Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard ranks among the most scathing satires of Hollywood and the cruel fickleness of movie fandom. The story begins at the end as the body of Joe Gillis (William Holden) is fished out of a Hollywood swimming pool. From The Great Beyond, Joe details the circumstances of his untimely demise (originally, the film contained a lengthy prologue wherein the late Mr. Gillis told his tale to his fellow corpses in the city morgue, but this elicited such laughter during the preview that Wilder changed it). Hotly pursued by repo men, impoverished, indebted "boy wonder" screenwriter Gillis ducks into the garage of an apparently abandoned Sunset Boulevard mansion. Wandering into the spooky place, Joe encounters its owner, imperious silent star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). Upon learning Joe's profession, Norma inveigles him into helping her with a comeback script that she's been working on for years. Joe realizes that the script is hopeless, but the money is good and he has nowhere else to go. Soon the cynical and opportunistic Joe becomes Norma's kept man. While they continue collaborating, Norma's loyal and protective chauffeur Max Von Mayerling (played by legendary filmmaker Erich von Stroheim) contemptuously watches from a distance. More melodramatic than funny, the screenplay by Wilder and Charles Brackett began life as a comedy about a has-been silent movie actress and the ambitious screenwriter who leeches off her. (Wilder originally offered the film to Mae West, Mary Pickford and Pola Negri. Montgomery Clift was the first choice for the part of opportunistic screenwriter Joe Gillis, but he refused, citing as "disgusting" the notion of a 25-year-old man being kept by a 50-year-old woman.) While technically not a great singer, Glenn is without question the best actor who portrayed the iconic (and fictional) aging silent film star, Norma Desmond, on stage. This kind of acting alone deserves both a Tony and an Oscar (hint, hint ALW). She could have been the definitive Norma if only she had the phenomenal vocal chops of either Betty Buckley or Elaine Paige.

Glenn Close
Glenn Close (born March 19, 1947) is an American film, television and stage actress. Throughout her long and varied career, she has been consistently acclaimed for her versatility and is widely regarded as one of the finest actresses of her generation. She has won three Emmy Awards, three Tony Awards and received six Academy Award nominations.
Close began her professional stage career in 1974 in Love for Love, and was mostly a New York stage actress through the rest of the 1970s and early 1980s, appearing in both plays and musicals, including the Broadway productions of Barnum in 1980 and The Real Thing in 1983, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play. Her first film role was in The World According to Garp (1982), which she followed up with supporting roles in The Big Chill (1983), and The Natural (1984); all three earned her nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She would later receive nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performances in Fatal Attraction (1987), Dangerous Liaisons (1988), and Albert Nobbs (2011). In the 1990s, she won two more Tony Awards, for Death and the Maiden in 1992 and Sunset Boulevard in 1995, while she won her first Emmy Award for the 1995 TV film Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story.

The story begins at the end as the body of Joe Gillis (William Holden) is fished out of a Hollywood swimming pool. From The Great Beyond, Joe details the circumstances of his untimely demise (originally, the film contained a lengthy prologue wherein the late Mr. Gillis told his tale to his fellow corpses in the city morgue, but this elicited such laughter during the preview that Wilder changed it). Hotly pursued by repo men, impoverished, indebted "boy wonder" screenwriter Gillis ducks into the garage of an apparently abandoned Sunset Boulevard mansion. Wandering into the spooky place, Joe encounters its owner, imperious silent star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). Upon learning Joe's profession, Norma inveigles him into helping her with a comeback script that she's been working on for years. Joe realizes that the script is hopeless, but the money is good and he has nowhere else to go. Soon the cynical and opportunistic Joe becomes Norma's kept man. While they continue collaborating, Norma's loyal and protective chauffeur Max Von Mayerling (played by legendary filmmaker Erich von Stroheim) contemptuously watches from a distance. More melodramatic than funny, the screenplay by Wilder and Charles Brackett began life as a comedy about a has-been silent movie actress and the ambitious screenwriter who leeches off her. (Wilder originally offered the film to Mae West, Mary Pickford and Pola Negri. Montgomery Clift was the first choice for the part of opportunistic screenwriter Joe Gillis, but he refused, citing as "disgusting" the notion of a 25-year-old man being kept by a 50-year-old woman.) Andrew Lloyd Webber's long-running musical version has served as a tour-de-force for contemporary actresses ranging from Glenn Close to Betty Buckley to Diahann Carroll.

Joe (William Holden) is mistaken for a coffin maker when he meets the washed up movie star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson).

