The Victoria line is a deep-level London Underground route running from Brixton in the south in Zone 2 to Walthamstow Central in the north-east in Zone 3 of London. It is coloured light blue on the Tube map. It is one of two underground lines to run entirely below ground, the other being the Waterloo & City line. Constructed in the 1960s, it was the first entirely new tube line in London for fifty years, and was designed to relieve congestion on other lines, in particular the Piccadilly line and the Charing Cross branch of the Northern line. The line has always been operated using automatic train operation, but all trains carry drivers.
The Victoria line is used by 200 million passengers each year, making it the sixth most heavily used line on the network in absolute figures, but in terms of the average number of journeys per mile it is by far the most intensively used line.
A tube railway running from Victoria to Walthamstow was first proposed by a Working Party set up by the British Transport Commission in 1948, though that largely followed a 1946 plan for a Croydon to Finsbury Park line. The main purpose was to relieve congestion in the central area. The necessary Private Bill was introduced into Parliament in 1955. It described a line from Victoria to Walthamstow (Wood Street). There was also a proposal, though not included in the Bill, for a subsequent extension from Victoria to Fulham Broadway station on the District line.
*** Commentary is contained in the closed captions for this video. *** Today’s film shows one of my favorite London Underground lines, the Victoria Line. It opened in 1968 and runs underground for the entirety of the line. It has been run with automatic train operation since day one, and it has been really optimized for speed. Trains accelerate and decelerate absolutely precisely, and there are no delays between stopping and opening the doors. Currently 2009 Stock trains are used on the line, which are very clean and modern. Also, the service frequency is quite amazing, with a train running every minute during peak times. This film shows scenes from Finsbury Park, Brixton and Pimlico as well as a short ride from Brixton to Stockwell. At Finsbury Park the film also briefly features a ...

No titles. London. Good shot of train coming to halt at Victorian Line tube platform. We see Queen Elizabeth, about to open the new Victoria Line underground service, putting a coin in a machine to get her tube ticket, then going through a ticket barrier at Green Park tube station. Good shots of the Queen and entourage on the escalator. M/S of the Queen in the driver's cab of the tube train as they set off. View from rear of train as we go through the tunnel. Point of view shot from front of train as we zoom along towards Oxford Circus. Train pulls in to newly-built station of Oxford Circus. The Victoria line was built in stages from 1968-1971. As stations opened, each platform was given a different tiling motif, located within seat recesses and designed by various artists. We looked at a couple of these designs in our Secrets of the Victoria Line video, but here - Geoff travels to all 16 stations again to look specifically at each tiling pattern and uncover its meaning, as some are less obvious than others. Also, note that Geoff IS wearing the same light blue t-shirt he wore in the Victoria line video -- just underneath a dark blue shirt. Also, the shade of blue on the captions is also the appropriate colour. Secrets of the Victoria Line: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A9plKfa79U
After 43 years in service the '67 stock Victoria Line trains are being replaced. 30th June 2011 was the last scheduled serviced, for two trips between Seven Sisters and Brixton. So we dispatched Vicki to check it out, and Geoff with his video camera, and this is what we came up with ...

Let's kick off a new season with a ride on the Tube, and with it being my favourite line, I had to do a full journey on the Victoria Line from Walthamstow Central to Brixton! Note: Due to overcrowding at points in the journey (mainly between Kings Cross - Victoria), audio recordings make up for any bits which are not on video (there isn't much to see anyway). All recordings made on 3rd January 2015.
