Turin (/tjᵿˈrɪn/ tewr-IN; Italian: Torino, pronounced [toˈriːno]; Piedmontese: Turin, pronounced [tyˈɾiŋ]; Lombard: Türì; Latin: Augusta Taurinorum) is a city and an important business and cultural centre in northern Italy, capital of the Piedmont region, located mainly on the left bank of the Po River, in front of Susa Valley and surrounded by the western Alpine arch and by the Superga Hill. The population of the city proper is 892,649 (August 2015) while the population of the urban area is estimated by Eurostat to be 1.7 million inhabitants. The Turin metropolitan area is estimated by the OECD to have a population of 2.2 million.
The city has a rich culture and history, and is known for its numerous art galleries, restaurants, churches, palaces, opera houses, piazzas, parks, gardens, theatres, libraries, museums and other venues. Turin is well known for its renaissance, baroque, rococo, neo-classical, and art nouveau architecture.
Much of the city's public squares, castles, gardens and elegant palazzi such as Palazzo Madama, were built in the 16th and 18th century, after the capital of the Duchy of Savoy (later Kingdom of Sardinia) was moved to Turin from Chambery (nowadays France) as part of the urban expansion.

Italy (i/ˈɪtəli/; Italian: Italia [iˈtaːlja]), officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica Italiana), is a unitary parliamentary republic in Europe. Italy covers an area of 301,338 km2 (116,347 sq mi) and has a largely Mediterranean and temperate climate; due to its shape, it is often referred to in Italy as lo Stivale (the Boot). With 61 million inhabitants, it is the 4th most populous EU member state. Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy shares open land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino and Vatican City.
Since ancient times, Greeks, Etruscans and Celts have inhabited the south, centre and north of the Italian Peninsula respectively. Rome ultimately emerged as the dominant power, conquering much of the ancient world and becoming the leading cultural, political, and religious centre of Western civilisation. The legacy of the Roman Empire is widespread and can be observed in the global distribution of civilian law, Republican governments, Christianity and the latin script.
Pension tax simplification, often simply referred to as "pension simplification" and taking effect from A-day on 6 April 2006 was a policy announced in 2004 by the Labour government to rationalise the British tax system as applied to pension schemes. The aim was to reduce the complicated patchwork of legislation built-up by successive administrations which were seen as acting as a barrier to the public when considering retirement planning. The government wanted to encourage retirement provision by simplifying the previous eight tax regimes into one single regime for all individual and occupational pensions.
Broadly the new regime allows considerable freedom in the tax relievable contributions that may be made to pension schemes, and the assets in which they may be invested. It also however caps the size of tax favoured pension fund that may be accumulated by an individual. This 'lifetime allowance' was set at £1.6M for 2007–08. Funds accumulated in excess of the lifetime allowance are subject to a tax charge of 55%. Transitional protection provisions were made for individuals who had already accumulated pension funds in excess of this amount.

This trip was part of a holiday to the Italian Riviera by rail. We join the first of many trains at Bognor Regis for the trip from England’s South Coast to London for an overnight stay, ready to catch an early morning Eurostar to Paris via the Channel Tunnel. Whilst in London we enjoy a pleasant stroll along Regents Canal from which we can watch trains to and from London St Pancras and Euston stations. We join our Paris bound train at St Pancras, passing through the Channel Tunnel into France. A short bus ride transfers us from Paris Gare Du Nord to Gare de Lyon for a fast TGV train to Turin. This installment finishes at Lyon, please lookout for Part 2 - Lyon to Turin over the French/Italian Alps.
Starting this leg of our journey at Lyon Gare de Saint-Exupéry, we leave the TGV line shortly after departing Lyon to join the traditional rail network near Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, travelling onward through relatively flat terrain punctuated with a mixture of towns, industrial landscape and farmland to Saint André le Gaz. Here we leave the double track main line to join a surprisingly rural singe track cross country route to Chambery serving attractive villages and towns such as Saint Beron La Bridoire, Arrêt de Lépin-le-Lac and Aiguebelette le Lac. Chambery is a real gem for railway enthusiasts complete with a working round house. At Montmélian we take the trans-alpine route to Turin via Modane, passing through spectacular scenery before entering the Frejus tunnel to emerge into Italy a...

In a tent or in a town?
It doesn't matter where you live.
You can soon be found.
Cause he is there wherever you are.
So turn, turn, turn to Allah.
