He was a self taught musician and a prolific composer, active in the 1920s and 1930s. He worked as a cinema pianist. Unfortunately, most of his music is lost or forgotten, but he would certainly deserve a revival. The score for this piece was provided by the kindness of Watson's grand-daughter, Claire Waiting. Belfry Memories is subtitled A Bell Waltz. This is the second bell waltz by Watson that I have uploaded. Things fall apart, but they are also reassembled and given new life, in an enlightened form. Meet the New York based artist and filmmaker Bill Morrison in this interview about his haunting experimental collage films 'Decasia' and 'Light is Calling'. Bill Morrison works with archival footage in various stages of degradation, cutting the footage to original music made by different composers. The music isn't background music, but works "in tandem with the images", Morrison explains. Morrison works with layers of reality -- archaeological layers of time -- looking for moments of exquisite decay happening to the film on a chemical level. In 'Light is Calling' (2004): "you're seeing this narrative that was shot in 1926, you're seeing all the different things that have happened to the film since then, and how they relate to each other." Based on a scene from a deteriorating print of James Young's film 'The Bells' (1926) which was optically printed and re-edited to a composition by composer Michael Gordon, 'Light is Calling' is a meditation on the nature of random collisions. "There are two different ways of looking at decay, you can look at decay as just part of a cycle, instrumental in reforming your life, and you can also think of decay as the end, and something to be feared and avoided at all costs. Both attitudes are embraced in the film," Morrison explains. In his research Morrison is looking for "shadows of moments" to be frozen in time. You are looking at things which have survived in a enlightened form, he says. 'Decaysia' (2002) is a collection of old shots on nitrate based film in various forms of distress cut to music composed by Michael Gordon. The found footage shows people in various stages of ecstasy, transcending their bodies. The bodies are rotting, but the spirit transcends, and lives on, Morrison explains. When people were filmed they had no idea about the context of the film. The footage has taken on it's own life. Morrison adds that it's also a conversation with digital media -- because nobody knows how long digital footage would have survived. The old analogue film footage has persevered into a new form, and the spirit is still intact. The award winning American artist Bill Morrison (b. 1965) is best known for his experimental collage film Decasia. Morrison's films have been screened at festivals, museums and concert halls worldwide, including the Sundance Film Festival and The Tate Modern, London. Eight of his titles have been acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. His work with Ridge Theater has been recognized with two Bessie awards and an Obie Award. Decasia, his feature-length collaboration with composer Michael Gordon, was noted by J. Hoberman of the Village Voice as "the most widely acclaimed American avant-garde film of the fin-de-siècle." The director Errol Morris commented while viewing 'Decasia' that "This may be the greatest movie ever made". South Devon's finest 8-bell tower... John Taylor's 1926 work at their very best. January 2015: Devon Call-Change Bellringers celebrating William Carew and Ryan Trout's birthdays. Footage shows rising these fantastic 8-bells in peal, the second-half of the "Queens" peal and concludes with lowering the bells in peal. For anyone that is interested in the history of Devon Call-Change competition ringing, Wolborough ringers where one of the pioneering teams of the early Devon Association of Ringers. They had an outstanding 8-bell team and won the Devon 8-Bell title six times between the years of 1931 to 1948. This feat is even more remarkable when you consider the distance they travelled throughout Devon to compete. Wolborough ringers won the "Ross Shield" in 1931 at Ashburton, 1932 at North Tawton, 1933 at Chittlehampton, 1936 at Bovey Tracey, 1946 at High Bickington and 1948 at Chudleigh. Broadway Bell Hops (Sam Lanin's band) -- Don't Take That Black Bottom Away (Coslow, Britt & Link) Fox Trot, Harmony 1926 (USA) NOTE: Broadway Bell Hops was one from myriad of the pseydonyms used by American bandleader Sam Lanin -- and this one was designed especially for Lanin 's recording contract with Harmony. Harmony Records was a low price label owned by Columbia Records . In the earlier period, Harmony records were acoustically recorded even though electrical recording had taken over in the record industry. It has been stated that Columbia had redesigned its acoustic recording process just before electrical recording took over, and so the Harmony sound was better than most acoustic recordings. Sam Lanin was one of three brothers (two others Howard and Lester, were also bandleaders) born to Russian Jewish immigrants who emigrated to Philadelphia in the decade of the 1900s. Sam played clarinet and violin while young, and in 1912 he was offered a spot playing in Victor Herbert's orchestra, where he played through World War I. After the war he moved to New York City and began playing at the Roseland Ballroom in late 1918. There he established the Roseland Orchestra; this ensemble recorded for the Columbia Gramophone Company in the early 1920s. Thru 1920s/early 1930s Sam Lanin's band was one of the most recorded popular dance ensambles. His recordings can be found under dozens of pseudomnyms on various mainstream or ephemeric labels in USA.

