Sir Ian Murray McKellen, CH, CBE (born 25 May 1939) is an English actor. He is the recipient of six Laurence Olivier Awards, a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a BIF Award, two Saturn Awards, four Drama Desk Awards and two Critics' Choice Awards. He has also received two Academy Award nominations, four BAFTA nominations and five Emmy Award nominations. McKellen's work spans genres ranging from Shakespearean and modern theatre to popular fantasy and science fiction. His most well known film roles include Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies and Magneto in the X-Men films.
McKellen was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1979,knighted in 1991 for services to the performing arts, and made a Companion of Honour for services to drama and to equality, in the 2008 New Year Honours. He was made a Freeman of the City of London in October 2014.
McKellen was born on 25 May 1939 in Burnley, Lancashire, the son of Margery Lois (née Sutcliffe) and Denis Murray McKellen, a civil engineer. He was their second child, with a sister, Jean, five years his senior. Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, his family moved to Wigan. They lived there through the war and his early childhood. They relocated to Bolton in 1951, after his father had been promoted. The experience of living through the war as a young child had some lasting impact on him, and he later claimed that "only after peace resumed ... did I realise that war wasn't normal." In response to an interview question, when an interviewer remarked that he seemed quite calm in the aftermath of 11 September attacks, he said: "Well, darling, you forget—I slept under a steel plate until I was four years old."

Ian Patrick was the Private Secretary to the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina when Lord Ashdown occupied the role, working with Edward Llewellyn. Ian Patrick was Lord Ashdown's Private Secretary from 1998-2002, prior to going to Bosnia and features in Lord Ashdown's autobiography, A Fortunate Life which he encouraged Ashdown to write. For his work in Bosnia Ian was awarded the MBE in the 2006 New Year Honours List. Ian Patrick is currently a special advisor to Sir John Sawers GCMG.
Sir Patrick Stewart OBE (born 13 July 1940) is an English actor whose career has included roles on stage, television, and film. Beginning his career with a long run with the Royal Shakespeare Company, his first major screen roles were in BBC-broadcast television and film during the mid-late 1970s, including Hedda and the miniseries I, Claudius. In the 1980s, he began working in American television and film, with roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and its successor films; as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men series of superhero movies; and voice roles including CIA deputy director Avery Bullock in American Dad! and narrating the film Ted and its sequel. He currently stars in the Starz TV series Blunt Talk. In 1993, TV Guide named him the best dramatic television actor of the 1980s.
Patrick Stewart was born on 13 July 1940 in Mirfield, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, to Gladys (née Barrowclough), a weaver and textile worker, and Alfred Stewart, a Regimental Sergeant Major in the British Army. He has two older brothers, Geoffrey (b. 28 January 1925, Mirfield) and Trevor (b. 10 August 1935, Mirfield).
Guy Rolfe (27 December 1911 – 19 October 2003) was an English actor who specialised in playing villains.
He was born Edwin Arthur Rolfe. Rolfe was a professional boxer and racing driver before turning to acting at the age of 24.
He made his screen debut in 1937 with an uncredited appearance in Knight Without Armour. He also played Prince John in Ivanhoe (1952), Ned Seymour in Young Bess (1953), Caiaphas in King of Kings (1961), and Prince Grigory in Taras Bulba (1962). He appeared in five films of the Puppet Master series as Andre Toulon.
His television credits include The Saint, The Avengers, The Champions, Department S, The Troubleshooters, Space: 1999, Secret Army and Kessler.
He is buried in Benhall's St Mary's churchyard.

Sir Ian McKellen didn't have to think too long when director Peter Jackson approached him about revisiting his "Lord of the Rings" character Gandalf for "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." The classically trained actor was eager to put on his cloak and beard and go back to Middle-earth to reunite with many of the cast members he had worked with before. Tribute.ca spoke with Ian about what it was like returning to this character, his thoughts on Martin Freeman (who plays Bilbo) and what inspired him to become an actor.
