The Footy Show is a Logie Award winning Australian sports and variety entertainment television program, shown on the Nine Network and its affiliates. The show, which is dedicated to the Australian Football League (AFL) and Australian rules football, made its debut on 24 March 1994. The show has won several Logies. Originally hosted by Eddie McGuire, from its inception in 1994 to 2005, he was replaced in the 2006 season by Garry Lyon and James Brayshaw
The name The Footy Show derives from the diminutive form of the word football commonly used in Australian English.
John Noel William "Sam" Newman (born 22 December 1945) is a retired Australian rules football player for the Geelong Football Club and television personality. He is an original presenter on The Footy Show (AFL).
Newman attended Geelong Grammar School, where his father was a teacher. He made his debut for Geelong in 1964 when he was 18 years old. Early in his time at Geelong he acquired the nickname "Sam", by which he is now well known.
During his career (1964-80) with Geelong he captained the club and also won two best and fairest awards (1968 and 1975). During the first semi-final against Collingwood in 1967, Newman suffered a serious injury which forced surgeons to remove part of his kidney. He was also selected as an All-Australian player in 1969. He played for the Victorian state team eight times. He retired in 1980, having polled 100 Brownlow Medal votes throughout his career. In 2002, he was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
In December 2005, Newman was appointed as ruck coach for the Melbourne Football Club to mentor players such as Jeff White, Mark Jamar and Paul Johnson.
Lewis Thomas Charles "Lou" Richards, MBE (born 15 March 1923) is a retired Australian rules footballer, who played 250 games with the Collingwood Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1941 and 1955. Richards married Edna Lillian Bowie in 1948; the couple had two daughters.
Born in Collingwood, Victoria, Richards' passion for Collingwood grew out of family connections – he followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Charlie H. Pannam (shortened from Pannamopoulos after migrating to Australia from Greece), and uncles Charles and Alby Pannam, both former Magpie players. His brother Ron Richards also played for the club. The Richards/Pannam dynasty made Collingwood the only club to have been captained by three generations of the one family. As a family they played over 1200 games between them.
Richards played as a rover, resting in the forward pocket.
He was captain of the club for four years, including Collingwood's 1953 premiership team.
