Steve Lewis at the Upstage singing Chantys
Byron One (by H Robertson) This isn't a showcase performance by any stretch but it always brings a smile to my face for the entire viewing, so I've uploaded it anyway. The mostly inaudible stage banter and exchanges of smiles at the beginning of this impromptu recording is partly due my advice to Lloyd as we arrived at the venue, which was it is not a great idea to argue about anything while in front of an audience. Of course then I become slightly concerned when Lloyd suggests we had the capo on the 6th fret when we gave the song a brief practice earlier. I'm almost certain is was the 5th fret and I won't be able to sing the harmony if it's half a tone higher . . . and so I mention this . . . but can't take it any further and the capo stays on the 6th fret for this performance . . . ...
this is a great song about when the whaling fleet used to tie up for the winter in lieth harbour, falklands ?
Cover of Nic Jones' arrangement of this song, originally by Harry Robertson. Nic covered this on 'Penguin Eggs'. I think the original is still available too online somewhere. Played in Open Bb tuning.
Lyrics Below:-written by Harry Robertson: 1923-1995 Born Scotland and Died Brisbane. Apprenticed to Rolls Royce and joined Navy 1941. Left Navy 1947 and Joined Norwegian Whaling fleets in the Antarctic Ok,Ok...the picture doesn't match the period of the song(sailing ships-no engines) but you'll be singing along with the words below anyway....and the chorus is great for communal harmonies!....as usual...I lose it right at the end but just couldn't do it again..I'd already had several goes. The ultimate performance is the Nic Jones Version..superb chorus 1) Where'er the winter blizzards blow And the whaling fleet's at rest Tucked in Leith Harbour's sheltered bay, Safely anchored ten abreast See the whale men at their stations, as from ship to ship they rove, Carrying sacks of coal ...

Music: Gwr A'i FarchMan and His Horse I was born into a British working-class family in Scarborough, Yorkshire. I have an elder brother and sister. We were brought up in what is now called a single-parent family. Our mother was a waitress. When she died, we kids went off in different directions. Not choice, it just happened. After something of a chaotic period I ended up with foster parents living in Darwen, Lancashire, aged eleven. They took me with them when they moved to Manchester. At the age of twelve I was offered an interview for a place in the Manchester High School of Art, a specialist junior art school in the normal secondary system. A place had become available because a pupil had climbed into the building next door for a bet with his mates. It was Strangeways Prison. So he wa...
