British industrial designer Benjamin Hubert is going to let you in on a little design secret. In the game of free pitching (a game that designers are expected to play, where they give up their time and ideas for free in the hopes of winning a commission) he used approximately 4554 hours of his and his studio’s (which from 2010 to 2015 was called Benjamin Hubert Ltd) time. After a bit of reflection and a deep look into what this time was amounting to, Hubert rebranded his studio Layer – making the focus less about his signature design style and more about how they could create lasting and significant impact.
Here’s a journey through numbers to illustrate Hubert’s path:
In 2006 Hubert graduates as 1 of 150 from Loughborough University. He joins a large design studio as 1 of 120 employees and later moves to London to work at Seymour Powell as 1 of 90. In 2010 he switches to work at design studio Tangerine as 1 of only 15. After an enlightening visit to Milan furniture fair in 2010, Hubert founds his own studio – Benjamin Hubert Ltd – as 1 of 1.
1040 designers applied to work with him, of which he employed 3. Over the 5 years, 3758 interns applied and 30 spent time with the studio. 5 were given permanent positions. Approximately 11385 man-hours of work are put into the studio over 5 years, and a staggering 40 per cent of that was used for “concept pitches”, better known as free pitching.
4554 hours were spent on free pitches over 5 years
128 concepts were created per year
62 were taken to prototype
52 were launched at furniture fairs
48 then made it to being launched on the market

In 2015, Hubert began to think seriously about how that time could be spent in a better, more relevant way.
As industrial designers we have a responsibility to solve problems. We solved the problem of sitting a long time ago. Why are we trying to solve that problem anymore? It’s not just the question of why another chair? How can we use that time better?
If those 449 hours per year (approximately 44 days) were used to give back instead of to compete in the free pitching game, then the studio could work on design that was really a powerful tool for change.
Hubert relaunched his studio in September 2015 under the name Layer. A new name, a new direction, and a new model for how to use their time more effectively.
Hubert illustrates the work that Layer is carrying out with a few examples of their most recent socially driven design. A redesign of the vessel for giving change for Maggie’s Cancer Charity, which now bows in show of humility and gratitude; a modular structure that can be used to divide space; and a wearable that measures your impact on the wellbeing of the world.

Hubert H. Harrison (1883-1927) is one of the truly important figures of twentieth-century history. A brilliant writer, orator, educator, critic, and political activist, he was described by Joel A. Rogers, in "World's Great Men of Color" as "the foremost Afro-American intellect of his time." Labor and civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph described Harrison as "the father of Harlem Radicalism."
Harrison served as the foremost Black organizer, agitator, and theoretician in the Socialist Party of New York during its 1912 heyday; he founded the first organization (the Liberty League) and the first newspaper ("The Voice") of the militant, World War I-era "New Negro" movement; edited "The New Negro: A Monthly Magazine of a Different Sort" ("intended as an organ of the international consciousness of the darker races -- especially of the Negro race") in 1919; wrote "When Africa Awakes: The 'Inside Story' of the Stirrings and Strivings of the New Negro in the Western World" in 1920; and he served as editor of the "Negro World" and principal radical influence on the Garvey movement during its radical high point in 1920. His views on race and class profoundly influenced a generation of "New Negro" militants and common people including the class radical A. Philip Randolph and the race radical Marcus Garvey. Considered more race conscious than Randolph and more class conscious than Garvey, Harrison is the key link in the ideological unity of the two great trends of the Black Liberation Movement -- the labor and civil rights trend associated with Martin Luther King, Jr., and the race and nationalist trend associated with Malcolm X. (Randolph and Garvey were, respectively, the direct links to King marching on Washington, with Randolph at his side, and to Malcolm (whose father was a Garveyite preacher and whose mother wrote for the Negro World), speaking militantly and proudly on street corners in Harlem.
Harrison was also an immensely skilled and popular orator and educator; a highly praised journalist, critic, and book reviewer; a pioneer Black activist in the freethought and birth control movements; and a bibliophile and library builder and popularizer who helped develop the 135th Street Public Library into what is now the internationally famous Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Note: The presentation and Question and Answer period lasted over 2 hours. The TV station edited it down. There was much more presentation and discussion. The crowd was remarkable since the event was at the highpoint of the winter's big snowstorm, the governor was telling people to stay off the roads, and the public library closed early (only leaving a door open to the auditorium where this event was held). Those who made it to the event were determined and this was manifested in their interest during the presentation, the lengthy Q and A period, and much informal discussion that went on into the evening.

