Amid fierce fighting, Nigerian-led West African peacekeepers took control of Sierra Leone's heavily fortified northern town of Makeni on Tuesday.
The advancing forces freed about 30 church missionaries and workers who had been trapped in a church for about three weeks by the fighting.
Last month, the West African army known as ECOMOG drove Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Paul Koroma's junta from the capital, Freetown.
An APTV camera crew filmed exclusive footage of ECOMOG troops taking Makeni.
These exclusive A-P-T-V pictures show a convoy of Nigerian-led ECOMOG peacekeepers on the road to Makeni.
The provincial capital, 200 kilometres (130 miles) north of the capital Freetown, was the next objective for these troops after driving out the rebels in Lunsar.
The Nigeria-led intervention force took control of Freetown in February and has since been fighting to expand its control in the rest of the countryside.
At one point, the ECOMOG troops were attacked from the bush by rebel forces.
But after a fierce fight, the rebels were overpowered and some were taken prisoner.
The Nigerian-led West African peacekeepers entered Makeni and started firing their automatic weapons to try to flush out any rebels who had not already fled.
Once the town was secure, the residents emerged from their houses to cheer the liberating troops.
Swift retribution for one suspected rebel was dealt out by the locals, and it was left to ECOMOG troops to save him.
The arrival of the troops also meant freedom for around 30 church missionaries and workers.
They had been trapped in their church for more than two weeks, listening to the gunfire and not daring to venture out into the street.
With obvious relief, they held a thanksgiving service in the church that had been both their sanctuary and prison.
This rebel was wounded during the recent fighting.
He was treated by a western doctor whose surgery had been looted and destroyed by her patient's comrades.

"Well, I think the worst part about it was that we just didn't know what was going to happen. We're stuck in this place here, you hear the shooting around, you hear the R-P-G's ( rocket propelled grenades) going. As ex-pats, we were asked to stay here, not to go into the town, so we really just didn't know what was happening. And you get people coming in and out all the time telling their stories of the looting, of the raping, and they say, 'When are they going to come here?'"

The ECOMOG forces have a regional mandate to reinstate the civilian government.
President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was overthrown in a bloody coup last year which was organised by Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Paul Koroma.
Kabbah was sent into exile in neighbouring Guinea.
He is expected to return to Freetown on March 10th, where preparations are underway for his arrival.

Here, six motorised units of the Nigerian-led intervention force ECOMOG help the force consolidate its grip on Sierra Leone after the weekend victory over rebel forces.
This is Goderich, a traditionally rebel area on the west of the capital, Freetown.
Rebel forces loyal to the overthrown junta are still fighting ECOMOG here and in some other areas.
Hence the show of ECOMOG force.
Local civilians seem to welcome that.
Following the weekend's victory, the peacekeepers now want to start restoring law and order.
Looters will be shot on sight, they announced on Sunday.
These troops launched their offensive last week to drive the country's military junta from power.
It appears to be the first time that outside African military forces have been used to restore an elected African government, rather than topple it.

The new authorities in Freetown - capital of Sierra Leone - have begun to impose order on the city after a bloody fight for control.
The military force - made up of troops from other West African states - is now battling to extend its power throughout the rest of the country.
But the ECOMOG troops still have to combat vigilante gangs, widespread hunger and the threat of disease spread by exposed and rotting corpses.
The fight for Freetown has ended - but the long process of bringing peace to Sierra Leone is a long way from over.
Civil war is still raging in many parts of the country and even the capital - now in the hands of an international military force, ECOMOG, - is a disaster area.
ECOMOG is continuing to round up supporters of the previous military dictatorship - both soldiers and civilians.
On Monday they were out collecting weapons and military equipment.
They interrogated one man in an alleyway, and kept watch over others suspected of being soldiers in the former army - now prisoners.
But they want to keep security in their own hands and prevent civilians from doling out their own brand of justice.
That's going to be difficult.

"No amnesty. No nothing. This junta should be killed. This junta should be hanged. We don't want to have no amnesty for these people. The have no mercy on us, we should have no mercy on them."

After a year of fighting - essential services have been wrecked and burnt-out buildings are threatening to collapse.
Families are still having to shelter from stray bullets fired between roving street gangs intent on looting and scavenging.
State-owned radio called on government employees and other public officials to return to their jobs.
But medical outposts are in dire need of supplies.
In the Connaught Hospital on Sunday, doctors tried their best to help the wounded, many of whom are small children.

"We do not have blood and facilities to administer blood. At the moment we are treating (patients) who are bleeding profusely and need emergency transfusions."

