Adelaide, Australia, is one of the nation’s most striking cities. Situated over the River Torrens and overlooking the Gulf of St. Vincent, Adelaide is the perfect combination of big-city living and outdoor beauty.
Start out your Adelaide sightseeing by watching the sunrise at the beach, followed by a cup of tea or coffee at one of the many cafes around Victoria Square. The square is the heart of the city grid, and from there you can easily walk to some of Adelaide’s most striking 19th-century buildings. The nearby St. Francis Xavier Cathedral towers over Wakefield Street, and the Adelaide Central Market is a wonderful place to find fresh produce.
Just a few blocks north of Victoria Square is the South Australian Museum, where you can learn about the region’s history—both European and the cultures that predated them. From there, get outside and see some of the city’s natural charms. Residents are well aware of their beautiful surroundings, and Adelaide tours often include the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. This local point of pride is an exquisite collection of flora and fauna interspersed with fountains and walking trails.
When you’re ready to give your taste buds a treat, head for Barossa Valley, about 50 miles northeast of Adelaide. This is one of Australia’s oldest winemaking regions, and you can sample one of its legendary Rieslings. Pick up some groceries at one of the Barossa markets, purchase a bottle of wine at one of the vineyards, and pick a spot in this valley for the perfect picnic.

Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia and the fifth-largest city in Australia. In June 2013, Adelaide had an estimated resident population of 1.29 million. The demonym "Adelaidean" is used in reference to the city and its residents. Adelaide is north of the Fleurieu Peninsula, on the Adelaide Plains between the Gulf St Vincent and the low-lying Mount Lofty Ranges which surround the city. Adelaide stretches 20 km (12 mi) from the coast to the foothills, and 90 km (56 mi) from Gawler at its northern extent to Sellicks Beach in the south.

Named in honour of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, queen consort to King William IV, the city was founded in 1836 as the planned capital for a freely settled British province in Australia.Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, designed the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens in the area originally inhabited by the Kaurna people. Light's design set out Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parkland. Early Adelaide was shaped by religious freedom and a commitment to political progressivism and civil liberties, which led to the moniker "City of Churches".

South Australia (abbreviated as SA) is a state of Australia, located in the southern central part of the country. It covers some of the most arid parts of the continent; with a total land area of 983,482 square kilometres (379,725 sq mi), it is the fourth largest of Australia's six states and two territories.
South Australia shares borders with all of the mainland states and the Northern Territory. It is bordered to the west by Western Australia, to the north by the Northern Territory, to the north-east by Queensland, to the east by New South Wales, to the south-east by Victoria, and to the south by the Great Australian Bight and the Indian Ocean. With over 1.6 million people, the state comprises less than 8% of the Australian population and ranks fifth in population among the states and territories. The majority of its people reside in the state capital, Adelaide, with most of the remainder settled in fertile areas along the south-eastern coast and River Murray. The state's origins are unique in Australia as a freely settled, planned British province, rather than as a convict settlement. Official settlement began on 28 December 1836, when the colony was proclaimed at The Old Gum Tree by Governor John Hindmarsh.

Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia and the fifth-largest city in Australia. In June 2013, Adelaide had an estimated resident population of 1.29 million. The demonym "Adelaidean" is used in reference to the city and its residents. On our second full day in Adelaide South Australia we headed off up in to the hills, firstly we visited Morialta Conservation Park and had a walk up to the network of waterfalls there. After that we had lunch in Hahndorf before going to the Big Rocking Horse at Gumeracha then to the Whispering Wall near Williamstown. The following day we went for a walk at Anstey Hill Recreation Park, then visited the beach and bay discovery centre at Glenelg before going to the Airport for our flight to Canberra. Just a few blocks north of Victoria Square is the South Australian Museum, where you can learn about the region’s history—both European and the cultures that predated them. From there, get outside and see some of the city’s natural charms. Residents are well aware of their beautiful surroundings, and Adelaide tours often include the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. This local point of pride is an exquisite collection of flora and fauna interspersed with fountains and walking trails.
When you’re ready to give your taste buds a treat, head for Barossa Valley, about 50 miles northeast of Adelaide. This is one of Australia’s oldest winemaking regions, and you can sample one of its legendary Rieslings. Pick up some groceries at one of the Barossa markets, purchase a bottle of wine at one of the vineyards, and pick a spot in this valley for the perfect picnic.

Adelaide stretches 20 km (12 mi) from the coast to the foothills, and 90 km (56 mi) from Gawler at its northern extent to Sellicks Beach in the south.

