Phra Bat Somdet Phra Poramenthra Maha Mongkut Phra Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua (Thai: พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหามงกุฎ พระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว), or Rama IV, known in English-speaking countries as King Mongkut (18 October 1804 – 1 October 1868), was the fourth monarch of Siam (Thailand) under the House of Chakri, ruling from 1851 to 1868.
Outside of Thailand, he is best known as the King in the 1951 musical and 1956 film The King and I, based on the 1946 film Anna and the King of Siam – in turn based on a 1944 novel by an American missionary about Anna Leonowens' years at his court, from 1862 to 1867.
During his reign, the pressure of Western expansionism was felt for the first time in Siam. Mongkut embraced Western innovations and initiated the modernization of his country, both in technology and culture—earning him the nickname "The Father of Science and Technology" in Siam.
Mongkut was also known for his appointing his brother, Prince Chutamani, as Second King, crowned in 1851 as King Pinklao. Mongkut himself assured the country that Pinklao should be respected with equal honor to himself (as King Naresuan had done with his brother Ekathotsarot in 1583). Mongkut's reign was also the time when the power of the House of Bunnag reached its zenith and became the most powerful noble family of Siam.

The King and I is a musical, the fifth by the team of composer Richard Rodgers and dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II. It is based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, which is in turn derived from the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, governess to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s. The musical's plot relates the experiences of Anna, a British schoolteacher hired as part of the King's drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the King and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the piece, as well as by a love that neither can admit. The musical premiered on March 29, 1951, at Broadway's St. James Theatre. It ran nearly three years, then the fourth longest-running Broadway musical in history, and has had many tours and revivals.
In 1950, theatrical attorney Fanny Holtzmann was looking for a part for her client, veteran leading lady Gertrude Lawrence. Holtzmann realized that Landon's book would provide an ideal vehicle and contacted Rodgers and Hammerstein, who were initially reluctant but agreed to write the musical. The pair initially sought Rex Harrison to play the supporting part of the King, a role that he had played in the 1946 film made from Landon's book, but he was unavailable. They settled on the young actor and television director Yul Brynner.
Anna and the King is a 1999 biographical drama film loosely based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam (and its 1946 film adaptation), which give a fictionalised account of the diaries of Anna Leonowens. The story concerns Anna, an English schoolteacher in Siam, now Thailand, in the late 19th century, who becomes the teacher of King Mongkut's many children and wives.
The film was directed by Andy Tennant and stars Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-fat. It was mostly shot in Malaysia, particularly in the Penang, Ipoh and Langkawi region. It was an Academy Award nominee in 1999 for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.
Anna Leonowens (Jodie Foster) is a British widow who has come to Siam with her son Louis (Tom Felton) to teach English to the dozens of children of King Mongkut (Chow Yun-fat). She is a strong-willed, intelligent woman, and this pleases the King, who wants to modernize his country to keep it safe from the threat of colonialism, while protecting many of the ancient traditions that give Siam its unique identity. The King and Anna discuss the differences between Eastern and Western love, and the King dismisses the notion that a man can be happy with only one wife. In order to win the favors of Britain, the King orders a sumptuous reception and delegates Anna to organize it. During the reception, the King verbally spars graciously and wittily with Sir Mycroft Kincaid (Bill Stewart), of the East India Company, who accuses Siam of being a superstitious nation. At the end of the reception, the King dances with Anna.

He came to the throne in 1851. Most known in the west for his part in "The King and I" it was King Mongkut who led Siam through a difficult period when neighboring countries on all sides were coming under British or French rule. He began to modernize Siam and was adept at keeping foreign nations at a distance, securing Siamese independence. A forward thinking and highly intelligent monarch his reign was the foundation for great advances to come in the future and he is rightly revered by many in Thailand to this day. He died in 1868 and was succeeded by his son Prince Chulalongkorn.
In 2003, a French manuscript is discovered in Paris, recording the events of the reign (1851-68) of King Mongkut of Siam (now Thailand). Manichan ("Moonstone"), a young female historian working at the Thai consulate in Paris, is then called to take part in an international conference concerning the discovery. But the manuscript happens to be of some power that brings Manichan back and forth between her time and the time of King Mongkut. At the time of King Mongkut, Britain and France are seeking to colonise Siam after having occupied all its neighbouring countries, including Burma, Cambodia, Lao, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc. Manichan therefore witnesses some of the most significant events in the history of her homeland, to which her 21st century knowledge might be of use. Later on, Manichan f...
Queen Victoria of England sends an envoy to the court of King Mongkut of Siam (now Thailand) for the purpose of adopting a treaty that will be known as the "Bowring Treaty". This treaty is prejudicial to Siam. To make sure that Siam will not refuse, the British envoys comes with a warship, implying a direct threat of warfare. At that time, all the neighbouring countries of Siam have also been occupied by Britain and France. So, Manichan ("Moonstone"), a 21st century Thai girl who travels back to the time of King Mongkut, might be able to help her homeland with her "knowledge from the future". This clip is from the 2004 political, historical, and romance film called "The Siam Renaissance" (ทวิภพ), starring French-Thai model Florence Faivre as Manichan. The end of the 1956 movie version of Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I". King Mongkut is dying, and his son Chulalongkorn abolishes prostration, saying it is a barbaric practice. The movie is banned in Thailand which is a great pity as it raises many themes highly relevant now that the current king, Bhumibol Adulyadej, is dying.
King Mongkut of Siam (played by Yul Brynner) sings about the perplexity of knowing what to believe, in this clip from the 1956 movie "The King and I". It's a pity the movie is banned in Thailand, since as this song shows, it raises some very apposite themes.
