Patto - the Man
album: Patto (1970)
Patto was a progressive jazz-rock band formed in England in 1970 by vocalist Mike Patto with a lineup taken from Timebox consisting of vocalist Patto, drummer John Halsey, guitarist and vibraphone player Ollie Halsall and bassist Clive Griffiths.
In 1970, Patto was formed by members of Timebox and signed to the newly formed Vertigo label. With Muff Winwood as producer, they recorded their first album live in the studio in an attempt to capture the raw virtuosity of Ollie Halsall's guitar playing and Mike Patto's voice. The album "Patto," although not a commercial success, is thought by some to be an important contribution to prog rock .
In December 1971, Patto entered the studio again to record their second album Hold Your Fire after which they were dropped from the Vertigo roster. Despite poor record sales, they were becoming known as an exciting live act. Through his connections in England Muff Winwood was able to have the band signed to Island, and they recorded the album Roll 'em Smoke 'em Put Another Line Out in 1972.
In 1973, the band began to record their fourth album. Mike Patto wrote songs that were less cynical than the usual Patto material and much more commercial. The ensuing album Monkey's Bum was not released. Without Halsall and with each member now involved in other projects Mike Patto chose to disband Patto, going on to form Boxer with Halsall.
In 2009, Patto's song "The Man" was used in trailers for the film, Observe and Report, starring Seth Rogen and Anna Faris and was included along with another track "Sittin' Back Easy" on the film's soundtrack.

Timebox developed from a complicated pedigree that included members of The Bo Street Runners, Patto's People and Chicago Blue Line. This soul psych pop combo, made two singles for Pye's label Piccadilly, before signing to Decca's Deram in 1967. They also recorded five singles for Deram between 1967 and 1969 and appeared on BBC radio shows such as Noise at Nine, Stuart Henry on Sunday and Jimmy Young. Keyboard player Chris Holmes left after their last single release and they began experimenting with progressive rock.
In 1970, Patto was formed by members of Timebox and signed to the newly formed Vertigo label. "The Man" is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.
The phrase "the Man is keeping me down" is commonly used to describe oppression. The phrase "stick it to the Man" encourages resistance to authority, and essentially means "fight back" or "resist", either openly or via sabotage.
The earliest recorded use[citation needed] of the term "the Man" in the American sense dates back to a letter written by a young Alexander Hamilton in September 1772, when he was 15. In a letter to his father James Hamilton, published in the Royal Dutch-American Gazette, he described the response of the Dutch governor of St. Croix to a hurricane that raked that island on August 31, 1772. "Our General has issued several very salutary and humane regulations and both in his publick and private measures, has shewn himself the Man." [dubious – discuss] In the Southern U.S. states, the phrase came to be applied to any man or any group in a position of authority, or to authority in the abstract. From about the 1950s the phrase was also an underworld code word for police, the warden of a prison or other law enforcement or penal authorities.

In 1970, Patto was formed by members of Timebox and signed to the newly formed Vertigo label. With Muff Winwood as producer, they recorded their first album live in the studio in an attempt to capture the raw virtuosity of Ollie Halsall's guitar playing and Mike Patto's voice. The album "Patto," although not a commercial success, is thought by some to be an important contribution to prog rock .
In December 1971, Patto entered the studio again to record their second album Hold Your Fire after which they were dropped from the Vertigo roster. Despite poor record sales, they were becoming known as an exciting live act. Through his connections in England Muff Winwood was able to have the band signed to Island, and they recorded the album Roll 'em Smoke 'em Put Another Line Out in 1972.
In 1973, the band began to record their fourth album. Mike Patto wrote songs that were less cynical than the usual Patto material and much more commercial. The ensuing album Monkey's Bum was not released. Without Halsall and with each member now involved in other projects Mike Patto chose to disband Patto, going on to form Boxer with Halsall.
In 2009, Patto's song "The Man" was used in trailers for the film, Observe and Report, starring Seth Rogen and Anna Faris and was included along with another track "Sittin' Back Easy" on the film's soundtrack.

Guida per il gioco Dark Souls. Diciassettesima parte della soluzione di Dark Souls. All'inizio del video vedremo che Anastasia di Astora è stata uccisa dal Cavaliere Lautrec. Raccoglieremo l'occhio nel per poter andare a prendere la sua anima. Inoltre un nuovo personaggio è apparso al circolo del fuoco: Frampt. In questo video mostrerò come creare un'arma divina, per poter uccidere gli scheletri delle catacombe. Island, however, was not interested in releasing an album without a band to tour and promote it.
John stated in a 1992 interview in the Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine that it was only Patto album he wasn't happy with. The band had lost the fun. "I liked some of it, but we were trying to write songs - Patto thought he was Randy Newman."

"Monkey's Bum" still has never been officially released, which is a shame because there are some great songs on the album. Indeed, the music is simpler, hinting at the type of music that Mike and Ollie would play in Boxer a couple years later -- not a lot of time signature changes or jazzy chord progressions. The band plays well, of course, and there are some brilliant guitar moments from Ollie, proving that he was there creatively for at least some of the the sessions. Mike plays a lot more electric piano on this album.
An unofficial copy is relatively easy to pick up on CD from the Audio Archives label. Surprisingly, they've even been seen on the racks in certain major music stores in London. There has been talk for years of Muff Winwood putting together an official release. Maybe there is some legality of ownership issue holding things up (anybody know the scoop?). Hopefully it will happen eventually.

In April 2002, Akarma (a division of Comet Records) released a 180 gram vinyl edition of "Monkey's Bum" (Catalog # AK 201).
Apparently an unauthorized release, the source used for this release is the Audio Archives bootleg CD (or the same source used to make the CD). So, nothing is new here apart from the the artwork and the vinyl format.
It sounds like some attempts were made to improve the sound quality, but there really wasn't much they could do starting with such a horrible source. Regrettably, the sound quality of this release is also poor.
The cover has completely different artwork - no source is cited on the jacket. The back cover features concert photos from the Hollywood Bowl in 1972 -- taken directly from this site's "1972 USA Concert Photos" page (without any involvement on behalf of the Patto Fan Site, of course).
