Melilla, Spain - In a case of life resembles cinema, Spain's Civil Guard have released a video of an exciting high-speed boat chase between them and a small boat loaded with 300 kilos of hashish in international waters off the Spanish north African territory of Melilla.
An Italian helicopter belonging to Guardia di Finanza (Italian finance police), working with the Spanish officials, captured the live action on video as the Civil Guard vessel Rio Miño chased after the unlucky drug smugglers.
The incident occurred on Wednesday last week when the helicopter, belonging to the Guardia di Finanza Italiano, noticed a sports boat sailing in international waters off Melilla was heading towards the Spanish coast. They could see several packages on board and they immediately suspected that these contained drugs, as similar packages have been seen before in the transportation of hashish.
The Italian agents notified Spain's Civil Guard, who are usually on patrol in the area against drug trafficking and illegal immigration. As can be seen in the video, the Civil Guard boat Río Miño launched a smaller speedboat, which went after them and after a high-speed chase where the drug smugglers made several tricky maneuvers, the officials decided to board the boat while it was still in motion.
According to police sources, once they boarded the vessel they were “met with punches and shoves” by the two Spanish men on board but the criminals were soon apprehended.
Of the boat itself, it was apparently registered in Melilla and flew a Spanish flag, but its registration numbers had been deliberately removed. The drug traffickers were utilizing a high-powered outboard motor to increase the boat's speed, but they were still unable to outrun the Civil Guard.
While this particular action was risky for the officials involved, it is not the first of this nature. Apparently in mid-June the same boat made another great blow to drug trafficking with the intervention of almost two tons of hashish in the process of being transported across to the Andalusian coast.

The Civil Guard has released a video recorded before and after the tragedy of Ceuta where at least 14 people died last Thursday while trying to reach the Spanish coast swimming.
The Civil Guard use this video as a response to criticism from the opposition groups and NGOs because of their actions during the attempt to jump the border fence by the migrants, but it really does not explain anything: images, recorded by security cameras, do not show neither the desperate attempt of Sub-Saharans to reach Spanish territory swimming nor the attitude of the agents, which do not appear in the video.
It shows the arrival of hundreds of migrants to the border, and after a cut off, how some of them throwed stones, but this second part was allegedly recorded after their companions drown in beach of Tarajal after skirting the border jetty , not before.
Thus, the video criminalize migrants, while not bring light on what happened in the water and, most importantly, how was the behaviour of the Spanish agents, who have been accused by some survivors of shooting rubber bullets to the migrants.

Italian Interior Minister, Angelino Alfano, was on Monday shown around around the brand new headquarters of the maritime surveillance department of Spain's Civil Guard, by his Spanish counterpart, Jorge Fernandez Diaz.
Earlier, Alfano was received at the headquarters with full honours by Fernandez Diaz, where he laid a wreath at the memorial to Civil Guards who had fallen in the line of duty.
The visit to the newly opened surveillance unit was a chance for the Italian minister to view the technology available to tackle illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Alfano told journalists that the issue was of a problem for all Mediterranean countries.
"The European border is not a border of one country, it is not the frontier of Spain, Italy or Malta. It is the European border of all," he said.
Hundreds of migrants reach Italy's shores every day, particularly during the summer, when seas are usually calmer.
According to the United Nations' refugee agency, 8,400 migrants landed in Italy and Malta in the first six months of this year, almost double the 4,500 who arrived during the first half of 2012.
Italian officials have demanded that the European Union do more to combat smuggling operations and help countries like Italy cope.

The Civil Guard has released a video recorded before and after the tragedy of Ceuta where at least 14 people died last Thursday while trying to reach the Spanish coast swimming. The Civil Guard use this video as a response to criticism from the opposition groups and NGOs because of their actions during the attempt to jump the border fence by the migrants, but it really does not explain anything: images, recorded by security cameras, do not show neither the desperate attempt of Sub-Saharans to reach Spanish territory swimming nor the attitude of the agents, which do not appear in the video. Italian Interior Minister, Angelino Alfano, was on Monday shown around around the brand new headquarters of the maritime surveillance department of Spain's Civil Guard, by his Spanish counterpart, Jorge Fernandez Diaz. The incident occurred on Wednesday last week when the helicopter, belonging to the Guardia di Finanza Italiano, noticed a sports boat sailing in international waters off Melilla was heading towards the Spanish coast. They could see several packages on board and they immediately suspected that these contained drugs, as similar packages have been seen before in the transportation of hashish.
The Italian agents notified Spain's Civil Guard, who are usually on patrol in the area against drug trafficking and illegal immigration. As can be seen in the video, the Civil Guard boat Río Miño launched a smaller speedboat, which went after them and after a high-speed chase where the drug smugglers made several tricky maneuvers, the officials decided to board the boat while it was still in motion.
According to police sources, once they boarded the vessel they were “met with punches and shoves” by the two Spanish men on board but the criminals were soon apprehended.
Of the boat itself, it was apparently registered in Melilla and flew a Spanish flag, but its registration numbers had been deliberately removed. The drug traffickers were utilizing a high-powered outboard motor to increase the boat's speed, but they were still unable to outrun the Civil Guard.
While this particular action was risky for the officials involved, it is not the first of this nature. Apparently in mid-June the same boat made another great blow to drug trafficking with the intervention of almost two tons of hashish in the process of being transported across to the Andalusian coast.

Italian Interior Minister, Angelino Alfano, was on Monday shown around around the brand new headquarters of the maritime surveillance department of Spain's Civil Guard, by his Spanish counterpart, Jorge Fernandez Diaz.
Earlier, Alfano was received at the headquarters with full honours by Fernandez Diaz, where he laid a wreath at the memorial to Civil Guards who had fallen in the line of duty.
The visit to the newly opened surveillance unit was a chance for the Italian minister to view the technology available to tackle illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Alfano told journalists that the issue was of a problem for all Mediterranean countries.
"The European border is not a border of one country, it is not the frontier of Spain, Italy or Malta. It is the European border of all," he said.
Hundreds of migrants reach Italy's shores every day, particularly during the summer, when seas are usually calmer.
According to the United Nations' refugee agency, 8,400 migrants landed in Italy and Malta in the first six months of this year, almost double the 4,500 who arrived during the first half of 2012.
Italian officials have demanded that the European Union do more to combat smuggling operations and help countries like Italy cope.
