We interviewed Gordon Jackson (1923-1990) in December 1983. During his career he appeared in over 60 films, but it was later in his life that he was best known for his work on TV in Up Stairs Down Stairs and the Professionals.
Here, he's talking with Donal Quigley about that career in the TV Studio at Imperial College London.

The Fraggle Rock crew will re-emerge in a live-action movie to be produced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The musical puppet characters created by Jim Henson will come alive once more, and the Snowden actor will also feature alongside the muppets. The 1983 series had been planned for the big screen for almost ten years, it just took Gordon-Levitt to come along and boost the momentum. Chatting to Variety, the man who’s come a long way since 10 Things I Hate About You, said the Henson creations are the first screen personas he’s ever loved. First on Sesame Street and then on Fraggle Rock. He is collaborating with lisa Henson, Jim’s eldest child and CEO of The Jim Henson Company and New Regency.

Shirley Bassey recorded and released this song on her 1970 album titled, 'Shirley Bassey - Something'. This LP, which includes 'Light My Fire, went to #5 in the UK Charts, #23 in the Netherlands, and #29 in the USA.
Light My Fire Remix is a single released by Shirley Bassey in 1999. This is a remix of the vocal recorded in 1970 for the album Something, which is also included on this release. The single was issued by Blue Note, EMI Music France in two formats a 12" single and a CD single.
ABOUT the song, 'Light My Fire':
"Light My Fire" is a song originally performed by The Doors which was recorded in August 1966 and released the first week of January 1967 on the Doors' debut album. Released as a single in April, it spent three weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and one week on the Cash Box Top 100. It re-entered the Billboard Hot 100 in 1968 following the success of Jose Feliciano's version of the song, peaking at number 87. The song was largely written by Robby Krieger, and credited to the entire band. The single was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1967, representing sales of one million units.
"Light My Fire" also achieved modest success in Australia, where it peaked at #22 on the ARIA chart. The single originally reached #49 in the UK in 1967, but experienced belated success in that country in 1991 when a re-issue peaked at #7. The re-issue occurred on the back of revived interest in the band following Oliver Stone's film biopic "The Doors". The song is #35 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

ABOUT I Am What I Am, The song:
"I Am What I Am" is a song originally featured on the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical La Cage aux Folles (1983--1987). The song is found on the finale number of the play's first act, and performed by the character of Albin Mougeotte, first played by George Hearn. The song was composed in 1983 by Jerry Herman, an openly gay man.

ICONIC SINATRA, REPLAY, L.A. ROCK, AND THE INDESTRUCTIBLE CANDY
Ervin Drake wrote the song “It Was A Very Good Year” for the Kingston Trio as filler on one of their folk albums. Frank Sinatra heard the song on the radio, got together with Gordon Jenkins and together they created one of the classics of the 20th Century. Tony Verna was the cameraman who invented instant replay. The technique was first used in the 1963 Army-Navy Game and featured a touchdown by Army quarterback Rollie Stichweh. Kim Fowley was a rock-and-roll legend, who produced many of the top performers of the genre. Melvin Gordon was the chief executive officer of the Tootsie roll Company.
Ervin Maurice Druckman (April 3, 1919 – January 15, 2015), better known as Ervin Drake, was an American songwriter whose works include such American Songbook standards as "I Believe" and "It Was a Very Good Year". He wrote in a variety of styles and his work has been recorded by musicians around the world. In 1983, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Born in New York City, New York,[2] Ervin Drake had his first song published at age 12, in 1931. The son of Max Druckman and Pearl Cohen, he attended Townsend Harris High School in the borough of The Bronx, New York, graduating in 1935, and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science from the City College of New York in 1940.[2] His elder brother, Milton, also became a songwriter, with work including "The Java Jive" and "Nina Never Knew"; and his younger brother Arnold Drake, become a writer for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and others, as well as an author and playwright.[3]
Drake provided lyrics for "Perdido", composed by trombonist Juan Tizol, a member of Duke Ellington's orchestra, and first recorded (by Ellington) in 1944. Besides composing music and lyrics for dozens of pieces he was also a television producer and worked with performers including Jackie Gleason and Milton Berle. Among his best known songs is "I Believe", the first hit song ever introduced on television, which was commissioned and introduced by Jane Froman on her television show in 1953, and became a number-one hit for Frankie Laine, holding the record for number of non-consecutive weeks spent at number one. It has also been recorded by many other artists including Barbra Streisand and Elvis Presley.
He wrote the words and music for "It Was a Very Good Year" in 1961, when a publisher friend told him that Bob Shane of the folk music group the Kingston Trio would be in the publisher's office the next morning, and the publisher asked Drake to write a song for Shane to sing solo.[4] Shane recorded it for the album Goin' Places and other folk performers covered it.[3] In a 2009 interview, Drake said that in 1965, Frank Sinatra had heard the song on his car radio, and recorded it for the melancholy and introspective album September of My Years.[3] The Sinatra recording hit the top ten on the charts for 1966. The piece has been recorded in over 10 languages and more than 50 artists.[citation needed] As lyricist, Drake, with composer Irene Higginbotham, wrote the jazz standard "Good Morning Heartache". It has been recorded by over 100 artists, including Billie Holiday and later Diana Ross when she portrayed Holiday in the movie Lady Sings the Blues

