You might not know who Arjan Roskam is, but you've probably smoked his weed. Arjan's been breeding some of the most famous marijuana strains in the world—like White Widow, Super Silver Haze, and many others—for over 20 years.
In 1992 he opened his first coffee shop in Amsterdam and has since crafted his marijuana-breeding skills into a market-savvy empire known as Green House Seed Company, which rakes in millions of dollars a year.
He's won 38 Cannabis Cups and has dubbed himself the King of Cannabis.
VICE joins Arjan and his crew of strain hunters in Colombia to look for three of the country's rarest types of weed, strains that have remained genetically pure for decades. In grower's terms, these are called landraces. We trudge up mountains and crisscross military checkpoints in the country's still-violent south, and then head north to the breathtaking Caribbean coast. As the dominoes of criminalization fall throughout the world, Arjan is positioned to be at the forefront of the legitimate international seed trade.

Am liebsten fahren die Deutschen immer noch mit ihrem Auto in den Urlaub. Ohne gute Reifen läuft da nichts. Ein boomender Markt, ein Milliardengeschäft. Allein in Deutschland werden jährlich mehr als 50 Millionen Reifen verkauft. Wo kommt deren wichtigster Bestandteil, der Gummi eigentlich her?
Der größte Produzent von Gummi, dem Naturkautschuk, ist Thailand. Auf den Plantagen des Landes werden über vier Millionen Tonnen Kautschuk jährlich geerntet. Allein in den vergangenen 30 Jahren ist die Produktion hier um 300 Prozent gestiegen. Einem Team von Exclusiv im Ersten ist es gelungen, auf Plantagen in Südostasien zu drehen. Die Arbeitsbedingungen sind hart. Bis zu 12 Stunden am Tag schuften die Arbeiter, zu sehr niedrigen Löhnen. Außerdem werden auf den Plantagen giftige Herbizide gegen Unkraut versprüht, die z.B. in Europa verboten sind. Für die Arbeiter auf den Feldern ein hohes Gesundheitsrisiko.
Nach der Kautschuk-Ernte landet das ,,weiße Gold'' bei Zwischenhändlern, die den Gummi weiter verkaufen, auch an deutsche Reifenkonzerne. Während beim größten Kautschukproduzenten Thailand die Anbauflächen leicht sinken, steigen sie im Nachbarland Kambodscha. Auch hier sind die Arbeitsbedingungen auf den Feldern extrem. Der Markt für Autoreifen wächst stetig, weltweit. Deutsche Konzerne wie z.B. Continental betonen, sie würden ,,natürliche Rohstoffe gewissenhaft'' verwenden.
Viele Autofahrer machen sich wohl kaum Gedanken, woher der Gummi stammt, der in ihren Reifen steckt.

Bernd Oelkers aus Wenzendorf in Niedersachsen gehört zu den größten Weihnachtsbaumproduzenten Deutschlands. Auf dem Land seines Familienunternehmens wachsen rund drei Millionen Nadelbäume.
Kaum einer kennt die Geheimnisse des perfekten Weihnachtsbaumes so gut wie er. Das Wichtigste ist eine gesunde und gerade Spitze. Damit er das erreichen kann, ritzt er mit Spezialzangen in die Rinde, um das Längenwachstum der Spitzen zu regulieren. Damit die jungen Spitzen nicht abknicken, wenn sich ein Vogel auf sie setzt, verstärkt er sie mit Stäben.
Um die Zeit der Eisheiligen herum, Mitte Mai, sind seine Pflanzen in besonderer Gefahr. Bei Minusgraden drohen die frischen Triebe zu erfrieren. Damit das nicht passiert, nutzt er etwas, was auf den ersten Blick unlogisch erscheint: gefrorenes Wasser.
Ab Mitte November dröhnen dann die Motorsägen auf den Feldern. Arbeitstrupps fällen an Spitzentagen bis zu 10.000 Weihnachtsbäume für Privatkunden und den Großhandel. Pro Saison verkauft Bernd Oelkers rund 250.000 Bäume an Kunden in ganz Europa und weit über die Grenzen hinaus, zum Beispiel bis nach Malaysia.

