[TRANSCRIPT] This is Peter, perhaps you know him? Peter works for the welfare of his family and, incidentally, also for 500 million inhabitants of Europe - and one of them is you! Peter works for Eurostat, the European Statistical Office, one of the main institutions of the European Union. And Peter loves coffee in all its variations, like all Europeans love coffee. An important task Peter has, is the calculation of the gross domestic product, GDP, for regions. The GDP is a measure of the economic performance and forms the total value of all goods produced and services rendered in a certain period. The GDP thus constitutes a measure of economic performance, economic growth and material prosperity. A further object of Peter at Eurostat is the calculation of the harmonized index of consumer prices, HICP, for measuring the rate of inflation in Europe. A central concept in this context is the basket of goods, which is a collection of products and services that are most frequently requested. A third task of Eurostat is the calculation of purchasing power parities, PPP. Only through PPP, the previously mentioned aspects are measurable in a realistic way. All three concepts are interdependent and can only work together. Without them, any policy-making at European level would not be feasible.
