PLEASE READ: In this clip from the 2008 film "The Soviet Story", we see that George Bernard Shaw, the celebrated progressive playwright defended Hitler, advocated killing those who can't justify their existence and called for the development of lethal gas 10 years before the national socialists in Germany did exactly that.
George Bernard Shaw was one of the left's most revered figures and the only person to win both an Oscar and a Nobel prize.
In this clip Snore documents three points that many viewers find disturbing:
1. Shaw was a vocal supporter of Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini
2. Shaw supported mass killing of the unproductive
3. Shaw advocated creating a Zyklon-B type gas to allow more "humane" mass killing
The historical record for these claims is clear, but many posters dispute the second point by stating (without support) that Shaw was being sarcastic. Unfortunately, this is clearly not the case as is obvious from reading Shaw's writings and public comments in the broad context of the time they were written.
When Shaw's controversial statements on eugenics were reported in the media, he did not dispute them or claim that the quotes were taken out of context.
I welcome anyone to challenge the director on these and other points, but please provide specific support for any claims rather than just stating your own wistful thinking on the topic.
Also, to avoid betraying your ignorance on Shaw's views, PLEASE READ at least Section One of the preface to Shaw's play "On the Rocks" which fleshes out the full logic and substance of Shaw's view on "extermination" BEFORE becoming the 1000th person to express your cognitive dissonance with an unsupported claim that "this must be satire" or that it was "taken out of context". In fact the historical context explains exactly why Shaw's logic was appealing at the time.

Chesterton and Shaw were famous friends and enjoyed their arguments and discussions. Although rarely in agreement, they both maintained good-will towards and respect for each other. However, in his writing, Chesterton expressed himself very plainly on where they differed and why. In Heretics he writes of Shaw:
"After belabouring a great many people for a great many years for being unprogressive, Mr. Shaw has discovered, with characteristic sense, that it is very doubtful whether any existing human being with two legs can be progressive at all. Having come to doubt whether humanity can be combined with progress, most people, easily pleased, would have elected to abandon progress and remain with humanity. Mr. Shaw, not being easily pleased, decides to throw over humanity with all its limitations and go in for progress for its own sake. If man, as we know him, is incapable of the philosophy of progress, Mr. Shaw asks, not for a new kind of philosophy, but for a new kind of man. It is rather as if a nurse had tried a rather bitter food for some years on a baby, and on discovering that it was not suitable, should not throw away the food and ask for a new food, but throw the baby out of window, and ask for a new baby."
Shaw represented the new school of thought, humanism, which was rising at the time. Chesterton's views, on the other hand, became increasingly more focused towards the church. In Orthodoxy he writes:
"The worship of will is the negation of will. . . If Mr. Bernard Shaw comes up to me and says, "Will something," that is tantamount to saying, "I do not mind what you will," and that is tantamount to saying, "I have no will in the matter." George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950) was an Irish playwright and a co-founder of the London School of Economics. Although his first profitable writing was music and literary criticism, in which capacity he wrote many highly articulate pieces of journalism, his main talent was for drama, and he wrote more than 60 plays. Nearly all his writings address prevailing social problems, but have a vein of comedy which makes their stark themes more palatable. Shaw examined education, marriage, religion, government, health care, and class privilege.
He was most angered by what he perceived as the exploitation of the working class. An ardent socialist, Shaw wrote many brochures and speeches for the Fabian Society. He became an accomplished orator in the furtherance of its causes, which included gaining equal rights for men and women, alleviating abuses of the working class, rescinding private ownership of productive land, and promoting healthy lifestyles. For a short time he was active in local politics, serving on the London County Council.

The historical record for these claims is clear, but many posters dispute the second point by stating (without support) that Shaw was being sarcastic. Unfortunately, this is clearly not the case as is obvious from reading Shaw's writings and public comments in the broad context of the time they were written.
When Shaw's controversial statements on eugenics were reported in the media, he did not dispute them or claim that the quotes were taken out of context.
I welcome anyone to challenge the director on these and other points, but please provide specific support for any claims rather than just stating your own wistful thinking on the topic.
Also, to avoid betraying your ignorance on Shaw's views, PLEASE READ at least Section One of the preface to Shaw's play "On the Rocks" which fleshes out the full logic and substance of Shaw's view on "extermination" BEFORE becoming the 1000th person to express your cognitive dissonance with an unsupported claim that "this must be satire" or that it was "taken out of context". In fact the historical context explains exactly why Shaw's logic was appealing at the time.