Billy Wilder's Sunset Boulevard ranks among the most scathing satires of Hollywood and the cruel fickleness of movie fandom. The story begins at the end as the body of Joe Gillis (William Holden) is fished out of a Hollywood swimming pool. From The Great Beyond, Joe details the circumstances of his untimely demise (originally, the film contained a lengthy prologue wherein the late Mr. Gillis told his tale to his fellow corpses in the city morgue, but this elicited such laughter during the preview that Wilder changed it). Hotly pursued by repo men, impoverished, indebted "boy wonder" screenwriter Gillis ducks into the garage of an apparently abandoned Sunset Boulevard mansion. Wandering into the spooky place, Joe encounters its owner, imperious silent star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). Upon learning Joe's profession, Norma inveigles him into helping her with a comeback script that she's been working on for years. Joe realizes that the script is hopeless, but the money is good and he has nowhere else to go. Soon the cynical and opportunistic Joe becomes Norma's kept man. While they continue collaborating, Norma's loyal and protective chauffeur Max Von Mayerling (played by legendary filmmaker Erich von Stroheim) contemptuously watches from a distance. More melodramatic than funny, the screenplay by Wilder and Charles Brackett began life as a comedy about a has-been silent movie actress and the ambitious screenwriter who leeches off her. Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond in the 'I am big. It's the pictures that got small' scene. Sunset Boulevard (also known as Sunset Blvd.) is a 1950 American film noir directed and co-written by Billy Wilder, and produced and co-written by Charles Brackett. It was named after the boulevard that runs through Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, California.
The film stars William Holden as Joe Gillis, an unsuccessful screenwriter, Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a faded silent movie star who draws him into her fantasy world where she dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen with Erich von Stroheim as Max Von Mayerling, her butler and ex-husband. Nancy Olson, Fred Clark, Lloyd Gough and Jack Webb play supporting roles. Director Cecil B. DeMille and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper play themselves, and the film includes cameo appearances by leading silent film actors Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner and Anna Q. Nilsson.

This bizarre curiosity is basically only of interest to hard-core musical theatre devotees. It has never been generally released and as most of the numbers are accompanied simply by a piano it seems to be a demo to promote the "show" to theatrical producers. I have no further information about this extraordinary recording which features Gloria Swanson, apart from what is on the sleeve - there are no other details. The parts of ‘Max' and ‘Joe' are not credited, neither is the date of the recording, though as it's recorded in stereo it's presumably at least into the 1960s (possibly late 50s). There are long dialogue scenes to link the songs and it's particularly interesting to hear Swanson actually singing. Carlos Mayolo

Desde su adolescencia, Mayolo hizo parte de un círculo de amigos y artistas, el llamado "Grupo de Cali" o "Caliwood" que incluyó a Luis Ospina, Andrés Caicedo, Ramiro Arbeláez y posteriormente Sandro Romero Rey y Óscar Campo, entre otros, quienes con proyectos concretos y utopías sicodélicas constituyeron uno de los momentos definitivos para el arte colombiano del siglo XX. Después de aprender los fundamentos del cine viendo muchísimas películas (en el Cine Club de Cali), escribiendo sobre cine (en Ojo al cine) y haciendo comerciales, Mayolo realizó numerosos cortos documentales y argumentales antes y durante la época de Focine, así como dos largometrajes. A finales de los ochenta empezó a trabajar en televisión, dirigiendo varios seriados de alta calidad y con esquemas relativamente innovadores, como Azúcar y Hombres. En 2006 recibió el Premio Nacional a toda una vida dedicada al cine, que otorga el Ministerio de Cultura.

It has never been generally released and as most of the numbers are accompanied simply by a piano it seems to be a demo to promote the "show" to theatrical producers. I have no further information about this extraordinary recording which features Gloria Swanson, apart from what is on the sleeve - there are no other details. The parts of ‘Max' and ‘Joe' are not credited, neither is the date of the recording, though as it's recorded in stereo it's presumably at least into the 1960s (possibly late 50s). There are long dialogue scenes to link the songs and it's particularly interesting to hear Swanson actually singing. The short notes on the sleeve read "This adaption of "Sunset Boulevard" follows the basic plot of the original script, focussing on the romance between the former star of silent pictures, Norma Desmond, and the out-of-work script writer, Joe Gillis, who happens to meet her when his car breaks down. Subtle changes set the musical apart from the original, and the most obvious change is that Joe remains alive - and in love (?) with Norma. However, all of the familiar figures are there, and many of the great lines. The musical was never produced on Broadway; this recording will give lovers of the musical theatre an idea of what the production could have been." The scenes and song titles are also listed on the sleeve. I was given this album by the actress Siân Phillips, but I have no idea where she found it, and it goes without saying that I do not own the rights to the disc - it is merely posted in the interest of theatrical history!

