Firstly, with news that the Serious Fraud Office is now investigating Blue Chip Investments. The SFO has set up a free call number for investors to ring with details.
19 companies associated with the Blue Chip property investment and management franchise system are in liquidation.
Meanwhile, the group's founder Mark Bryers gave his first interview since the collapse on television last night. In it, he pledged to offer compensation to investors of up to NZ$25 million and he acknowledged that the Blue Chip brand is "dead". You don't say. He also complained that Blue Chip's problems had been exaggerated and that many investors were still sitting on capital gains.
Meanwhile, more news overnight that Australia's Allco Finance Group is scrambling to rearrange its capital and debt structure ahead of a deadline next Friday to post its interim results. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the directors are refusing to sign off the accounts and that Commonwealth Bank and a syndicate of banks are desperately trying to avoid Allco going into administration. They are owed $1.1 billion. Allco controls New Zealand's Strategic Finance, although Strategic has said it does not rely on Allco for any funding.
And finally more news of trouble in America's economy, where a key survey of manufacturing activity on the East coast was much worse than expected. The so-called Philly Fed survey showed the sector contracting. Wall St fell on the news.

With news from Australia that ANZ Banking group has revealed a US$200 million exposure to a bond insurance deal that has gone sour. This is all about the so-called monoline bond insurance crisis I've been briefing you on for weeks. Now its finally hit investors closer to home.
ANZ Banking Group owns both ANZ and National Bank in New Zealand and, like the other banks, had been thought to have been immune from the direct fallout from the global credit crunch.
The news shocked investors, who immediately wiped off 6% from the value of ANZ.
Elsewhere in credit crunch news, the Wall St Journal is reporting that Ambac, the second biggest monoline bond insurer, is planning to break itself up into a safe insurer of local government bonds and a not-so-safe insurer of complicated credit derivatives. This is more bad news for the global banking industry because it means banks still holding the complicated credit derivatives, such as ANZ, will have to downgrade their value as soon as the 'less safe' part of Ambac is given a bad credit rating.
And finally, the General Electric, which owns GE Money and Wizard here, is reported to be in negotiations to buy some assets of Australia's Allco Finance Group. You might remember that Allco owns a controlling stake in Strategic Finance, although Strategic has said it has had no indication it is for sale or would be sold.

With a roundup today I'm calling the morning margin call.
Because that's been the theme overnight where the banks have made margin calls on some big lenders that is likely to force them into administration or bankruptcy.
Firstly news from late yesterday that National Australia Bank called the loans it had made to the owners of Allco Financial Group. These so-called Allco Principals had borrowed 110 million dollars against shares they held in Allco itself. Now after Allco's share price collapsed National Australia Bank, which owns the BNZ, has repossessed those shares and also some in Allco HIT, the fund that owns strategic finance. NAB and the Bank of Scotland have also appointed an administrator to Allco Principals.
You'd have to say that the Allco group's days look numbered. Other Australian banks, including Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which owns ASB, have billions of dollars in debts outstanding in Allco. They are not big enough to threaten the banks, but it will have a chilling effect on the lending appetites at these big banks.
Overnight, a big US mortgage bank called Thornberg after its margin calls from its bankers forced it close to bankruptcy. Its shares collapsed. And the Carlyle Group, the world's second biggest private equity fund, is having big problems with its mortgage bond fund. It failed to pay margin calls last night for $37 million of loans. It has bought $22 billion of AAA mortgage bonds.
This sub-prime crisis gets uglier and spreads wider by the day.

Allco Financial Group was a fully integrated global financial services business, listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and head-quartered in Sydney, Australia. Major services provided are structured asset finance, funds management and debt and equity funding. Allco has over A$4.3 billion in assets, and has financed over A$60 billion of transactions. In its most visible public transaction Allco was a part of Airline Partners Australia, the consortium that unsuccessfully attempted to buy Qantas. The company is now in liquidation, after previously being in administrative receivership, following difficulties in refinancing debt and a share price fall of 99% since the beginning of the subprime mortgage crisis.
Allco Financial Group was founded in 1979 by David Coe, a former partner of Sydney law firm Mallesons Stephens Jaques to originate and arrange structured finance transactions for aircraft, ships and rolling stock . Over the years, Allco has grown to provide funding for other services, including infrastructure and commercial finance. Allco now operates globally and employs over 500 people.