Buddhist Altar Bell Set - Authentic Japan Buddhism Rin

Description Vintage solid brass Japanese Buddhist altar bell with brand new bell cushion (zabuton) and wooden cushion stand with lacquered finish. The set also includes a brand new wooden bell striker (bai). Bells such as this are called 'rin' in Japanese and are used as implements of prayer and worship within Japanese temples as well as with home altars called butsudan (please read below to learn more about butsudan). The rin offered with this listing is in good condition and rings with a lovely tone and resonance. The bell wears a darkened patina suggestive of its age and past use. This bell dates from the mid to late Japanese Showa period (1926-1989). The bell cushion, stand and striker which are included with this set are new, and were specially selected by the owner of our local Buddhist altar goods store (this type of shop is called Butsuguya in Japanese) as appropriate for use with this size bell. The cushion includes a textured fabric cover and braided thread tassel. Proper use of a cushion and striker improves not only the appearance of a bell, but also enhances the quality of the sound it will produce, and for this reason it is very important that the proper cushion and striker are selected. Altar bells and accessories are one example where this old system of measure is still used, and brand new religious items will commonly include labels stating the item's size in kanejaku units. The basic unit of measure within this system is the "sun" which equals roughly 3 centimeters. More about Japanese Buddhist home altars At the start of the long Japanese Edo period (1600-1868) the Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu determined that the country of Nippon (Japan) should be closed to the outside world with the exception of a few ports of trade. This was done in an effort to protect Japan from the colonizing forces of the west and in particular to isolate the Japanese people from the influences of Christianity, which the Shogun viewed as a threat to the principals of Confucianism upon which his rule did depend. Over time this fear of Christianity grew such that laws were eventually passed requiring the Japanese to annually swear devotion to Buddhism. Fearing the threat and penalties of Christian belief, many Japanese families began to erect small Buddhist altars within their home as further proof of their loyalty to Buddhism. These home altars or butsudan as they are called were commonly outfitted with religious implements such as bells, incense burners, candlesticks and statues such that they might resemble Buddhist temples in miniature. Specialist crafts developed for the sole purpose of manufacturing beautiful wooden butsudan and their associated articles of worship. Over time, the practice of maintaining a home altar lost it's original purpose of publicly expressing one's loyalty to Buddhism and instead became an accepted and important household function, particularly with families acting as the head of the household name (usually the home of the first born son). Gregorio Magno Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jesús López-Cobos Description by Roy Brewer [-] Subtitled "Four Impressions," this work evokes in resplendent orchestration and with great dramatic power various religious events depicted in the stained glass windows of Italian churches. "The Flight into Egypt" depicts the caravan containing the Christ child; "St. Michael Archangel" is shown driving rebellious angels out of heaven with a flaming sword; "The Matin of St. Claire" is inspired by the legend of a thirteenth century saint transported miraculously to a little Italian church to take part in the Matin service; "St. Gregory the Great" portrays Pope Gregory (590-604) blessing the congregation at a ceremonial service. These are no mere guidebook illustrations, and the work cannot in any strict sense be called program music. In fact the music was originally adapted from a three-part piano suite called Preludes on Gregorian Themes, written with no pictorial intent whatever. They were named by Respighi's wife and friends at a dinner when they heard him play the pieces for the first time and made up titles for them. After the church windows idea took hold, Respighi orchestrated them and added a fourth movement. But of course orchestration is everything with Respighi, and the score has the feeling of transparency and subtle coloration appropriate to its title. It becomes as evocative as The Fountains of Rome and The Pines of Rome. "The Flight to Egypt" has a reverent, modal feeling, and St. Michael sets on the naughty angels with exemplary vigor. "The Matin of St. Claire" is, perhaps, the most evocative of the set -- a tender pastorale with finely touched-in woodwind tints. In "St. Gregory the Great," Respighi unleashes his full orchestral forces, including an organ, to convey the pomp and grandeur of the papal setting. The splendor is almost visible. Bells of various pitches sound through the orchestra, and the wide difference in compass between lowest pedal notes of the organ and the high brasses contribute to the grandest of grand finales. Lyons Township Bell Tower

This recording is part of the Pride in LT's History Project, a preservation movement to document and protect the items of historical importance around Lyons Township High School in La Grange, IL. LT's bell tower was designed by architect Joseph C. Llewellyn and was inspired by towers found in northern Italy. It was part of the important school addition begun in 1926 and completed in 1928, the year in which the bells were installed. Though part of the motor was replaced this spring (2013), the clock still runs on its original mechanisms, ringing every fifteen minutes. There are four bells that ring, the largest inscribed: I call as fly the irrevocable hours Futile as air or strong as fate to make Your lives of sand or granite; awful powers Even as men choose, they either give or take. —Lowell The largest bell weights 1,800 pounds and the smallest 400 pounds. These bells were donated by the M.W. Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of the State of Illinois as part of a community effort to beautiful the new 1928 addition to the school. LT also has the bell for the original school tower, donated in 1889 by Marshall Field. That bell used to be rung by hand after football victories at Emmond Field across the street.