Hubert Work
Hubert Work (July 3, 1860 – December 14, 1942) was a U.S. administrator and physician. He served as the U.S. Postmaster General between from 1922 until 1923 during the presidency of Warren G. Harding. He served as the U.S. Secretary of the Interior from 1923 until 1928, during the administration of President Calvin Coolidge.
Early life and career
Work was born in Marion Center, Pennsylvania, to Tabitha Van Horn and Moses Thompson Work. He attended medical school at the University of Michigan from 1882 to 1883 and received an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1885. He settled in Colorado and founded Woodcroft Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado, in 1896.
Work was active in the Republican Party and served as the Colorado state chairman in 1912. In 1914, Work ran unsuccessfully in a special election for the United States Senate. He was defeated by Democrat Charles S. Thomas, later the Governor of Colorado.
Work received 98,728 votes (39 percent) compared to Thomas' 102,037 ballots (40.3 percent). This was the Colorado's first Senate election by popular vote under the Seventeenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. During World War I, Work served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Benjamin F. Hubert
Benjamin Franklin Hubert (December 25, 1884 – April 29, 1958) served as president of Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth and Georgia State College from 1926 until 1947.
Biography
President
Hubert succeeded Cyrus G. Wiley as president of the college in 1926. Hubert came to the college from Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. Under his leadership the college became a full-time degree-granting institution as the high school and normal programs were disestablished. The school also became a full member institution of the University System of Georgia in 1932 and the name was changed to Georgia State College that same year.
Legacy
The Benjamin F. Hubert Technical Science Center on the university's campus houses the school's chemistry, computer science, and engineering departments and classrooms.

Hubert Harrison
Hubert Henry Harrison (April 27, 1883 – December 17, 1927) was a West Indian-American writer, orator, educator, critic, and radical socialist, and Single-Tax political activist based in Harlem, New York. He was described by activist A. Philip Randolph as “the father of Harlem radicalism” and by the historian Joel Augustus Rogers as “the foremost Afro-American intellect of his time.” John G. Jackson of American Atheists described him as "The Black Socrates".
An immigrant from St. Croix at the age of 17, Harrison played significant roles in the largest radical class and race movements in the United States. In 1912-14 he was the leading Black organizer in the Socialist Party of America. In 1917 he founded the Liberty League and The Voice, the first organization and the first newspaper of the race-conscious “New Negro” movement. From his Liberty League and Voice came the core leadership of individuals and race-conscious program of the Garvey movement.
Harrison was a seminal and influential thinker who encouraged the development of class consciousness among working people, positive race consciousness among Black people, agnostic atheism, secular humanism, social progressivism, and freethought. He was also a self-described "radical internationalist" and contributed significantly to the Caribbean radical tradition. Harrison profoundly influenced a generation of “New Negro” militants, including A. Philip Randolph, Chandler Owen, Marcus Garvey, Richard Benjamin Moore, W. A. Domingo, Williana Burroughs, and Cyril Briggs.