01. Adelaide Zoo
Australia's second oldest zoo (after Melbourne Zoo), and the only major metropolitan zoo in Australia to be owned and operated on a non-profit basis. Houses about 300 native and exotic species, with over 1,800 animals on site. The giant panda exhibit, which opened in December 2009, is home to two giant pandas, Wang Wang and Funi.
02. Adelaide Botanic Garden
A 51 hectare (125 acres) public garden at the north-east corner of the Adelaide city centre. Amongst other scientific and educational displays of native and international horticulture, the gardens hold one of the earliest propagated specimens of the Wollemi Pine tree, which was discovered as recently as 1994.
03. Big Rocking Horse
A tourist attraction located in the town of Gumeracha. Designed by David McIntosh, the structure weighs 25 tonnes and stands at over 18 metres tall. Part of a larger complex that includes a wooden toy factory, wildlife park and café.
04. Adelaide Gaol
Was an Australian prison located in Thebarton. Was the first permanent one in South Australia and operated from 1841 until 1988. The Gaol is one of the two oldest buildings still standing in South Australia. Now a museum, tourist attraction and function centre.
05. National War Memorial
A monument in the city centre, commemorating those who served in the First World War. Memorial services are held at the site throughout the year, with major services on both Anzac Day (25 April) and Remembrance Day (11 November).
06. Bonython Park
A 17 hectare park in the West Parklands. Has one of Adelaide's best playgrounds - Bonython Park Adventure Playspace, a vibrant kiosk [Bonython Park Kiosk], boating lake, open kick/play fields and junior playground. On both sides of the river, multi-barbecue stations with picnic and relaxing spots are available for the public.
07. Himeji Gardens
Was a gift from Adelaide's sister city, Himeji, in 1982. The entrance is from South Terrace, between Pulteney and Hutt Streets. The garden in split into a sansui, a "mountain and lake garden", and a karesansui, a "dry rock garden" intended to evoke mountains surrounded by water.
08. Victoria Square
Also known as Tarndanyangga, is a public square. Is in the centre of the city's grid of one square mile. The Kaurna people know the area as Tarndanyangga, "The Dreaming Place of the Red Kangaroo". A statue of Queen Victoria stands near the centre of the square.
09. The Beachouse
An entertainment complex located on the foreshore at Glenelg. Has the following attractions: the Slides, the Cars, the Castle, the Carousel, the Golf, the Boats, the Train, the Wheel, a large game arcade, and a cafe.
10. Mount Bold Reservoir
The largest reservoir in South Australia with a maximum capacity of over forty-six thousand megalitres. Costing A$1.1 million, the reservoir took six years to construct on the Onkaparinga River system between 1932 and 1938. Is considered a possible site for a future commercial mini-hydro generator.

On our second full day in Adelaide South Australia we headed off up in to the hills, firstly we visited Morialta Conservation Park and had a walk up to the network of waterfalls there. After that we had lunch in Hahndorf before going to the Big Rocking Horse at Gumeracha then to the Whispering Wall near Williamstown. The following day we went for a walk at Anstey Hill Recreation Park, then visited the beach and bay discovery centre at Glenelg before going to the Airport for our flight to Canberra.

Litchfield National Park is actually a more popular National Park with territorian locals than Kakadu - why? You can visit all it's sites in one day, you can swim without fear of crocodiles, and you don't have to pay fees to get in. of particular note are it's swimming holes and waterfalls.
The Grove Hill Hotel is a real outback boozer 16 km's off the main road. Every month the publicans Stan and Mary put on a free bbq.
Had a great night, met some interesting locals, enjoyed the pre 1970's music Stan was playing...and even had a dance.
Katherine's major tourist attraction is the Katherine Gorge which consists of 13 natural gorges carved through sandstone by the Katherine River.
We interviewed a French Helicopter Pilot, William Massart, who takes joy flights over the gorge.
Wycliffe Well Roadhouse is known as Australia's premier U.F.O. sightings location. Numerous people have reported seeing strange lights in the sky while staying a Wycliffe.
I interviewed Lew Farkas, owner of the roadhouse about the U.F.O. sightings.
In Alice Springs we enjoyed trying crocodile, kangaroo, camel and emu at Overlander Steakhouse and let our hair down at Bojangles Saloon
Situated 117 km's West of Alice Springs. Wallace Rock Hole is an Aranda Aboriginal community which runs Aboriginal Culture Rockart tours which cover such things as bush medicine, bush tucker, the history of the Aranda people and visits to ancient rock art sites

In Coober Pedy we interviewed Jenny Gough from the Old Timers Mine
Jenny is a long term resident of Coober Pedy and in the video talks about how a stoke of good luck resulted in finding and funding the Old Timers Mine.