Those who believe in conspiracies have a pretty strong point here. Inventor Paul Pantone was jailed after making this video. Paul developed a small engine that runs on 80% water plus a variety of other things (and yes, it works). - Paul was offered money from some big oil groups for his patent. Paul’s stipulation was that the invention be used to help man. - Each time the prospective buyers turned him down. Allegedly Paul was taken to court and it was argued that he was insane for turning down an offer for such a large sum of money. - Paul was thinking principles, over profit. Paul was eventually placed in a mental hospital and was pressured, and tortured to try and force him to sign over his patent. - Paul Pantone knew that he would never be able to market his invention so he put together some do it yourself plans to modify your own engines. This is BBC News coverage of the death of the Coronation Street actreess Betty Driver.
Betty first appeared in Coronation Street on 2 June 1969 and played Betty Turpin (later Williams) for 42 years, appearing in more than 2,800 episodes. She was made an MBE in 2000.
Before Coronation Street, Betty was a big band singer and variety star. In 1964 she auditioned for the part of Hilda Ogden (which later went to Jean Alexander). She also appeared in the Coronation Street spin-off Pardon the Expression starring Arthur Lowe as Leonard Swindley. It was during this series that Betty suffered a back problem forcing her to retire, that is until 1969 when she was offered the role of Betty Turpin.
The character of Betty Turpin/Williams was well known for being a barmaid of the Rovers Return and for being oldest barmaid in Weatherfield and of course for her hotpots. She was involved in many comic moments such as the car in the lake with Bet Lynch and Fred Gee in 1983 but also some serious moments with the story of Gordon Clegg being her illegitimate son in 1974.
Nonetheless she is perhaps one of the best loved characters to ever walk the famous Coronation Street cobbles.
RIP darling Betty, you will be sadly missed!

ROCK, AND THE INDESTRUCTIBLE CANDY Ervin Drake wrote the song “It Was A Very Good Year” for the Kingston Trio as filler on one of their folk albums. Frank Sinatra heard the song on the radio, got together with Gordon Jenkins and together they created one of the classics of the 20th Century. Tony Verna was the cameraman who invented instant replay. The technique was first used in the 1963 Army-Navy Game and featured a touchdown by Army quarterback Rollie Stichweh. Kim Fowley was a rock-and-roll legend, who produced many of the top performers of the genre. Melvin Gordon was the chief executive officer of the Tootsie roll Company. Ervin Maurice Druckman (April 3, 1919 – January 15, 2015), better known as Ervin Drake, was an American songwriter whose works include such American Songbook standards as "I Believe" and "It Was a Very Good Year". He wrote in a variety of styles and his work has been recorded by musicians around the world. In 1983, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Born in New York City, New York,[2] Ervin Drake had his first song published at age 12, in 1931. The son of Max Druckman and Pearl Cohen, he attended Townsend Harris High School in the borough of The Bronx, New York, graduating in 1935, and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science from the City College of New York in 1940.[2] His elder brother, Milton, also became a songwriter, with work including "The Java Jive" and "Nina Never Knew"; and his younger brother Arnold Drake, become a writer for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and others, as well as an author and playwright.[3] Drake provided lyrics for "Perdido", composed by trombonist Juan Tizol, a member of Duke Ellington's orchestra, and first recorded (by Ellington) in 1944. Besides composing music and lyrics for dozens of pieces he was also a television producer and worked with performers including Jackie Gleason and Milton Berle. Among his best known songs is "I Believe", the first hit song ever introduced on television, which was commissioned and introduced by Jane Froman on her television show in 1953, and became a number-one hit for Frankie Laine, holding the record for number of non-consecutive weeks spent at number one. It has also been recorded by many other artists including Barbra Streisand and Elvis Presley. He wrote the words and music for "It Was a Very Good Year" in 1961, when a publisher friend told him that Bob Shane of the folk music group the Kingston Trio would be in the publisher's office the next morning, and the publisher asked Drake to write a song for Shane to sing solo.[4] Shane recorded it for the album Goin' Places and other folk performers covered it.[3] In a 2009 interview, Drake said that in 1965, Frank Sinatra had heard the song on his car radio, and recorded it for the melancholy and introspective album September of My Years.[3] The Sinatra recording hit the top ten on the charts for 1966. Date: 15 October 2011 This is BBC News coverage of the death of the Coronation Street actreess Betty Driver. Betty first appeared in Coronation Street on 2 June 1969 and played Betty Turpin (later Williams) for 42 years, appearing in more than 2,800 episodes. She was made an MBE in 2000. Before Coronation Street, Betty was a big band singer and variety star. In 1964 she auditioned for the part of Hilda Ogden (which later went to Jean Alexander). She also appeared in the Coronation Street spin-off Pardon the Expression starring Arthur Lowe as Leonard Swindley. It was during this series that Betty suffered a back problem forcing her to retire, that is until 1969 when she was offered the role of Betty Turpin. The character of Betty Turpin/Williams was well known for being a barmaid of the Rovers Return and for being oldest barmaid in Weatherfield and of course for her hotpots. She was involved in many comic moments such as the car in the lake with Bet Lynch and Fred Gee in 1983 but also some serious moments with the story of Gordon Clegg being her illegitimate son in 1974. Nonetheless she is perhaps one of the best loved characters to ever walk the famous Coronation Street cobbles. RIP darling Betty, you will be sadly missed! -

