Lannan Programs

Lannan supports individuals, organizations, and public events addressing one or more of these genres: Art, Cultural Freedom, Indigenous Communities, Literary, and Residency. You are invited to explore the breadth and depth of these activities. Here is a brief description of each program area:

Lannan Art Program

Lannan Cultural Freedom Program

photo of arundhati royIn 1999 Lannan Foundation established the Lannan Prize for Cultural Freedom. The Foundation awarded the first Cultural Freedom Fellowship in 2003 to encourage and support leaders in American and foreign communities to contemplate, reflect, write, and study.

Lannan Indigenous Communities Program

Student in Browning, Montana via the Piegan InstituteThe Indigenous Communities Program (ICP) supports the resolve of Native Americans to renew their communities through their own institutions and traditions. Funding priority is given to rural indigenous projects that are consistent with traditional values in the areas of education, Native cultures, the revival and preservation of languages, legal rights, and environmental protection.

Lannan Literary Program

book published by archipelago booksLannan Foundation established its Literary Program in 1987 to support the creation of exceptional poetry and prose written originally in the English language, and to increase the audience for contemporary literature. Since 2001, we have also offered grant support for the publication and dissemination of works translated into English.

Lannan Residency Program

photo of the Lannan residency house in Marfa, TXThe Lannan Residency Fellowship provides uninterrupted writing time for poets, writers, essayists, translators, scholars, curators, as well as indigenous, environmental and social justice activists. Residency durations are usually from four to six weeks.