Ecomog soldiers in Sierra Leone have all but defeated troops loyal to the ousted junta leader Lt-Colonel Johnny Paul Koroma.
With 118 dead, hundreds more wounded and parts of the capital in ruins, the price for restoring democracy the West African state however is mounting.
As fighting in the capital was quelled to all but sporadic resistance, hospital officials on Saturday began to tally the cost in human lives.
Nigerian-led troops in control of Freetown also worked to curb additional bloodshed by angry mobs bent on revenge against Sierra Leone's military junta the Nigerians fought to oust.
It's been a brief but bloody campaign for the mainly Nigerian Ecomog force, and for the war weary troops this was a moment to savour.
As they drove through the shattered streets of the capital Freetown, the people gave them an unequivocal welcome - with Ecomog in control they hope the democracy under their former President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah can be restored.
However Ecomog forces do not yet control the whole of the city.
They still have the task of combing the streets of the battered capital and seeking out remaining troops loyal to ousted junta leader Lt-Colonel Johnny Paul Koroma.
Nevertheless the relief of their commander was evident.

Koroma was still missing on Saturday, while other junta troops continued to lay down their arms.
The crackle of gunfire also could be heard from junta
soldiers holding out in the streets near the city's coastline.
At least 118 people have died during fighting between Nigerian troops
and junta gunmen in recent days.
The majority of the dead and wounded were civilians.
The mainly Nigerian troops now in control of Freetown are part of a West African coalition force charged with returning ex-President Kabbah to power by toppling the military junta that has ruled since his ousting.
It may be the first time outside military might has been used by Africans to restore an elected government, rather than topple it.
Since the junta's May coup, Sierra Leone has been virtually cut off from the rest of Africa and much of the world.
Apart from humanitarian relief supplies, Freetown was shut down by a port and land blockade.
Up to 18 percent of civilians in the country's northern districts face acute malnutrition, CARE, the World Food Programme and other aid groups have warned.
Clandestine radio, meanwhile, said Kabbah was expected to return
to Freetown within two weeks, although the president gave no
specific date in his speech.

Soldiers in Sierra Leone met high-ranking Nigerian military officers on Wednesday in a bid to calm the situation in the West African country following last month's military coup.
Several people died during clashes between Nigerian forces and rebels allied with the Sierra Leone army on Tuesday night.
Nigerian forces were deployed to Sierra Leone in 1990, to support a regional peacekeeping force for neighbouring Liberia.
The delegation from the West African peace keeping force known as Ecomog arrived in the Sierra Leone capital on Wednesday charged with defusing the ever growing tension.
The situation in Freetown remains critical following fighting near the international airport during Tuesday night.
Nigerian troops holding Lungi airport, situated just outside the capital, clashed with renegade troops allied with the Sierra Leone army, which staged a coup last month.
The Nigerian forces were deployed to Sierra Leone in 1990, in part to support a regional peacekeeping force for neighbouring Liberia.
The latest exchange of fire caused panic in Freetown where many people fear Nigerian troops will attempt to reinstate ousted president Ahmed Tejan Kabbah by force.

A week after the May 25 coup - a Nigerian naval bombardment from gun ships off the coast led to fighting that killed at least 50 people.

The rebel Revolutionary United Front has allied itself with the ruling Armed Forces Revolutionary Council.
With continued unrest and fear of another Nigerian attack, the situation remains highly charged and chaotic.

The Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group ('ECOMOG) was a West African multilateral armed force established by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). ECOMOG was a formal arrangement for separate armies to work together. Its backbone was Nigerian armed forces and financial resources, with sub-battalion strength units contributed by other ECOWAS members — Ghana, Guinea, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Liberia, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and others.
Nigeria, Ghana and other ECOWAS members agreed a Protocol on Mutual Defence Assistance, in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on 29 May 1981. Among other organs such as a Defence Committee and Council, it provided for the establishment of an Allied Armed Force of the Community (AAFC) as needed.
Anglophone ECOWAS members established ECOMOG in 1990 to intervene in the civil war in Liberia (1989–96). Nigerian scholar Adekeye Adebajo wrote in 2002 that "there was merit...in the argument that the establishment of ECOMOG did not conform to the constitutional legal requirements of ECOWAS". The Standing Mediation Committee, the body that established ECOMOG at its meeting in Banjul, Gambia on 6–7 August 1990, was 'on shaky legal foundations.' Adebajo concludes that the arguments used to establish ECOMOG had more solid grounds in politics than in law. The Defence Protocol's guidelines were not followed, and ECOMOG was justified largely on humanitarian grounds.