She is an actress/singer whose career spans theater, film, television and concert halls around the world. She most recently was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame for 2012.
Betty Buckley won a Tony Award for her performance as Grizabella, the Glamour Cat, in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS. She received her second Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a musical for her performance as Hesione in TRIUMPH OF LOVE, and an Olivier Award nomination for her critically acclaimed interpretation of Norma Desmond in the London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s SUNSET BOULEVARD, which she repeated to more rave reviews on Broadway.
Her other Broadway credits include 1776, PIPPIN, SONG AND DANCE, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and CARRIE. Off-Broadway credits include the world premiere of Horton Foote’s THE OLD FRIENDS for which she received a Drama Desk Nomination in 2014, WHITE’S LIES, Lincoln Center’s ELEGIES, the original NYSF production of EDWIN DROOD, THE EROS TRILOGY, JUNO SWANS and GETTING MY ACT TOGETHER AND TAKING IT ON THE ROAD. Her CD “Ah, Men! The Boys of Broadway” was released by Palmetto Records in August 2012. The CD GHOSTLIGHT produced by T Bone Burnett will be released in Fall 2014 also on Palmetto Records.
She received her second Grammy Nomination for the audio book THE DIARIES OF ADAM AND EVE. For over forty years Ms. Buckley has been a teacher of scene study and song interpretation, giving workshops in Manhattan and various universities and performing arts conservatories around the country. She has been a faculty member in the theatre department of the University of Texas at Arlington, the T. Schreiber Studio in New York City and currently teaches at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX.
In April of 2009, Ms. Buckley received the Texas Medal of Arts Award for Theater and was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame in 2007.

Betty Buckley won a Tony Award for her performance as Grizabella, the Glamour Cat, in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS. She received her second Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a musical for her performance as Hesione in TRIUMPH OF LOVE, and an Olivier Award nomination for her critically acclaimed interpretation of Norma Desmond in the London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s SUNSET BOULEVARD, which she repeated to more rave reviews on Broadway.
Her other Broadway credits include 1776, PIPPIN, SONG AND DANCE, THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and CARRIE. Off-Broadway credits include the world premiere of Horton Foote’s THE OLD FRIENDS for which she received a Drama Desk Nomination in 2014, WHITE’S LIES, Lincoln Center’s ELEGIES, the original NYSF production of EDWIN DROOD, THE EROS TRILOGY, JUNO SWANS and GETTING MY ACT TOGETHER AND TAKING IT ON THE ROAD. Regional credits include THE PERFECTIONSIT, GYPSY, THREEPENNY OPERA, CAMINO REAL, BUFFALO GAL, ARSENIC AND OLD LACE and THE OLD FRIENDS. She starred in the London production of DEAR WORLD in 2013 and PROMISES, PROMISES.
She co-starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s THE HAPPENING released in June 2008. Other films include her debut in Brian de Palma’s screen version of Stephen King’s CARRIE, Bruce Beresford’s TENDER MERCIES, Roman Polanski’s FRANTIC, Woody Allen’s ANOTHER WOMAN and Lawrence Kasden’s WYATT EARP.
On television, Buckley appeared in THE PACIFIC for HBO and on the Kennedy Center Honors in 2006 and 1983. She also starred for three seasons in the HBO series OZ and as Abby Bradford in the hit series EIGHT IS ENOUGH. She has appeared as a guest star in numerous television series, miniseries and films for television including EVERGREEN, ROSES FOR THE RICH, the CBS series WITHOUT A TRACE, LAW & ORDER: SVU for NBC, ABC Family’s PRETTY LITTLE LIARS and HBO’s GETTING ON.
Buckley has recorded 16 CD’s, among them BOOTLEG: BOARDMIXES FROM THE ROAD, QUINTESSENCE and BETTY BUCKLEY 1967 and the Grammy Nominated STARS AND THE MOON, BETTY BUCKLEY LIVE AT THE DONMAR. Her CD “Ah, Men! The Boys of Broadway” was released by Palmetto Records in August 2012. The CD GHOSTLIGHT produced by T Bone Burnett will be released in Fall 2014 also on Palmetto Records.
She received her second Grammy Nomination for the audio book THE DIARIES OF ADAM AND EVE. For over forty years Ms. Buckley has been a teacher of scene study and song interpretation, giving workshops in Manhattan and various universities and performing arts conservatories around the country. She has been a faculty member in the theatre department of the University of Texas at Arlington, the T. Schreiber Studio in New York City and currently teaches at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, TX.
In April of 2009, Ms. Buckley received the Texas Medal of Arts Award for Theater and was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame in 2007.

Here’s what you have…In Hollywood of the 50’s, the obscure screenplay writer Joe Gillis (William Holden) is not able to sell his work to the studios, is full of debts and is thinking in returning to his hometown to work in an office. While trying to escape from his creditors, he has a flat tire and parks his car in front of a crumbling decadent mansion on Sunset Boulevard, owned by former silent-movie star Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson), who lives alone with her butler Max. Norma is demented, and believes she will return to the cinema industry and escape the isolated world she has built for herself. Norma proposes Joe to move to the mansion and help her in writing a screenplay that will propel her inevitable comeback – but as things settle in, the small time writer find himself the eye of her affection, and when he falls in love for the young aspirant writer Betty Schaefer, Norma becomes jealous and completely insane – which leads to her madness as well as a tragic end.