Hubert Parry
Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, 1st Baronet (27 February 1848 – 7 October 1918) was an English composer, teacher and historian of music.
Parry's first major works appeared in 1880. As a composer he is best known for the choral song "Jerusalem", the coronation anthem "I was glad", the choral and orchestral ode Blest Pair of Sirens, and the hymn tune "Repton", which sets the words "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind". His orchestral works include five symphonies and a set of Symphonic Variations.
After early attempts to work in insurance, at his father's behest, Parry was taken up by George Grove, first as a contributor to Grove's massive Dictionary of Music and Musicians in the 1870s and 80s, and then in 1883 as professor of composition and musical history at the Royal College of Music, of which Grove was the first head. In 1895 Parry succeeded Grove as head of the College, remaining in the post for the rest of his life. He was concurrently Heather Professor of Music at the University of Oxford from 1900 to 1908. He wrote several books about music and music history, the best-known of which is probably his 1909 study of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Approximately 11385 man-hours of work are put into the studio over 5 years, and a staggering 40 per cent of that was used for “concept pitches”, better known as free pitching.

As industrial designers we have a responsibility to solve problems. We solved the problem of sitting a long time ago. Why are we trying to solve that problem anymore? It’s not just the question of why another chair? How can we use that time better?
If those 449 hours per year (approximately 44 days) were used to give back instead of to compete in the free pitching game, then the studio could work on design that was really a powerful tool for change.
Hubert relaunched his studio in September 2015 under the name Layer. A new name, a new direction, and a new model for how to use their time more effectively.
Hubert illustrates the work that Layer is carrying out with a few examples of their most recent socially driven design. A redesign of the vessel for giving change for Maggie’s Cancer Charity, which now bows in show of humility and gratitude; a modular structure that can be used to divide space; and a wearable that measures your impact on the wellbeing of the world.

Dudley Public Library, Roxbury, Mass., February 15, 2014
Hubert H. Harrison (1883-1927) is one of the truly important figures of twentieth-century history. A brilliant writer, orator, educator, critic, and political activist, he was described by Joel A. Rogers, in "World's Great Men of Color" as "the foremost Afro-American intellect of his time." Labor and civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph described Harrison as "the father of Harlem Radicalism."
Harrison served as the foremost Black organizer, agitator, and theoretician in the Socialist Party of New York during its 1912 heyday; he founded the first organization (the Liberty League) and the first newspaper ("The Voice") of the militant, World War I-era "New Negro" movement; edited "The New Negro: A Monthly Magazine of a Different Sort" ("intended as an organ of the international consciousness of the darker races -- especially of the Negro race") in 1919; wrote "When Africa Awakes: The 'Inside Story' of the Stirrings and Strivings of the New Negro in the Western World" in 1920; and he served as editor of the "Negro World" and principal radical influence on the Garvey movement during its radical high point in 1920. His views on race and class profoundly influenced a generation of "New Negro" militants and common people including the class radical A. Philip Randolph and the race radical Marcus Garvey. Considered more race conscious than Randolph and more class conscious than Garvey, Harrison is the key link in the ideological unity of the two great trends of the Black Liberation Movement -- the labor and civil rights trend associated with Martin Luther King, Jr., and the race and nationalist trend associated with Malcolm X. (Randolph and Garvey were, respectively, the direct links to King marching on Washington, with Randolph at his side, and to Malcolm (whose father was a Garveyite preacher and whose mother wrote for the Negro World), speaking militantly and proudly on street corners in Harlem.
Harrison was also an immensely skilled and popular orator and educator; a highly praised journalist, critic, and book reviewer; a pioneer Black activist in the freethought and birth control movements; and a bibliophile and library builder and popularizer who helped develop the 135th Street Public Library into what is now the internationally famous Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Note: The presentation and Question and Answer period lasted over 2 hours. The TV station edited it down. There was much more presentation and discussion. The crowd was remarkable since the event was at the highpoint of the winter's big snowstorm, the governor was telling people to stay off the roads, and the public library closed early (only leaving a door open to the auditorium where this event was held). Those who made it to the event were determined and this was manifested in their interest during the presentation, the lengthy Q and A period, and much informal discussion that went on into the evening.

Valentine also edits Wormwood, a journal dedicated to fantastic, supernatural and decadent literature, and has also edited anthologies.
