The Pennefather River is a river located on the western Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland, Australia.
Formed by the confluence of a series of waterways including the Fish Creek in the Port Musgrave Aggregation estuarine wetlands, the Pennefather River flows due west, joined by the Turtle Creek from the north and Dingo Creek from the south, before emptying into the Gulf of Carpentaria south of Mapoon. The river descends 1 metre (3 ft 3 in) over its 11-kilometre (6.8 mi) course. At its widest point, the river is approximately 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) wide. The river has a catchment area of 3,009 square kilometres (1,162 sq mi), of which 349 square kilometres (135 sq mi) comprises wetlands.
The river mouth was the site of the first recorded landfall in Australia by a European explorer, by Willem Janszoon in 1606. Janszoon named it R. met het Bosch ("River with the Bush").
In 1802 Matthew Flinders mistook the river for the Coen River named by Jan Carstensz in 1623 (now the Archer River), so that the Bosch / Pennefather River was named Coen River on maps in the 19th century. In 1880, Captain Charles Edward de Fonblanque Pennefather established that there were now two Coen Rivers, and in 1894 Queensland authorities named the river after him, although the British Admiralty Chart for the Gulf of Carpentaria kept the name Coen River until 1967.

Highlights from our camping adventure to Pennefather River, located north of Weipa. It is one of the most naturally beautiful locations I've had the pleasure to camp at and the fishing is wild with pelagic fish and big sharks. I can't wait to return!
Camped south of the Pennefather River, Cape York
Watch in HD and turn the sound up as in this episode we make our way to the remote fishing /camping oasis known as The Pennefather River. Barramundi and mangrove jack are on the menu as well as very very soft maxtraxx swallowing sand. Just when it was all too much fun we head for the Old Telegraph Track. Arrival and departure angles are pushed to the limit as well as trucks and trailers. 25 odd creek crossings in total gets us to Elliot and twin bat falls where I bake a cake for the birthday boy.
Live mullet taken by a great fish and suspect then taken by a shark. Fought like crazy for over thirty minutes only to be snapped off a few metres from shore.
4x speed, flying out of Pennefather River camp area!

Phillip and I busting up some Barra in the Pennefather river on lures. This was first attempt at barra fishing, we landed 7 between us and 1 mangrove jack, we dropped another 5 near the boat.
In this long boring video i filmed my custom off-road boat trailer suspension going through a sand track up at the Pennefather River just north of Weipa in Cape York FNQ. I am extremely content with its performance although i might try removing one leaf from the spring pack just so it has a little more travel and it hits the bump stops on heavy bumps/dips.
Here's a peak at road conditions on Cape York (July 2009) travelling from Bamaga to Archer River Road House not far from Archer River. You also get a sense of how well the 200 Series Land Cruiser performs with an ARB / OME suspension upgrade and Mickey Thompson BAJA ATZ 4 Rib tyres. Quiet and smooth. Also shows the quality image stabilisation on the Canon HV20 Camera

The Archer River Roadhouse and Caravan Park is a real oasis on the far northern development road, 200kms South of Weipa!
OK so here's Part 2 of Day 4, where we see Musgrave, Coen and arrive at the Archer River Roadhouse to spend the night. More of that in tomorrow's video (Day 5) Please 'Watch in HD' if you can
