidarios y opuestos a librar la ciudad a los almorávides. El 15 de junio de 1094, el Cid entró en Valencia y organizó una taifa cristiana que tuvo una vida efímera tras su muerte, acaecida el 10 de julio de 1099. Doña Jimena, su viuda y sucesora, con la ayuda del conde Ramón Berenguer III de Barcelona, casado con su hija María en 1098, consiguió defender la ciudad hasta el año 1101, en que cayó en poder de los almorávides.