David L. Ramsey III (born September 3, 1960) is an American financial author, radio host, television personality, and motivational speaker. His show and speeches strongly focus on discouraging the use of debt.
Ramsey's syndicated radio program The Dave Ramsey Show is promoted with a tagline that "It's about your life and your money," and it is heard on more than 500 radio stations throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in podcast format and on XM and Sirius satellite radio. He has written numerous books. His books and broadcasts often feature a Christian perspective that reflects Ramsey's religious beliefs. Meanwhile, the group's founder Mark Bryers gave his first interview since the collapse on television last night. In it, he pledged to offer compensation to investors of up to NZ$25 million and he acknowledged that the Blue Chip brand is "dead". You don't say. He also complained that Blue Chip's problems had been exaggerated and that many investors were still sitting on capital gains.
Meanwhile, more news overnight that Australia's Allco Finance Group is scrambling to rearrange its capital and debt structure ahead of a deadline next Friday to post its interim results. The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting that the directors are refusing to sign off the accounts and that Commonwealth Bank and a syndicate of banks are desperately trying to avoid Allco going into administration. They are owed $1.1 billion. Allco controls New Zealand's Strategic Finance, although Strategic has said it does not rely on Allco for any funding.
And finally more news of trouble in America's economy, where a key survey of manufacturing activity on the East coast was much worse than expected. The so-called Philly Fed survey showed the sector contracting. Wall St fell on the news.

With news from Australia that ANZ Banking group has revealed a US$200 million exposure to a bond insurance deal that has gone sour. This is all about the so-called monoline bond insurance crisis I've been briefing you on for weeks. Now its finally hit investors closer to home.
ANZ Banking Group owns both ANZ and National Bank in New Zealand and, like the other banks, had been thought to have been immune from the direct fallout from the global credit crunch.
The news shocked investors, who immediately wiped off 6% from the value of ANZ.
Elsewhere in credit crunch news, the Wall St Journal is reporting that Ambac, the second biggest monoline bond insurer, is planning to break itself up into a safe insurer of local government bonds and a not-so-safe insurer of complicated credit derivatives. This is more bad news for the global banking industry because it means banks still holding the complicated credit derivatives, such as ANZ, will have to downgrade their value as soon as the 'less safe' part of Ambac is given a bad credit rating.
And finally, the General Electric, which owns GE Money and Wizard here, is reported to be in negotiations to buy some assets of Australia's Allco Finance Group. You might remember that Allco owns a controlling stake in Strategic Finance, although Strategic has said it has had no indication it is for sale or would be sold.

Because that's been the theme overnight where the banks have made margin calls on some big lenders that is likely to force them into administration or bankruptcy.
Firstly news from late yesterday that National Australia Bank called the loans it had made to the owners of Allco Financial Group. These so-called Allco Principals had borrowed 110 million dollars against shares they held in Allco itself. Now after Allco's share price collapsed National Australia Bank, which owns the BNZ, has repossessed those shares and also some in Allco HIT, the fund that owns strategic finance. NAB and the Bank of Scotland have also appointed an administrator to Allco Principals.
You'd have to say that the Allco group's days look numbered. Other Australian banks, including Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which owns ASB, have billions of dollars in debts outstanding in Allco. They are not big enough to threaten the banks, but it will have a chilling effect on the lending appetites at these big banks.
Overnight, a big US mortgage bank called Thornberg after its margin calls from its bankers forced it close to bankruptcy. Its shares collapsed. And the Carlyle Group, the world's second biggest private equity fund, is having big problems with its mortgage bond fund. It failed to pay margin calls last night for $37 million of loans. It has bought $22 billion of AAA mortgage bonds.
This sub-prime crisis gets uglier and spreads wider by the day.

At the time of its demise, Strategic Finance was owned by an Australian fund called Allco HIT - part of the Allco Finance Group, which collapsed under a heap of debt shortly after Strategic. Allco held Strategic through a couple of intermediate companies, with Strategic's immediate New Zealand parent company being Strategic Investment Group, which Chalkie will call SIG....
