"Life Below Zero" returned for a new season in its familiar Thursday night timeslot. The familiar faces were there with the exception of Andy and Kate. In this first episode, we could have used a bit of Andy and Kate's bickering to liven things up. It was a bit sleepy.
One thing that sets "Life Below Zero" apart from most of the rest of the Alaska reality TV shows is that there is no sense of community among these people. That is probably because there is no community! Our friends on "Life Below Zero" are scattered around the Arctic Circle. These folks are alone most of the time in truly remote surroundings. This sense of isolation gives the show an eerie feel at times, but there is not a lot of challenge to the show’s authenticity.
The characters on "Life Below Zero" interact frequently with the fans on social media. Sue Aikens and the Hailstone family are fan favorites, but Sue is by far the star of this show. Sue recently did a Facebook Question and Answer as reported here by News.au.
Her home base at Kavik is the real deal, and viewers continue to be amazed at this independent, witty woman and how she maintains this hunting and refueling station on her own. In this first episode, Sue was patrolling for bears along the perimeter of her property.
Sadly, the most exciting thing on thing on the season premiere of "Life Below Zero" was in one of the first scenes shot in Kavik. The highlight of the show was the moment when Sue leaned down and ran her fingers through a clump of bear scat.