Start your day of Perth sightseeing with a walk through Kings Park, which is larger than New York’s Central Park and home to the Western Australia Botanic Garden. More than 3,000 species of Western Australia’s plant life, including vibrant flowers, are on display here. Most of the park consists of bushland, which means lots of wildlife and quite a few walking trails.
After a morning of reflection in the park, head over to the Swan Bell Tower to enjoy a spectacular view of the city. Don’t forget your camera! You will notice the diverse nature of Perth’s architecture from this vantage point, including the modern glass structures and London-inspired Tudor buildings.
Perth tours are never complete without a ferry ride to Rottnest Island, affectionately called “Rotto” by the locals. This getaway is rife with opportunities to snorkel in the Indian Ocean, see wildlife such as seals and birds, and travel across more than 31 miles of cycle ways on a rented bicycle.
Once your feet are back on mainland Western Australia, visit one of the jewels, and ultimately what draws much of the Perth tourism: Swan Valley. Darwin is a small yet cosmopolitan city. People from more than 50 nations make up its population of 110,000. It is on the Timor Sea (a branch of the Indian Ocean) in north-central Australia. Darwin is the tropical capital city of the Northern Territory.
Darwin has a relaxed lifestyle and unique multiculturalism, where people from over 50 different cultures live and work side by side. The regular Asian-style markets that form an intrinsic part of the everyday Darwin landscape for local residents see food, music, language, and culture from just about every Asian nation, alongside "crocodile hunters", local Aboriginal artists, musicians of every genre, sports fishing operators, sunset sails, and families with children playing on the beach. Darwin's unique cosmopolitan makeup has been recognised as an "multicultural icon of national significance" by the Australian National Trust.
Darwin's tropical climate has two major seasons, the 'dry', from about May to October, and the 'wet', from November to April. Major cyclones have occurred approximately once every three decades. Much of the city was destroyed by Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

Darwin Wharf Precinct, Darwin Wharf, Darwin, ☎ +61 8 8981 4268. At 9:58AM on 19 February 1942, the wharf was a target for Japanese bombs, which claimed the lives of many service personnel and waterside workers. Many of the historical landmarks remain and can be explored today.
Fannie Bay Gaol, East Point Rd, Fannie Bay. 10:30AM-4PM. Fannie Bay Gaol operated as Darwin’s major prison for almost 100 years from 1883. Two maximum security wings were added during the 1950s and the gallows were used for executions until 1952. The building’s grim and oppressive history can be felt as you walk through. free.
Burnett House at Myilly Point, Myilly Point, ☎ +61 8 8981 0165, Architect B.C.G. Burnett designed homes adapted to the climatic conditions of the Top End, which included the use of lightweight materials and natural ventilation. It is worth leaving your visit to Myilly Point until Sunday afternoon, when you can take High Tea in the shady tropical gardens at Burnett House.
Browns Mart, ☎ +61 8 8981 5522, [13]. Browns Mart is a stone building that was opened in 1885 as the store ‘Solomon’s Emporium’. It played many roles over the years, but today has become a cultural and historic icon of the city that is regularly used for theatre and performances.
Adelaide River War Cemetery. During World War II, Adelaide River township was the site of a large military base. The war cemetery created there is now the final resting place for 434 military personnel and civilians involved in the war effort. The cemetery is set in lush surrounds alongside the Adelaide River with beautifully tended gardens providing a peaceful backdrop for remembering the fallen.
Lyons Cottage, ☎ +61 8 8999 8201. Lyons Cottage, overlooking Darwin Harbour on The Esplanade, was built in 1925 to house staff working on the submarine cable that connected Australia with Britain. Also known as British Australia Telegraph (BAT) House, Lyons Cottage survived the Japanese bombing raids of 1942 and 1943 and escaped structural damage from Cyclone Tracy in 1974. The Cottage today houses the local indigenous tourism booking service.
The Old Court House and Police. Built in 1884 for the South Australian Government, these colonial style buildings made from local stone have housed criminals, the Navy and today the NT Administrator’s Offices. Restored after damage by Cyclone Tracy, these buildings are a stark reminder of the Darwin of yesteryear.
Aviation Heritage Centre, ☎ +61 8 8947 2145, [14]. The Aviation Heritage Centre has an impressive collection of aircraft and displays depicting the Territory’s involvement in aviation from the early pioneers to the jet age. The prize exhibit is a B-52 bomber on permanent loan from the United States Air Force, one of only two on public display outside the US. The centre is 8 km from Darwin city and is on the site of fierce air combat that took place overhead during World War II.
Bicentennial Park. This scenic stretch of parkland along The Esplanade overlooks Darwin Harbour. It’s a great place to kick a footy, soak up some rays or have a picnic while watching the sun set.
George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens, (Geranium St off the Stuart Hwy), 7AM-7PM. A stone’s throw from the city centre are 42 hectares of gardens that showcase local flora and that of other tropical habitats around the world. Explore monsoon forests, coastal foredunes and open woodlands on a stroll through the botanic gardens. Free.

