Easter 1916 was a turning point for Ireland and its situation between Home Rule and Irish soldiers serving on the fronts of Gallipoli and the Western Front. Easter Rising
The Easter Rising (Irish: Éirí Amach na Cásca), also known as the Easter Rebellion, was an armed insurrection in Ireland during Easter Week, 1916. The Rising was mounted by Irish republicans to end British rule in Ireland and establish an independent Irish Republic while the United Kingdom was heavily engaged in World War I. It was the most significant uprising in Ireland since the rebellion of 1798.
Organised by seven members of the Military Council of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, the Rising began on Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, and lasted for six days. Members of the Irish Volunteers — led by schoolmaster and Irish language activist Patrick Pearse, joined by the smaller Irish Citizen Army of James Connolly, along with 200 members of Cumann na mBan — seized key locations in Dublin and proclaimed an Irish Republic. There were isolated actions in other parts of Ireland, with an attack on the Royal Irish Constabulary barracks at Ashbourne, County Meath and abortive attacks on other barracks in County Galway and at Enniscorthy, County Wexford.

Easter (Old English usually Ēastrun, -on, or -an; also Ēastru, -o; and Ēostre), also called Pasch (derived, through Latin: Pascha and Greek Πάσχα Paskha, from Aramaic: פסחא, cognate to Hebrew: פֶּסַח Pesaḥ) or Resurrection Sunday, is a festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial after his crucifixion by Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD. It is the culmination of the Passion of Christ, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.
The week before Easter is called Holy Week, and it contains the days of the Easter Triduum, including Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Maundy and Last Supper, as well as Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus. In western Christianity, Eastertide, the Easter Season, begins on Easter Sunday and lasts seven weeks, ending with the coming of the fiftieth day, Pentecost Sunday. In Orthodoxy, the season of Pascha begins on Pascha and ends with the coming of the fortieth day, the Feast of the Ascension.

1916 (MCMXVI) was a leap year starting on Saturday (dominical letter BA) of the Gregorian calendar and a leap year starting on Friday (dominical letter CB) of the Julian calendar, the 1916th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 916th year of the 2nd millennium, the 16th year of the 20th century, and the 7th year of the 1910s decade. Note that the Julian day for 1916 is 13 calendar days difference, which continued to be used from 1582 until the complete conversion of the Gregorian calendar was entirely done in 1929.

Easter a century ago was not a time of peace in Ireland. The 1916 Easter Uprising - in which hundreds of people were killed or injured - was an armed rebellion by Republicans to end British rule. Lasting six days, it went largely undocumented, due to the costly and cumbersome nature of photography. But a new exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery in London is aiming to show how the then new medium played an important role in informing Ireland's national consciousness that eventually led to independence, featuring rarely seen pictures going back to the 1840s. But a new exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery in London is aiming to show how the then new medium played an important role in informing Ireland's national consciousness that eventually led to independence, featuring rarely seen pictures going back to the 1840s. Learn about one of the most important events in modern Irish history. On Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, a group of Irish nationalists proclaimed the establishment of the Irish Republic. They, along with some 1,600 followers, staged a rebellion against the British government in Ireland.
It all started at a modest post office in Dublin and led to a direct clash with British troops.

In the last 100 years Thomas Clarke has been largely overlooked and forgotten yet it was he who was the driving force of the rebellion and it was his drive, enthusiasm and natural sense of independence which led the Irish Republican Brotherhood decision to start a rebellion during the great war. The other signatories of the Proclamation insisted that he should sign it first he was held in such high esteem for his unbreakable spirit. This documentary relates the exciting journey Clarke made from the dynamite campaign, his 15 years penal servitude to The Rising. This story is told by the grand-niece of Kathleen Clarke and author of "16 Lives Tom Clarke" by Helen Litton. It also includes distinguished historians Micheal O'Doibhilin and Joseph EA Connell Jr. It also features an original soundtrack by PJ McDonald performing "Our Own Rebel Hero".
