Around 60 Thai traffic police officers were being trained by doctors on how to safely deliver babies on Friday (June 12) in case of an emergency in the rush hours of Bangkok's congested streets.
A video shot by a traffic policeman, just a week ago, showing a pregnant woman giving birth in a taxi is the latest emergency case on the streets of Bangkok.
The special training session for the traffic police officers is organized by the Bangkok hospital.
The project aims to educated traffic policemen on the basic knowledge to assist a pregnant woman to give birth in a safe and hygiene environment, as the incidents are appearing more frequent in the capital city.
Police estimated that there are around 20 of such cases in a year.
The training is also providing more confidence for participants to perform their job.
"The training helps me boost up my confidence in doing this job. If I have to perform the duty before the training, I will be too excited. I even feel excited in this exercise, the real situation will be even more," said 20 year-old Police Lance Corporal Patcharapon Chamni.
They are trained to deliver baby only when the passenger cannot make it to a hospital. They are required to perform basic assistance such as supporting the baby's head, sucking out fluid from baby's nose and mouth and warm them with blanket before facilitating them to the nearest hospital.
The project has been launched since 1997 and have saved more than a hundred people.
"We cannot avoid this kind of situation because of the Bangkok traffic. We all face it. When the traffic is very congested, we cannot move at all or move at a very slow speed; therefore, a pregnant woman will get this service. Since we have started this project, we have rescued more than 120 mothers," said Dr. Paisal Chantarapitak.
According to Department of Land Transport, there are 8,651,172 vehicles registered in Bangkok, in December 2014.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo five automatic traffic police are in operation. The large aluminium figures are able to rotate at the waist, and contain closed circuit television cameras to allow them to record offenders, for later apprehension or imposition of fines. The system runs on solar power, from panels on the roof of the structure within which the robot stands. The robot controls the traffic with red and green lights in its hands, and the use of articulated arms. The robots can also speak to pedestrians and help them safely cross the road.

kidding, this video and the action captured by one of the undercover
officers is the stuff movie makers can only dream of.It starts
off with the pre-bust briefing and then its on to the action. First up
is the botched bust with cops shooting at the car as it makes a getaway,
then comes the high speed chase with more gun fire followed by a
dramatic crash, rounding off with the frantic search for the drug
dealers. Despite the poor quality of the video it is non-stop entertainment and worth watching to the end.

It isn’t a secret that Thailand’s roads are dangerous to drive on. I want to help my viewers to avoid becoming a traffic statistic in Thailand. According to the World Health Organization Thailand, in 2010, had 38.1 road fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants per year and had 92.4 road fatalities per 100,000 motor vehicles per year which was the equivalent of 26,312 in 2010.
Deaths/100,000/year (an international standard for comparisons) and total actual number of deaths in Thailand, due to traffic accidents, (possibly contrary to intuition), have been declining since 2003. A prominent rather unexplained drop occurred between 2009 and 2010.
When looking at the vehicles involved in traffic accidents in Thailand, the figures indicate that the majority of accidents involve motorcycles, personal cars, pickups, and taxis, in that order. However a substantial number of trucks and buses are also involved, while pedestrians and bicyclists have very low numbers.
There are about the same number of traffic accidents (2012) in Bangkok as in all the provinces of the rest of the country combined. In Bangkok, proportionally more personal cars are involved in accidents, while in the 'countryside' pickups feature more prominently. Taking into account the number of motorcycles in Bangkok and the whole country, there are proportionally more accidents involving motorcycles in the capital.
However, while the number of accidents in Bangkok is as high as in the rest of the country, the number of deaths and serious injuries are way lower, while also the number of mildly injured persons is more moderate.
I must caution here that I are talking about reported traffic accidents, where the police department gets involved. Obviously some minor traffic accidents (and probably some accidents with only minor injuries) do not get reported and are handled by the parties involved.
So how can you avoid being a traffic statistic? Either stay off the roads or if you choose to drive understand how the Thais themselves drive and react accordingly. In this video I will show you how I interpret the actions of actions Thai drivers and give a few helpful tips that might help keep you safe.
