Jacques Romain Georges Brel (French: [ʒak bʁɛl]; 8 April 1929 – 9 October 1978) was a Belgian singer, songwriter and actor who composed and performed literate, thoughtful, and theatrical songs that generated a large, devoted following—initially in Belgium and France, later throughout the world. He was widely considered a master of the modern chanson. Although he recorded most of his songs in French and occasionally in Dutch, he became a major influence on English-speaking songwriters and performers such as David Bowie, Alex Harvey, Leonard Cohen, Marc Almond and Rod McKuen. English translations of his songs were recorded by many top performers in the United States, including Ray Charles, Judy Collins, John Denver, the Kingston Trio, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Scott Walker, and Andy Williams.
In French-speaking countries, Brel was also a successful actor, appearing in ten films. He also directed two films, one of which, Le Far West, was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973. Having sold over 25 million records worldwide, Brel is the fourth best-selling Belgian recording artist of all time. Brel married Thérèse "Miche" Michielsen in 1950 and the couple had three children. He also had a romantic relationship with actress and dancer Maddly Bamy from 1972 until his death in 1978.
Brel may refer to:
"Ne me quitte pas" (English: "Don't leave me") is a 1959 French song by the Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel. It has been covered in the original French by many artists and has also been translated into and performed in many other languages. A well-known adaptation, with English lyrics by Rod McKuen, is "If You Go Away".
"Ne me quitte pas" is considered by some as "Brel's ultimate classic". It was written after Brel's mistress "Zizou" (Suzanne Gabriello) threw him out of her life. Zizou was pregnant with Brel's child, but Brel refused to acknowledge the child as his own. Zizou later had an abortion due to Brel's actions. Brel first recorded the song on 11 September 1959, and it was released on his fourth album La Valse à Mille Temps. It was published by Warner-Chappell Publishing. In 1961 a Dutch-language version sung by Brel was released on the Philips label; entitled "Laat me niet alleen", with lyrics by Ernst van Altena, it was a B-side to Marieke (also a Dutch-language version). Brel recorded "Ne me quitte pas" again as the title track of his 1972 album.
Jacques (French: [ʒak], Quebec French pronunciation : [ʒɑɔ̯k]) is the French equivalent of James, ultimately originating from the name Jacob.
Jacques is derived from the Late Latin Iacobus, from the Greek Ἰακώβος (Septuagintal Greek Ἰακώβ), from the Hebrew name Jacob יַעֲקֹב. (See Jacob.) James is derived from Iacomus, a variant of Iacobus.
As a first name, Jacques is often phonetically converted to English as Jacob, Jake (from Jacob), or Jack, but the last is not an accurate translation. (Jack, from Jankin, is strictly a diminutive of John.)
A clarification - back when I was doing the subs, I got the meaning of the word "Batave" wrong - as it appears, it rather means "Netherlandian woman" and has a sexual connotation (see also http://www.proz.com/kudoz/French/linguistics/3620419-ils_ram%C3%A8nent_leur_batave.html) Thanks for the kind people who pointed it out in the comments.

Jacques Brels last concert in the Netherlands was recorded on may 30th in a restaurant 'Het Huis Met de Witte Pilaren' in Bergen. These recordings were lost in the archives but in 2002 rediscovered. Jacques Brel wasn't pleased to perform in a restaurant while the audience was dining. However, in his performance he showed himself a true professional. After the concert he showed his anger by throwing down his fee and yelled that the VPRO could keep the money or donate it to the Red Cross. He also received a whole cheese and left in great anger and rage. After his friend and companion Ernst van Altena said 'Alors Jacques, bon fromage' (instead of bon voyage') Jacques Brel calmed down. Jacques Brel retired two years later. More music on: http://www.vpro.nl/vrije-geluiden. This video was r...

Full interview of Jacques Brel in Knokke, 1971. This video already exists but as a Belgian, as a fan of Jacques Brel and as globetrotter, I wanted to add myself subtitles in English for everyone to enjoy it. My English being what it is, I hope I didn't make any mistake and transcribed well enough Brel's words. In October 2016, I shall publish an article about him and the Marquesas Islands, both in French and English, on my travel blog: http://www.travellingmogwai.com. The sound of sea at the begin and at the end belong to Open Seas - Sounds of the Earth. All the songs are by Jacques Brel.

Jacques rencontre Gabriel. Ils s'y amusent bien.

The St. Louisa school girl
Corona on her breath
Push up ammunition
Smoke some crystal meth
All she wants to do is rock the big dance floor
Sugar Fairy Princess never been before
Bald headed bouncers counting 1-2-3
She just walked right in and showed her fake I.D. and said…
Sucker, I’m only seventeen
she said…
Sucker, I’m only seventeen
The ruler infiltration
Over enemy lines
On the name of freedom
Win a real good time
4am confession in the bathroom stall
She’s under surveillance and a disco ball
She’s dancing on the speakers, call security
And she just shakes her ass and shows her fake I.D. and says…
Sucker, I’m only seventeen (yeah)
she said…
Sucker, I’m only seventeen
Well she’s a James Bond, side dong? operation Hong Kong
Her daddy’s sleepin now they’ve got the systems gone wrong
Sucker
Well all she wants to do is rock the big dance floor
All she wants to do is rock the big dance floor
All she wants to…
All she wants to…
All she wants to do is rock the big dance floor
