Schale (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEAW-oZ75nc ) war Organist am Berliner Dom, der Hofkirche der brandenburgischen Kurfürsten. 1465 wurde die Kapelle im neu errichteten Berliner Schloß Sitz eines Kollegiatsstifts. Kurfürst Joachim I. (+1535) betrieb die Verlegung dieses Stifts an die südlich neben dem Schloß gelegene Dominikanerkirche, nach dem Vorbild des Neuen Stifts in Halle: sein Bruder, Kardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg, hatte in seiner Residenzstadt Halle 1520 ebenfalls die Dominikanerkirche zur Stiftskirche erhoben und in der Folge als Hofkirche prächtig umgebaut. Auch in Berlin wurde die Kirche aufwendig neugestaltet, und wie in Halle gab der Volksmund ihr den Namen "Dom". Als solcher wirkte sie zumal, nachdem um 1600 die Westfassade Zwillingstürme erhielt, die in der Merian'schen Stadtansicht von 1652 hervorstechen. 1539 führte Joachim II. in Brandenburg halbherzig die Reformation ein, doch bestand nicht nur das Stiftskapitel fort, sondern man hielt im Dom bis 1608 an katholischen liturgischen Gebräuchen wie Ornaten und Prozessionen fest. 1613 trat mit Kurfürst Johann Sigismund das Herrscherhaus vom lutherischen zum reformierten (calvinistischen) Bekenntnis über (die Bevölkerung blieb lutherisch). Der Dom wurde seiner prächtigen Ausstattung beraubt und innen weiß getüncht. Ab 1699 entstand das Schloß in barocken Formen und größer neu. Der Dom nebenan erschien nun altertümlich und unpassend, grandiose Entwürfe für einen Ersatz entstanden. Doch erst Friedrich II. ließ das Bauwerk 1747 abreißen, um auf der Nordseite des Schlosses einen freilich nur mäßig aufwendigen neuen Dom zu errichten. So wirkte die Kuppel (wie bei den friderizianischen "Domen" auf dem Gendarmenmarkt oder beim Neuen Palais in Potsdam) nur äußerlich. Das Innere war ein flachgedeckter, quergerichteter Rechtecksaal. Gegenüber dem mittig in der Längsseite gelegenen Hauptportal befanden sich, übereinander, Altar, Kanzel und Orgel. (Der Altar wurde später an die nördliche Schmalseite verlegt.) Die 1719-21 von Joh. Michael Röder erbaute Orgel (32/ii+P) wurde 1753 im neuen Dom wiedererrichtet. Anläßlich eines Umbaus des Doms 1816-17 ersetzte man die Orgel durch ein neues Instrument. In 1465 a college of canons was attached to the palace chapel. Elector Joachim I (+1535) transplanted this to the Greyfriars Church immediately south of the palace. He was following the example of his brother, cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg, who resided in the town of Halle: there, in 1520, he had also transformed the Greyfriars Church into a church serving his court. In Berlin, as in Halle, the existing church was lavishly rebuilt and appointed, and in Berlin as in Halle it became popularly known as "Dom" (cathedral, or in a wider sense any grand church). In Berlin the name must have seemed even more apposite after the west front of the church was equipped, around the turn of the 17th c., with twin towers that dominate the view of Berlin in a 1652 engraving by Merian. In 1539 Joachim II halfheartedly joined the reformation, but the college of canons continued to exist and until 1608 clung to old-style liturgical practices like chasubles and processions. In 1613 elector Johann Sigismund abandoned lutheranism for calvinism: from then on the dynasty was calvinist, though the population remained lutheran. The cathedral was stripped of its sumptuous furnishings and the interior was whitewashed. From 1699 onwards the palace was rebuilt in baroque style and on a grander scale. The cathedral next door now seemed antiquated and inappropriate; architects designed grandiose replacements. But it was only in 1747 that Frederic II had the building demolished and replaced by a new cathedral to the north of the palace. This was only moderately grandiose: in particular the cupola that dominated the exterior was not visible inside, as is also the case with other projects from Frederic's reign. Rather, the inside of the church was a rectangle with a flat ceiling entered on one of the long sides, with the altar, pulpit and organ arranged on top of each other opposite the main door. (Later the altar was moved to one of the short sides.) The organ (32/ii+P) built by Johann Michael Röder in 1719-21 was re-erected in 1753, but replaced by a new instrument in the context of alterations to the cathedral in 1816-17. Finally in 1894 the building had to make way for the present cathedral.