It's been a brief but bloody campaign for the mainly Nigerian Ecomog force, and for the war weary troops this was a moment to savour. As they drove through the shattered streets of the capital Freetown, the people gave them an unequivocal welcome - with Ecomog in control they hope the democracy under their former President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah can be restored. However Ecomog forces do not yet control the whole of the city. They still have the task of combing the streets of the battered capital and seeking out remaining troops loyal to ousted junta leader Lt-Colonel Johnny Paul Koroma. Nevertheless the relief of their commander was evident. SOUNDBITE: (English) Yes it was a seven day campaign and we're lucky, we made it. I think it was because of very articulate ( ie good) planning. SUPER CAPTION: Colonel Rauf Apata, Ecomog commander in charge of Freetown Koroma was still missing on Saturday, while other junta troops continued to lay down their arms. The crackle of gunfire also could be heard from junta soldiers holding out in the streets near the city's coastline. At least 118 people have died during fighting between Nigerian troops and junta gunmen in recent days. The majority of the dead and wounded were civilians. The mainly Nigerian troops now in control of Freetown are part of a West African coalition force charged with returning ex-President Kabbah to power by toppling the military junta that has ruled since his ousting. It may be the first time outside military might has been used by Africans to restore an elected government, rather than topple it. Since the junta's May coup, Sierra Leone has been virtually cut off from the rest of Africa and much of the world. Apart from humanitarian relief supplies, Freetown was shut down by a port and land blockade. Up to 18 percent of civilians in the country's northern districts face acute malnutrition, CARE, the World Food Programme and other aid groups have warned. Clandestine radio, meanwhile, said Kabbah was expected to return to Freetown within two weeks, although the president gave no specific date in his speech. Several people died during clashes between Nigerian forces and rebels allied with the Sierra Leone army on Tuesday night. Nigerian forces were deployed to Sierra Leone in 1990, to support a regional peacekeeping force for neighbouring Liberia. The delegation from the West African peace keeping force known as Ecomog arrived in the Sierra Leone capital on Wednesday charged with defusing the ever growing tension. The situation in Freetown remains critical following fighting near the international airport during Tuesday night. Nigerian troops holding Lungi airport, situated just outside the capital, clashed with renegade troops allied with the Sierra Leone army, which staged a coup last month. The Nigerian forces were deployed to Sierra Leone in 1990, in part to support a regional peacekeeping force for neighbouring Liberia. The latest exchange of fire caused panic in Freetown where many people fear Nigerian troops will attempt to reinstate ousted president Ahmed Tejan Kabbah by force. Mansaray - Sierra Leone Military A week after the May 25 coup - a Nigerian naval bombardment from gun ships off the coast led to fighting that killed at least 50 people. Nigeria has warned of further attacks unless the ousted president is allowed to return to power. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Navy has stationed two more vessels off the coast. The rebel Revolutionary United Front has allied itself with the ruling Armed Forces Revolutionary Council. With continued unrest and fear of another Nigerian attack, the situation remains highly charged and chaotic. An APTV camera crew filmed exclusive footage of ECOMOG troops taking Makeni.
These exclusive A-P-T-V pictures show a convoy of Nigerian-led ECOMOG peacekeepers on the road to Makeni.
The provincial capital, 200 kilometres (130 miles) north of the capital Freetown, was the next objective for these troops after driving out the rebels in Lunsar.
The Nigeria-led intervention force took control of Freetown in February and has since been fighting to expand its control in the rest of the countryside.
At one point, the ECOMOG troops were attacked from the bush by rebel forces.
But after a fierce fight, the rebels were overpowered and some were taken prisoner.
The Nigerian-led West African peacekeepers entered Makeni and started firing their automatic weapons to try to flush out any rebels who had not already fled.
Once the town was secure, the residents emerged from their houses to cheer the liberating troops.
Swift retribution for one suspected rebel was dealt out by the locals, and it was left to ECOMOG troops to save him.
The arrival of the troops also meant freedom for around 30 church missionaries and workers.
They had been trapped in their church for more than two weeks, listening to the gunfire and not daring to venture out into the street.
With obvious relief, they held a thanksgiving service in the church that had been both their sanctuary and prison.
This rebel was wounded during the recent fighting.
He was treated by a western doctor whose surgery had been looted and destroyed by her patient's comrades.

"Well, I think the worst part about it was that we just didn't know what was going to happen. We're stuck in this place here, you hear the shooting around, you hear the R-P-G's ( rocket propelled grenades) going. As ex-pats, we were asked to stay here, not to go into the town, so we really just didn't know what was happening. And you get people coming in and out all the time telling their stories of the looting, of the raping, and they say, 'When are they going to come here?'"