Frank Sinatra heard the song on the radio, got together with Gordon Jenkins and together they created one of the classics of the 20th Century. Tony Verna was the cameraman who invented instant replay. The technique was first used in the 1963 Army-Navy Game and featured a touchdown by Army quarterback Rollie Stichweh. Kim Fowley was a rock-and-roll legend, who produced many of the top performers of the genre. Melvin Gordon was the chief executive officer of the Tootsie roll Company.
Ervin Maurice Druckman (April 3, 1919 – January 15, 2015), better known as Ervin Drake, was an American songwriter whose works include such American Songbook standards as "I Believe" and "It Was a Very Good Year". He wrote in a variety of styles and his work has been recorded by musicians around the world. In 1983, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Born in New York City, New York,[2] Ervin Drake had his first song published at age 12, in 1931. The son of Max Druckman and Pearl Cohen, he attended Townsend Harris High School in the borough of The Bronx, New York, graduating in 1935, and went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science from the City College of New York in 1940.[2] His elder brother, Milton, also became a songwriter, with work including "The Java Jive" and "Nina Never Knew"; and his younger brother Arnold Drake, become a writer for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and others, as well as an author and playwright.[3]
Drake provided lyrics for "Perdido", composed by trombonist Juan Tizol, a member of Duke Ellington's orchestra, and first recorded (by Ellington) in 1944. Besides composing music and lyrics for dozens of pieces he was also a television producer and worked with performers including Jackie Gleason and Milton Berle. Among his best known songs is "I Believe", the first hit song ever introduced on television, which was commissioned and introduced by Jane Froman on her television show in 1953, and became a number-one hit for Frankie Laine, holding the record for number of non-consecutive weeks spent at number one. It has also been recorded by many other artists including Barbra Streisand and Elvis Presley.
He wrote the words and music for "It Was a Very Good Year" in 1961, when a publisher friend told him that Bob Shane of the folk music group the Kingston Trio would be in the publisher's office the next morning, and the publisher asked Drake to write a song for Shane to sing solo.[4] Shane recorded it for the album Goin' Places and other folk performers covered it.[3] In a 2009 interview, Drake said that in 1965, Frank Sinatra had heard the song on his car radio, and recorded it for the melancholy and introspective album September of My Years.[3] The Sinatra recording hit the top ten on the charts for 1966. The piece has been recorded in over 10 languages and more than 50 artists.[citation needed] As lyricist, Drake, with composer Irene Higginbotham, wrote the jazz standard "Good Morning Heartache". Among his best known songs is "I Believe", the first hit song ever introduced on television, which was commissioned and introduced by Jane Froman on her television show in 1953, and became a number-one hit for Frankie Laine, holding the record for number of non-consecutive weeks spent at number one. It has also been recorded by many other artists including Barbra Streisand and Elvis Presley.
He wrote the words and music for "It Was a Very Good Year" in 1961, when a publisher friend told him that Bob Shane of the folk music group the Kingston Trio would be in the publisher's office the next morning, and the publisher asked Drake to write a song for Shane to sing solo.[4] Shane recorded it for the album Goin' Places and other folk performers covered it.[3] In a 2009 interview, Drake said that in 1965, Frank Sinatra had heard the song on his car radio, and recorded it for the melancholy and introspective album September of My Years.[3] The Sinatra recording hit the top ten on the charts for 1966. The piece has been recorded in over 10 languages and more than 50 artists.[citation needed] As lyricist, Drake, with composer Irene Higginbotham, wrote the jazz standard "Good Morning Heartache". It has been recorded by over 100 artists, including Billie Holiday and later Diana Ross when she portrayed Holiday in the movie Lady Sings the Blues

