June 24, 2019 - Joseph Kim was born and raised in North Korea. At the age of 12, his father died of starvation and he was separated from his mother and sister. In 2006, Joseph escaped North Korea into China. A year later, he was resettled in the United States as a North Korean refugee.
Since then, Joseph has shared his story from the TED stage, has published a memoir, "Under the Same Sky," has graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from Bard College, and now works at the George W. Bush Institute as an assistant on the Human Freedom Initiative.

In this edition of East Idaho Newsmakers, Nate Eaton speaks with Joseph Kim. Kim is a North Korean refugee who was in eastern Idaho earlier this week as a guest of Ammon Mayor Sean Coletti.
Kim's harrowing story of survival led him to write the book "Under the Same Sky." When he was 12, his father died of starvation. His sister and mother left for China to find food, and his sister was sold to a Chinese man. He never saw his mother again.
Kim was homeless and escaped to China by himself at age 15. He lived on the streets and in the mountains for years before meeting a Christian missionary who connected him with Liberty in North Korea (LINK). Through the organization, Kim was able to seek asylum in the United States.
He currently works at the George W. Bush Institute in Dallas and joined Coletti during this conversation with Nate Eaton.

Joseph
"Joseph" is a masculine given name originating from Hebrew, recorded in the Hebrew Bible, as יוֹסֵף, Standard Hebrew Yossef, Tiberian Hebrew and Aramaic Yôsēp̄. In Arabic, including in the Qur'an, the name is spelled يوسف or Yūsuf. The name can be translated from Hebrew יהוה להוסיף YHWH Lhosif as signifying "JEHOVAH will increase/add".

Joseph is a fashion brand and retail chain that was established in London by Moroccan entrepreneur Joseph Ettedgui and his family in 1972.
History of the brand
The Joseph brand grew from a small shop attached to a hairdressing salon in King's Road, Chelsea, owned by Casablanca-born Joseph Ettedgui and his brothers Maurice and Franklin, to more than 20 London stores, with eight additional outlets in New York and Paris plus stores in Leeds and Manchester.
Joseph Ettedgui’s love of fashion meant the brothers began displaying designer clothes in their hair salon in the 1960s, including the work of pioneering Japanese designer Kenzo Takada. The success of this early collaboration led to a move into fashion retailing, with the first store opening below the Chelsea hair salon in the early 1970s and the first large-scale retail outlet opening on Sloane Street in 1979.

Joseph stores championed the work of many up-and-coming designers, including Margaret Howell, Katharine Hamnett, John Galliano and Azzedine Alaïa. Own brand clothing began with distinctive knitwear (Joseph Tricot) and went on to include women’s clothing, perfume, homewares (Joseph Pour La Maison), and Joe's restaurants. Joseph has been the recipient of a number of British Fashion Awards, including Knitwear Designer of the Year four times between 1990 and 1994 and a British Fashion Award in 2000 presented by Cherie Blair.

Gim (food)
Gim (Korean pronunciation: [ɡiːm]; Korean: 김), also spelled as kim, is the Korean word for edible seaweed in the genus Porphyra. It is similar to nori, a Japanese word for this seaweed and used in the production of sushi in Japan, while it is used for gimbap in Korea. Porphyra is also called laver in English.
History
The earliest mention of gim is recorded in the Samguk Yusa (hangul:삼국유사, hanja:三國遺事) a document created during the Goryeo era documenting the history of the Three Kingdoms Period of Korean history covering 57 BCE to 668. The Samguk Yusa contains passages that record gim having been used as part of the dowry for Shilla royalty. It is conjectured, however, that gim of this period was harvested from rocks and driftwood rather than being cultivated.
From the mid-Joseon period there are records of gim in 15th century documents Gyeongsangdo Jiri Ji(hangul:경상도지리지, hanja: 慶尙道地理誌) and Sinjeung Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam (hangul:신증동국여지승람, hanja:新增東國輿地勝覽). Gim is recorded as a regional delicacy.

The Kim are a people of Chad, who mainly inhabit four villages in the Mayo-Kebbi Est region. The 1993 RGPH census reported a total population of 15,354 in Chad.

A notable use of the name was the fictional street urchin Kimball O'Hara in Rudyard Kipling's book Kim. Since then, Joseph has shared his story from the TED stage, has published a memoir, "Under the Same Sky," has graduated with a B.A. in Political Science from Bard College, and now works at the George W. Bush Institute as an assistant on the Human Freedom Initiative.

In this edition of East Idaho Newsmakers, Nate Eaton speaks with Joseph Kim. Kim is a North Korean refugee who was in eastern Idaho earlier this week as a guest of Ammon Mayor Sean Coletti.
Kim's harrowing story of survival led him to write the book "Under the Same Sky." When he was 12, his father died of starvation. His sister and mother left for China to find food, and his sister was sold to a Chinese man. He never saw his mother again.
Kim was homeless and escaped to China by himself at age 15. He lived on the streets and in the mountains for years before meeting a Christian missionary who connected him with Liberty in North Korea (LINK). Through the organization, Kim was able to seek asylum in the United States.
He currently works at the George W. Bush Institute in Dallas and joined Coletti during this conversation with Nate Eaton.

Joseph
"Joseph" is a masculine given name originating from Hebrew, recorded in the Hebrew Bible, as יוֹסֵף, Standard Hebrew Yossef, Tiberian Hebrew and Aramaic Yôsēp̄. In Arabic, including in the Qur'an, the name is spelled يوسف or Yūsuf. The name can be translated from Hebrew יהוה להוסיף YHWH Lhosif as signifying "JEHOVAH will increase/add".
In the Old Testament, Joseph is Jacob's eleventh son and Rachel's first (Yossef ben-Yaakov in the Jewish Bible). In the New Testament, Joseph is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus. In the New Testament there is another Joseph as well, Joseph of Arimathea, a secret disciple of Jesus who supplied the tomb in which Jesus was buried.