PLEASE READ: In this clip from the 2008 film "The Soviet Story", we see that George Bernard Shaw, the celebrated progressive playwright defended Hitler, advocated killing those who can't justify their existence and called for the development of lethal gas 10 years before the national socialists in Germany did exactly that.
George Bernard Shaw was one of the left's most revered figures and the only person to win both an Oscar and a Nobel prize.
In this clip Snore documents three points that many viewers find disturbing:
1. Shaw was a vocal supporter of Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini
2. Shaw supported mass killing of the unproductive
3. Shaw advocated creating a Zyklon-B type gas to allow more "humane" mass killing
The historical record for these claims is clear, but many posters dispute the second point by stating (without support) that Shaw was being sarcastic. Unfortunately, this is clearly not the case as is obvious from reading Shaw's writings and public comments in the broad context of the time they were written.
When Shaw's controversial statements on eugenics were reported in the media, he did not dispute them or claim that the quotes were taken out of context.
I welcome anyone to challenge the director on these and other points, but please provide specific support for any claims rather than just stating your own wistful thinking on the topic.
Also, to avoid betraying your ignorance on Shaw's views, PLEASE READ at least Section One of the preface to Shaw's play "On the Rocks" which fleshes out the full logic and substance of Shaw's view on "extermination" BEFORE becoming the 1000th person to express your cognitive dissonance with an unsupported claim that "this must be satire" or that it was "taken out of context". In fact the historical context explains exactly why Shaw's logic was appealing at the time.

Chesterton and Shaw were famous friends and enjoyed their arguments and discussions. Although rarely in agreement, they both maintained good-will towards and respect for each other. However, in his writing, Chesterton expressed himself very plainly on where they differed and why. In Heretics he writes of Shaw:
"After belabouring a great many people for a great many years for being unprogressive, Mr. Shaw has discovered, with characteristic sense, that it is very doubtful whether any existing human being with two legs can be progressive at all. Having come to doubt whether humanity can be combined with progress, most people, easily pleased, would have elected to abandon progress and remain with humanity. Mr. Shaw, not being easily pleased, decides to throw over humanity with all its limitations and go in for progress for its own sake. If man, as we know him, is incapable of the philosophy of progress, Mr. Shaw asks, not for a new kind of philosophy, but for a new kind of man. It is rather as if a nurse had tried a rather bitter food for some years on a baby, and on discovering that it was not suitable, should not throw away the food and ask for a new food, but throw the baby out of window, and ask for a new baby."
Shaw represented the new school of thought, humanism, which was rising at the time. Chesterton's views, on the other hand, became increasingly more focused towards the church. In Orthodoxy he writes:
"The worship of will is the negation of will. . . If Mr. Bernard Shaw comes up to me and says, "Will something," that is tantamount to saying, "I do not mind what you will," and that is tantamount to saying, "I have no will in the matter." George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950), known at his insistence simply as Bernard Shaw, was an Irish playwright, critic and polemicist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics extended from the 1880s to his death and beyond. He wrote more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1912) and Saint Joan (1923). With a range incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading dramatist of his generation, and in 1925 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 1938 he provided the screenplay for a filmed version of Pygmalion for which he received an Academy Award. Here's a virtual movie of the great George Bernard Shaw reading from his 1934 essay 1916 Rising John Bull’s Other Island which gave a critical appraisal of the Easter Rising of 1916 . The voice of George Bernard Shaw on this video was recorded by the late celebrated Australian/Irish actor and historian Peter O'shaughnessy (1923 - 2013).
"1916 Rising (Appendix to Preface of John Bull’s Other Island [1906], 1929): ‘[T]he sequel to these events confirmed my unheeded warning with a sanguinary completely of which I had no prevision. At Easter 1916 a handful of Irishmen seized the Dublin Post Office and proclaimed an Irish Republic, with one of their number, a schoolmaster named Pearse, as President. If all Ireland had risen at this gesture it would have been a serious matter for England, then up to her neck in the war against the Central Empires. But there was no response: the gesture was a complete failure. All that was necessary was to blockade the Post Office until its microcosmic republic was starved out and made ridiculous. What actually happened would be incredible if there were not so many living witnesses of it. […] Thus by fire and bullet, murder and torture and devastation, a situation was produced in which the British Government [470] had either to capitulate at the cost of a far more complete concession of self-government to Ireland than that decreed by the repudiated Home Rule Act, or to let loose the military strength of England in a Cromwellian reconquest, massacre, and replantation which it knew that public opinion in England and America would not tolerate; for some of the most conspicuous English champions of Ulster warned the Government that they could stand no more of the Black and Tan terrorism. And so we settled the Irish Question, not as civilised and reasonable men should have settled it, but as dogs settle a dispute over a bone.’ (Complete Prefaces, London 1934, pp.470-71.)"