Those who believe in conspiracies have a pretty strong point here. Inventor Paul Pantone was jailed after making this video. Paul developed a small engine that runs on 80% water plus a variety of other things (and yes, it works). - Paul was offered money from some big oil groups for his patent. Paul’s stipulation was that the invention be used to help man. - Each time the prospective buyers turned him down. Allegedly Paul was taken to court and it was argued that he was insane for turning down an offer for such a large sum of money. - Paul was thinking principles, over profit. Paul was eventually placed in a mental hospital and was pressured, and tortured to try and force him to sign over his patent. - Paul Pantone knew that he would never be able to market his invention so he put together some do it yourself plans to modify your own engines. This is BBC News coverage of the death of the Coronation Street actreess Betty Driver.
Betty first appeared in Coronation Street on 2 June 1969 and played Betty Turpin (later Williams) for 42 years, appearing in more than 2,800 episodes. She was made an MBE in 2000.
Before Coronation Street, Betty was a big band singer and variety star. In 1964 she auditioned for the part of Hilda Ogden (which later went to Jean Alexander). She also appeared in the Coronation Street spin-off Pardon the Expression starring Arthur Lowe as Leonard Swindley. It was during this series that Betty suffered a back problem forcing her to retire, that is until 1969 when she was offered the role of Betty Turpin.
The character of Betty Turpin/Williams was well known for being a barmaid of the Rovers Return and for being oldest barmaid in Weatherfield and of course for her hotpots. She was involved in many comic moments such as the car in the lake with Bet Lynch and Fred Gee in 1983 but also some serious moments with the story of Gordon Clegg being her illegitimate son in 1974.
Nonetheless she is perhaps one of the best loved characters to ever walk the famous Coronation Street cobbles.
RIP darling Betty, you will be sadly missed!

Guest Panelists
Alex Anagnostou holds two degrees from the University of Toronto 1988 (B.A. Fine Arts Management) and the University of Western Ontario (B. Ed Visual Arts) in 1994 and graduated with a silver medal from the Sheridan College Glass Program in 2004. She is an artist in residence at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga where she sculpts cast and blown glass. Alex`s sculptures has been shown at Collect 2008 (Victoria and Albert Museum, U.K.), SOFA Chicago, the Canadian Pavillion at the Cheongjiu International Craft Biennale and the Vancouver Museum during the Olympics. Alex completed her first public art project at the Royal Botanical Gardens in 2010, was shortlisted for the Edmonton Airport Public Art project, and she is in the process of working on a Mississauga public art project scheduled for completion in 2012.
Cameron Cartiere is the Dean of Graduate Studies at Emily Carr University of Art & Design. Prior to arriving in Canada in 2010, she was the co-founder of the Centre for Media, Culture and Creative Practice at Birkbeck, University of London and a senior lecturer for the Arts Policy and Management MA program at Birkbeck. She is a writer and researcher specializing in public art, urban renewal, sculpture parks, and curatorial practice. She is the author of RE/Placing Public Art (VDM Verlag, 2010), co-editor of The Practice of Public Art (Routledge, 2008), co-author of the Manifesto of Possibilities: Commissioning Public Art in the Urban Environment and author of the online resource, The International Directory of Sculpture Parks & Gardens.
Gordon Hatt (BA 1983, MA 1985, Art History, University of Toronto) arrived at CAFKA after working as Curator of Zone A for Nuit Blanche in Toronto, October 4, 2008. He was Director/Curator at Rodman Hall Arts Centre in St. Catharines from 2004 to 2007 and from 1988 to 2004 he worked in a variety of capacities at Cambridge Galleries, the last seven of those years as curator of temporary exhibitions. At Cambridge, he developed a programming philosophy of audience development through the presentation of advanced contemporary art and he brought this philosophy to CAFKA. Gordon has been active in the development and the promotion of Canadian artists for over 20 years, following the work of young artists and developing a public context for their work. He has written numerous articles, essays and interviews charting the progress of a generation. Gordon Hatt has acted as Executive Director since 2008.
David Premi has more than 25 years of architectural practice experience. david premi Architects inc (dp.Ai) was established in Hamilton in 2005 as an architectural practice focusing on sustainability with a strong focus on design of public renewal projects. David is a principal of Rethink Renewal, offering a broad range of cross disciplinary services including design, planning, and research. With partner Paul Shaker, he writes a monthly column in the Hamilton Spectator focusing on Urban renewal issues. David is actively involved in the arts community, acting as a juror for public art installations, serving as Chair of the Board of Directors for the Hamilton Arts Council, where he recently led the establishment of a "Civic Arts" subcommittee dealing with public art and architecture. In collaboration with Dr. David Harris Smith of McMaster University's "Empathic Media Lab", David is currently developing a large scale, mixed reality, interactive, public art installation to be displayed at 2012 Supercrawl.
