CHUB FISHING ON THE RIVER DEARNE
CHUB FISHING ON THE RIVER DEARNE
Russell Barker showing you a roving style approach is the best way of fishing on the River Dearne in South Yorks. A wide variety of species of fish can be caught on this small river but are in short supply with a few large chub and barbel to be had if you put in the leg work and travel light. Be prepared for a lot of blank sessions if specimen fish is your target.- published: 08 Aug 2013

Nature morning walk. Barnsley Canal. Yorkshire
Nature morning walk. Barnsley Canal. Yorkshire
This walk belongs to Dearne Valley Country Park Find out about Dearne Valley Country Park near Barnsley from the local Council page: www.barnsley.gov.uk/services/environment-and-planning/parks-and-open-spaces/parks/dearne-valley-country-park Dearne Valley runs alonside the river for two miles from Old Mill to the Trans Pennine Trail viaduct at Lundwood. It is for mixed informal recreational use such as walking, cycling, angling and for wildlife, as part of the site is a local nature reserve. There are also facilities for children's play up to age 11 and a skate park. Location The park is situated less than a mile from the town centre and is surrounded by communities such as Oakwell, Old Mill, Monk Bretton, Lundwood, Stairfoot and Hoyle Mill. It is open all hours. Growth Point Project 'Growth Point' is a government led initiative relating to the requirement on certain boroughs in the country to plan for a large increase in housing in parts of the area. Barnsley is one of those boroughs. To lessen the impact of this housing, some funding was put aside for protecting and improving some of the better environmental features nearby. BMBC's Parks Services and Public Rights of Way teams successfully bid for £123,000 of this funding for recreation and wildlife improvements to Dearne Valley Park. This was awarded in September 2010 and we have spent the winter bringing most of the sub-projects in the park to completion. The majority of works were completed by 31 March 2011. Tree works as part of the project to rewet a dried up section of the disused Dearne and Dove Canal, November 2010 Works have included: - Path improvements including the route around Hoyle Mill Pond, better facilities for cyclists and equestrians, a family orienteering trail and self-guided circular walks - Habitat works to encourage otters and voles - A pond and new woodland planting in Cliffe Wood, Monk Bretton - Canoe access points and fishing points along the banks of the Dearne - New woodland planting near Grange Lane and Monk Bretton Priory - A new 'feature point' designed and implemented with the help of youth groups - The rewetting of a stretch of the Dearne and Dove Canal Members of the O-zone youth group undertaking thinning works, December 2010 Partners include Neighbourhood Pride, Drainage, Direct Works and Youth Offending Teams plus Ward Members, O-zone Youth Groups, Burton Road Primary pupils, Hoyle Mill Angling Club and Manvers Tri-club.- published: 13 Jun 2014