Swaziland is a landlocked country sandwiched between South Africa and Mozambique. Despite Swaziland's small size, it boasts more hectares of land dedicated to growing Cannabis than all of India. It is also home to Swazi Gold, the legendary sativa strain.
Hamilton Morris travels to Swaziland hoping to chemically analyze the cannabinoids present in some of the local strains. Instead, he finds a country steeped in political corruption and economic turmoil. Cannabis is viewed by many growers, users, and politicians as a drug that will cause insanity, but it may be Swaziland's only hope for economic stability.

Früher bezeichnete man Salz als «weisses Gold», weil es teuer importiert werden musste. Zurzeit ist die Versorgung mit Salz kein Thema mehr. Diskutiert wird vielmehr die Bekämpfung von übermässigem Salzkonsum. Am Toten Meer wird das salzreiche Wasser zur Linderung von Hautkrankheiten genutzt. Dort wo der extrem hohe Salzgehalt kaum Leben zulässt, finden sich jedoch Einzeller aus Urzeiten.

Dessie
Dessie (Amharic: ደሴ?) (also spelled Dese or Dessye), is a city and a woreda in north-central Ethiopia. Located in the Debub Wollo Zone of the Amhara Region, it sits at a latitude and longitude of 11°8′N 39°38′E / 11.133°N 39.633°E / 11.133; 39.633, with an elevation between 2,470 and 2,550 metres above sea level.
Dessie is located along Ethiopian Highway 1. It has postal service (a post office was established in the 1920s), and telephone service from at least as early as 1954. The city has had electrical power since at least 1963 when a new diesel-powered electric power station with a power line to Kombolcha was completed, at a cost of Eth$ 110,000. Intercity bus service is provided by the Selam Bus Line Share Company. Dessie shares Combolcha Airport (ICAO code HADC, IATA DSE) with neighbouring Kombolcha.
Dessie is home to a museum, in the former home of Dejazmach Yoseph Birru. It also has a zawiya of the Qadiriyya order of Islam, which was the first Sufi order to be introduced into north-east Africa.

Farmer
A farmer (also called an agriculturer) is a person engaged in agriculture, raising living organisms for food or raw materials. The term usually applies to people who do some combination of raising field crops, orchards, vineyards, poultry, or other livestock. A farmer might own the farmed land or might work as a labourer on land owned by others, but in advanced economies, a farmer is usually a farm owner, while employees of the farm are known as farm workers, or farmhands. However, in the not so distant past a farmer was a person who promotes or improves the growth of (a plant, crop, etc.) by labor and attention, land or crops or raises animals (as livestock or fish).
History
Farming has been dated back as far as the Neolithic era. By the Bronze Age, the Sumerians had an agriculture specialized labour force by 5000–4000 BCE, and heavily depended on irrigation to grow crops. They relied on three-person teams when harvesting in the spring. The Ancient Egypt farmers farmed and relied and irrigated their water from the Nile.

Gold farming
Gold farming is the practice of playing a massively multiplayer online game (MMO) to acquire in-game currency that other players purchase in exchange for real-world money. People in several developing nations have held full-time employment as gold farmers.
While most game operators expressly ban the practice of selling in-game currency for real-world cash, gold farming is lucrative because it takes advantage of economic inequality and the fact that much time is needed to earn in-game currency. Rich players from developed countries, wishing to save many hours of playing time, may be willing to pay substantial sums to gold farmers from developing countries.
History
What began as a cottage industry in the late 1990s became increasingly more commercialized in the 2000s with the growing popularity of massively multiplayer online games.
While in the past players used eBay and PayPal to sell each other items and gold from games like Ultima Online and Lineage, contemporary, commercialized gold farming may have its origins in South Korea. 2001 reports describe Korean cybercafes being converted into gold farming operations to serve domestic demand. This model, with full-time gold farmers working long hours in cybercafes, was outsourced to China and initially served demand from Korean and Western players. Gold farming in China was experiencing swift growth c. 2004. In 2011 The Guardian reported that prisoners in Chinese labor camps were forced to engage in gold farming for the benefit of prison authorities.