While in Darwin make sure you visit museum and it's fascinating Cyclone Tracey exhibition (Darwin was demolished by a cyclone in 1974) , catch a movie at the open air deck chair cinema, feed the fish at aquascene, have a feed at the wharf precinct and check out one of the many fantastic markets.
Darwin has a unique population mix with 75% of people aged under 25 years. It is also very multicultural, having over fifty different nationalities living harmoniously together. To capture the face of darwin, I interviewed Bow Chooiam a 17 year old first generation Thai girl who I met working at her parents stall at the Parap markets. Click on the pic to the left to hear her story.
Between Darwin and Kakadon't is the Point Stuart Wilderness Lodge Catch a barramundi, take a cruise and see a croc in the Mary River, watch a great Aborigine culture show, or just take it easy. Well worth checking out
100 kms east of Katherine, Manyallaluk is an Aboriginal owned and operated tourism business. Visitors can do tours where they learn various aspects of Aboriginal Culture. The emphasis is on having fun and getting involved in the activities.
The first thing that I noticed about Manyallaluk is how happy everyone is who is lives out there.The guides love their work and really enjoy passing on their bush knowledge to the 'white fellas'.
A true cultural experience and one I advise every visitor to Australia, and every Aussie, should experience. A beautiful gem of a place

Mataranka has some great natural springs where you can swim safely without becoming a crocodiles dinner. We stayed at the Territory Manor where they feed tame leaping barramundi twice a day.
Out here in the outback, pubs and petrol stops are the hub of the universe. It is not unusual to travel 300 km between fuel stations. Renner Springs is one such stop, slap bang in the middle of nowhere. It is sustained by a natural spring. All fruit, vegetables and meat come from Adelaide 2,206 km south and petrol supplies are freighted 836 km from Darwin. I interviewed Jasmine, a bar maid at Renner for the last two years. What sort of woman lives in such an isolated location?
Thirty minutes drive from Mt. Isa, West Leichardt station is a 310,000 acre cattle station. Up here there are two seasons, the dry and the wet. Currently it is the end of the dry season, a time of maintenance and repair. It's also a time of waiting...waiting for the first rains to hit. The land is harsh and dry, having gone up to 40 weeks without rain. I interviewed station owner Ron Croft about life in the outback.
Ron has his dams stocked with a variety of fish including Barramundi and Sooty Grunter. We had a go with the rods and caught two Sooty Grunters with the first two casts.
Karumba on the Gulf of Carpentaria, is renown for it's great sport fishing. It is currently the build up to the wet season with temperatures soar above 40 degrees, with humidity around 75%. You really have to be here to understand how draining this sort of climate can be. People tend to get a bit stir crazy this time of year, waiting for the first rains of the wet to fall. And when the wet does hit, Karumba can be cut off from the rest of the world for up to 12 weeks due to flood waters cutting road access. During these times food drops are made by helicopter for stranded Karumba residents
Local police officer Jason Jesse is a keen fisherman who took us out on his boat to catch some barramundi, Australia's premier native sports fish.
The Undara lava tubes were formed one hundred and ninety thousand years ago when a volcanic eruption spewed lava along creeks and riverbeds to form the lava tubes left today.
I interviewed Savannah Guide Val Speedie. Savannah guides is a network of professional tour guides with an in-depth collective knowledge of the natural and cultural assets of the tropical savannahs of northern Australia. Val has been a guide at Undara for the last ten years and has a vast knowledge of the area. Click on pic to the left to see her video.
We tried doing some night driving to beat the intense day time heat. Not a good idea in the outback, the roads were thick with kamakazi kangaroos and roaming cattle. During a 150 km journey the carnage toll was three kangaroos and one unidentified flying bird. Without a roo bar we would have been in for some serious damage to the car. In the end we only lost a headlight.
Only one hours drive from Cairns, the tablelands feature some magnificant waterfalls, crater lakes and rainforest. We also dropped into the Crystal Caves at Atherton which feature a great collection of crystals and fossils from around the world.