He wrote more than sixty plays, including major works such as Man and Superman (1902), Pygmalion (1912) and Saint Joan (1923). With a range incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, Shaw became the leading dramatist of his generation, and in 1925 was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. In 1938 he provided the screenplay for a filmed version of Pygmalion for which he received an Academy Award.

Hello Again Thoughtful Travelers! Welcome to today’s thought for March 17, 2016.
It’s by George Bernard Shaw, the Irish playwright who was awarded the 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature and the 1939 Oscar for Best Writing Adapted Screenplay, making him the only person ever to receive both awards. He lived from 1856 to 1950.
“I dislike feeling at home when I am abroad.”

“I’m sure Shaw said this long before the phrase ‘comfort zone’ was coined, but he definitely wanted to step outside his when he went abroad. He wanted to feel for at least a short period of time what is was like to be a local. He was seeking authenticity. Experiencing other cultures can be artificial - just packaged for tourist consumption - or superficial, because unless you live there for a while, it’s hard to experience it in any great detail. But by embracing the local customs and lifestyle, you can at least get a firsthand taste of what makes the people different and special, and that’s a major benefit of traveling.”

They settled in Ayot St Lawrence in a house now called Shaw's Corner. Shaw died there, aged 94, from chronic problems exacerbated by injuries he incurred by falling from a ladder. He is the only person to have been awarded both a Nobel Prize in Literature (1925) and an Oscar (1938), for his contributions to literature and for his work on the film Pygmalion (adaptation of his play of the same name), respectively.Shaw wanted to refuse his Nobel Prize outright because he had no desire for public honours, but accepted it at his wife's behest: she considered it a tribute to Ireland. The play questions Victorian notions of love and marriage, asking what a woman really desires from her husband. The cleric is a Christian Socialist, allowing Shaw—himself a Fabian Socialist—to weave political issues, current at the time, into the story. Shaw attempted but failed to have a production of the play put on in the 1890s. However, in late 1903 actor Arnold Daly had such a great success with the play that Shaw would write by 1904 that New York was seeing "an outbreak of Candidamania." The play would soon be done in a notable London production, when, in 1904, The Royal Court Theatre performed it in six matinees. The same theatre would go on to successfully stage several of Shaw's plays from 1904 to 1907, including further revivals of Candida.

However, in late 1903 actor Arnold Daly had such a great success with the play that Shaw would write by 1904 that New York was seeing "an outbreak of Candidamania." The play would soon be done in a notable London production, when, in 1904, The Royal Court Theatre performed it in six matinees. The same theatre would go on to successfully stage several of Shaw's plays from 1904 to 1907, including further revivals of Candida.

In essa, per la regia di Franco Enriquez, recitarono alcuni dei più grandi attori teatrali italiani del Novecento, tra i quali si riconoscono Lea Padovani (Cleopatra), Renzo Ricci (Giulio Cesare), Giulio Oppi (Potino), Paolo Carlini (Apollodoro), Giulio Bosetti (Lucio Settimio), Romolo Costa (Britanno), Vittorio Sanipoli (Rufio).