You might not know who Arjan Roskam is, but you've probably smoked his weed. Arjan's been breeding some of the most famous marijuana strains in the world—like White Widow, Super Silver Haze, and many others—for over 20 years.
In 1992 he opened his first coffee shop in Amsterdam and has since crafted his marijuana-breeding skills into a market-savvy empire known as Green House Seed Company, which rakes in millions of dollars a year.
He's won 38 Cannabis Cups and has dubbed himself the King of Cannabis.
VICE joins Arjan and his crew of strain hunters in Colombia to look for three of the country's rarest types of weed, strains that have remained genetically pure for decades. In grower's terms, these are called landraces. We trudge up mountains and crisscross military checkpoints in the country's still-violent south, and then head north to the breathtaking Caribbean coast. As the dominoes of criminalization fall throughout the world, Arjan is positioned to be at the forefront of the legitimate international seed trade.

Bernd Oelkers aus Wenzendorf in Niedersachsen gehört zu den größten Weihnachtsbaumproduzenten Deutschlands. Auf dem Land seines Familienunternehmens wachsen rund drei Millionen Nadelbäume.
Kaum einer kennt die Geheimnisse des perfekten Weihnachtsbaumes so gut wie er. Das Wichtigste ist eine gesunde und gerade Spitze. Damit er das erreichen kann, ritzt er mit Spezialzangen in die Rinde, um das Längenwachstum der Spitzen zu regulieren. Damit die jungen Spitzen nicht abknicken, wenn sich ein Vogel auf sie setzt, verstärkt er sie mit Stäben.
Um die Zeit der Eisheiligen herum, Mitte Mai, sind seine Pflanzen in besonderer Gefahr. Bei Minusgraden drohen die frischen Triebe zu erfrieren. Damit das nicht passiert, nutzt er etwas, was auf den ersten Blick unlogisch erscheint: gefrorenes Wasser.
Ab Mitte November dröhnen dann die Motorsägen auf den Feldern. Arbeitstrupps fällen an Spitzentagen bis zu 10.000 Weihnachtsbäume für Privatkunden und den Großhandel. Pro Saison verkauft Bernd Oelkers rund 250.000 Bäume an Kunden in ganz Europa und weit über die Grenzen hinaus, zum Beispiel bis nach Malaysia.

Swaziland is a landlocked country sandwiched between South Africa and Mozambique. Despite Swaziland's small size, it boasts more hectares of land dedicated to growing Cannabis than all of India. It is also home to Swazi Gold, the legendary sativa strain.
Hamilton Morris travels to Swaziland hoping to chemically analyze the cannabinoids present in some of the local strains. Instead, he finds a country steeped in political corruption and economic turmoil. Cannabis is viewed by many growers, users, and politicians as a drug that will cause insanity, but it may be Swaziland's only hope for economic stability.

Diskutiert wird vielmehr die Bekämpfung von übermässigem Salzkonsum. Am Toten Meer wird das salzreiche Wasser zur Linderung von Hautkrankheiten genutzt. Dort wo der extrem hohe Salzgehalt kaum Leben zulässt, finden sich jedoch Einzeller aus Urzeiten.

Seit Januar 2018 ist Cannabis als Rauschmittel in Kalifornien legal erhältlich. In speziellen Geschäften, den sogenannten Dispensaries, können sich Kunden zu den Grassorten beraten lassen, je nachdem, ob der Stoff eher beruhigend oder aufputschend wirken soll.

You might not know who Arjan Roskam is, but you've probably smoked his weed. Arjan's been breeding some of the most famous marijuana strains in the world—like White Widow, Super Silver Haze, and many others—for over 20 years.
In 1992 he opened his first coffee shop in Amsterdam and has since crafted his marijuana-breeding skills into a market-savvy empire known as Green House Seed Company, which rakes in millions of dollars a year.
He's won 38 Cannabis Cups and has dubbed himself the King of Cannabis.
VICE joins Arjan and his crew of strain hunters in Colombia to look for three of the country's rarest types of weed, strains that have remained genetically pure for decades. In grower's terms, these are called landraces. We trudge up mountains and crisscross military checkpoints in the country's still-violent south, and then head north to the breathtaking Caribbean coast. As the dominoes of criminalization fall throughout the world, Arjan is positioned to be at the forefront of the legitimate international seed trade.