The ECOMOG forces have a regional mandate to reinstate the civilian government.
President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was overthrown in a bloody coup last year which was organised by Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Paul Koroma.
Kabbah was sent into exile in neighbouring Guinea.
He is expected to return to Freetown on March 10th, where preparations are underway for his arrival.

An APTV camera crew filmed exclusive footage of ECOMOG troops taking Makeni.
These exclusive A-P-T-V pictures show a convoy of Nigerian-led ECOMOG peacekeepers on the road to Makeni.
The provincial capital, 200 kilometres (130 miles) north of the capital Freetown, was the next objective for these troops after driving out the rebels in Lunsar.
The Nigeria-led intervention force took control of Freetown in February and has since been fighting to expand its control in the rest of the countryside.
At one point, the ECOMOG troops were attacked from the bush by rebel forces.
But after a fierce fight, the rebels were overpowered and some were taken prisoner.
The Nigerian-led West African peacekeepers entered Makeni and started firing their automatic weapons to try to flush out any rebels who had not already fled.
Once the town was secure, the residents emerged from their houses to cheer the liberating troops.
Swift retribution for one suspected rebel was dealt out by the locals, and it was left to ECOMOG troops to save him.
The arrival of the troops also meant freedom for around 30 church missionaries and workers.
They had been trapped in their church for more than two weeks, listening to the gunfire and not daring to venture out into the street.
With obvious relief, they held a thanksgiving service in the church that had been both their sanctuary and prison.
This rebel was wounded during the recent fighting.
He was treated by a western doctor whose surgery had been looted and destroyed by her patient's comrades.

"Well, I think the worst part about it was that we just didn't know what was going to happen. We're stuck in this place here, you hear the shooting around, you hear the R-P-G's ( rocket propelled grenades) going. As ex-pats, we were asked to stay here, not to go into the town, so we really just didn't know what was happening. And you get people coming in and out all the time telling their stories of the looting, of the raping, and they say, 'When are they going to come here?'"

The ECOMOG forces have a regional mandate to reinstate the civilian government.
President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was overthrown in a bloody coup last year which was organised by Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Paul Koroma.
Kabbah was sent into exile in neighbouring Guinea.
He is expected to return to Freetown on March 10th, where preparations are underway for his arrival.

This is Goderich, a traditionally rebel area on the west of the capital, Freetown.
Rebel forces loyal to the overthrown junta are still fighting ECOMOG here and in some other areas.

Local civilians seem to welcome that.

But the ECOMOG troops still have to combat vigilante gangs, widespread hunger and the threat of disease spread by exposed and rotting corpses.
The fight for Freetown has ended - but the long process of bringing peace to Sierra Leone is a long way from over.
Civil war is still raging in many parts of the country and even the capital - now in the hands of an international military force, ECOMOG, - is a disaster area.
ECOMOG is continuing to round up supporters of the previous military dictatorship - both soldiers and civilians.
On Monday they were out collecting weapons and military equipment.
They interrogated one man in an alleyway, and kept watch over others suspected of being soldiers in the former army - now prisoners.
But they want to keep security in their own hands and prevent civilians from doling out their own brand of justice.
That's going to be difficult.

"No amnesty. No nothing. This junta should be killed. This junta should be hanged. We don't want to have no amnesty for these people. The have no mercy on us, we should have no mercy on them."

Families are still having to shelter from stray bullets fired between roving street gangs intent on looting and scavenging.
State-owned radio called on government employees and other public officials to return to their jobs.
But medical outposts are in dire need of supplies.
In the Connaught Hospital on Sunday, doctors tried their best to help the wounded, many of whom are small children.

"We do not have blood and facilities to administer blood. At the moment we are treating (patients) who are bleeding profusely and need emergency transfusions."

What they find when they get there may make them wish they never returned.
Dead bodies are lying in buildings or being hastily buried in emergency graveyards.

With 118 dead, hundreds more wounded and parts of the capital in ruins, the price for restoring democracy the West African state however is mounting.
As fighting in the capital was quelled to all but sporadic resistance, hospital officials on Saturday began to tally the cost in human lives.
Nigerian-led troops in control of Freetown also worked to curb additional bloodshed by angry mobs bent on revenge against Sierra Leone's military junta the Nigerians fought to oust.
It's been a brief but bloody campaign for the mainly Nigerian Ecomog force, and for the war weary troops this was a moment to savour.
As they drove through the shattered streets of the capital Freetown, the people gave them an unequivocal welcome - with Ecomog in control they hope the democracy under their former President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah can be restored.
However Ecomog forces do not yet control the whole of the city.
They still have the task of combing the streets of the battered capital and seeking out remaining troops loyal to ousted junta leader Lt-Colonel Johnny Paul Koroma.
Nevertheless the relief of their commander was evident.