Am liebsten fahren die Deutschen immer noch mit ihrem Auto in den Urlaub. Ohne gute Reifen läuft da nichts. Ein boomender Markt, ein Milliardengeschäft. Allein in Deutschland werden jährlich mehr als 50 Millionen Reifen verkauft. Wo kommt deren wichtigster Bestandteil, der Gummi eigentlich her?
Der größte Produzent von Gummi, dem Naturkautschuk, ist Thailand. Auf den Plantagen des Landes werden über vier Millionen Tonnen Kautschuk jährlich geerntet. Allein in den vergangenen 30 Jahren ist die Produktion hier um 300 Prozent gestiegen. Einem Team von Exclusiv im Ersten ist es gelungen, auf Plantagen in Südostasien zu drehen. Die Arbeitsbedingungen sind hart. Bis zu 12 Stunden am Tag schuften die Arbeiter, zu sehr niedrigen Löhnen. Außerdem werden auf den Plantagen giftige Herbizide gegen Unkraut versprüht, die z.B. in Europa verboten sind. Für die Arbeiter auf den Feldern ein hohes Gesundheitsrisiko.
Nach der Kautschuk-Ernte landet das ,,weiße Gold'' bei Zwischenhändlern, die den Gummi weiter verkaufen, auch an deutsche Reifenkonzerne. Während beim größten Kautschukproduzenten Thailand die Anbauflächen leicht sinken, steigen sie im Nachbarland Kambodscha. Auch hier sind die Arbeitsbedingungen auf den Feldern extrem. Der Markt für Autoreifen wächst stetig, weltweit. Deutsche Konzerne wie z.B. Continental betonen, sie würden ,,natürliche Rohstoffe gewissenhaft'' verwenden.
Viele Autofahrer machen sich wohl kaum Gedanken, woher der Gummi stammt, der in ihren Reifen steckt.

Bernd Oelkers aus Wenzendorf in Niedersachsen gehört zu den größten Weihnachtsbaumproduzenten Deutschlands. Auf dem Land seines Familienunternehmens wachsen rund drei Millionen Nadelbäume.
Kaum einer kennt die Geheimnisse des perfekten Weihnachtsbaumes so gut wie er. Das Wichtigste ist eine gesunde und gerade Spitze. Damit er das erreichen kann, ritzt er mit Spezialzangen in die Rinde, um das Längenwachstum der Spitzen zu regulieren. Damit die jungen Spitzen nicht abknicken, wenn sich ein Vogel auf sie setzt, verstärkt er sie mit Stäben.
Um die Zeit der Eisheiligen herum, Mitte Mai, sind seine Pflanzen in besonderer Gefahr. Bei Minusgraden drohen die frischen Triebe zu erfrieren. Damit das nicht passiert, nutzt er etwas, was auf den ersten Blick unlogisch erscheint: gefrorenes Wasser.
Ab Mitte November dröhnen dann die Motorsägen auf den Feldern. Arbeitstrupps fällen an Spitzentagen bis zu 10.000 Weihnachtsbäume für Privatkunden und den Großhandel. Pro Saison verkauft Bernd Oelkers rund 250.000 Bäume an Kunden in ganz Europa und weit über die Grenzen hinaus, zum Beispiel bis nach Malaysia.

Swaziland is a landlocked country sandwiched between South Africa and Mozambique. Despite Swaziland's small size, it boasts more hectares of land dedicated to growing Cannabis than all of India. It is also home to Swazi Gold, the legendary sativa strain.
Hamilton Morris travels to Swaziland hoping to chemically analyze the cannabinoids present in some of the local strains. Instead, he finds a country steeped in political corruption and economic turmoil. Cannabis is viewed by many growers, users, and politicians as a drug that will cause insanity, but it may be Swaziland's only hope for economic stability.

Früher bezeichnete man Salz als «weisses Gold», weil es teuer importiert werden musste. Zurzeit ist die Versorgung mit Salz kein Thema mehr. Diskutiert wird vielmehr die Bekämpfung von übermässigem Salzkonsum. Am Toten Meer wird das salzreiche Wasser zur Linderung von Hautkrankheiten genutzt. Dort wo der extrem hohe Salzgehalt kaum Leben zulässt, finden sich jedoch Einzeller aus Urzeiten.

Over a decade ago, filmmaker Chew Han Tah learned of the dwindling number of wild arowana, and an obsession was born, much to the chagrin of his wife. Chew is exploring the potentially lucrative business of breeding arowana and is in the midst of moving his family to a new home so that he can upgrade his aquarium for his $30,000 worth of fish.
In this very personal journey into the heart of Malaysia's flourishing fish business, we see what motivates collectors and investors, and what fuels Chew's dreams.
