Amritsar is a city in the north-western part of India. It is the spiritual centre for the Sikh religion and the administrative headquarters of the Amritsar district in the state of Punjab. This is a famous sikh district in Punjab, India. One reason behind this is because of Sri Harmandar Sahib also known as The Golden Temple.
It is home to the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), the spiritual and cultural center for the Sikh religion. This important Sikh shrine attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal with more than 100,000 visitors on week days alone and is the most popular destination for Non-resident Indians (NRI) in the whole of India. The city also houses the Sikh temporal and political authority, Akal Takht, as well as the Sikh Parliament.
The main commercial activities include tourism, carpets and fabrics, farm produce, handicrafts, service trades, and light engineering. The city is known for its rich cuisine and culture, and for the tragic incident of Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919 under British Rule.

It is the spiritual center for the Sikh religion and the administrative headquarters of the Amritsar district in the state of Punjab.
It is home to the Harmandir Sahib (referred to as the "Golden Temple" in the western media), the spiritual and cultural center for the Sikh religion. This important Sikh shrine attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal with more than 100,000 visitors on week days alone and is the most popular destination for Non-resident Indians (NRI) in the whole of India. The city also houses the Sikh temporal and political authority, Akal Takht, as well as the Sikh Parliament.
The 2011 Indian census reported the population of the city to be 1,132,761. Amritsar is situated 217 kilometres (135 mi) northwest of state capital Chandigarh and is 32 kilometres (20 mi) east of Lahore, Pakistan and therefore, very close to India's western border with Pakistan.

WATCH THE UPDATED VERSION AT THIS LINK: http://youtu.be/QKI2Ojx_DpY UNITED SIKHS will premiere tonight (24th June 2014) on Sangat TV the first episode of a three-part documentary series 'Unheard Voices', which tells the story of how Sikhs continue their 30-year wait for justice for the thousands of innocent pilgrims who were killed by the Indian Army and for the restitution of the Sikh Reference Library, whose contents were removed before it was burnt by the Army during the attack on the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) Complex. This massacre of pilgrims took place during the Indian Army attack, codenamed Blue Star, on Darbar Sahib from the 1st of June to the 6th of June 1984, killing thousands whilst desecrating the sanctum sanctorum of Sikhs. The first episode, 'The Smoking Gun Recovered', presents eyewitness accounts of how the contents of the Sikh Reference Library, which was located in the Darbar Sahib complex and which held the invaluable heritage of the Sikhs, were removed by the Indian Army before it was burnt during the June 1984 attack. The Library housed historical saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal Sikh Guru, one of which was dated 1604, In 1991, the Government of India, under pressure from Sikhs for the return of their heritage, returned some 29 books, which included four original Accession Registers that were a catalogue of the Library's contents. The Registers were the 'smoking gun' that proved that the Library's contents, including the Saroops of Guru Grant Sahib Ji, were removed by the Indian Government before the Library was burnt. Despite a Punjab and Haryana High Court order in 2004, the Indian Government has failed to return the contents of the Library. It is home to the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), the spiritual and cultural center for the Sikh religion. This important Sikh shrine attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal with more than 100,000 visitors on week days alone and is the most popular destination for Non-resident Indians (NRI) in the whole of India. The city also houses the Sikh temporal and political authority, Akal Takht, as well as the Sikh Parliament.
The main commercial activities include tourism, carpets and fabrics, farm produce, handicrafts, service trades, and light engineering. The city is known for its rich cuisine and culture, and for the tragic incident of Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919 under British Rule.

this is not the first time many have been healed similary it happened some years ago Vasu Bhardwaj (a cancer patient last stage) doctors told him that he might live only few days may be 5-10 so he was advised to visit darbar sahib & his family urged him to go to darbar sahib & request for an akhand path as he had lost all his hope he was sitting in the room where Akhand paath was going & suddenly he had a spritiual experience & the rest is history even doctors were astonished.

UNITED SIKHS will premiere tonight (24th June 2014) on Sangat TV the first episode of a three-part documentary series 'Unheard Voices', which tells the story of how Sikhs continue their 30-year wait for justice for the thousands of innocent pilgrims who were killed by the Indian Army and for the restitution of the Sikh Reference Library, whose contents were removed before it was burnt by the Army during the attack on the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) Complex. This massacre of pilgrims took place during the Indian Army attack, codenamed Blue Star, on Darbar Sahib from the 1st of June to the 6th of June 1984, killing thousands whilst desecrating the sanctum sanctorum of Sikhs.
The first episode, 'The Smoking Gun Recovered', presents eyewitness accounts of how the contents of the Sikh Reference Library, which was located in the Darbar Sahib complex and which held the invaluable heritage of the Sikhs, were removed by the Indian Army before it was burnt during the June 1984 attack. The Library housed historical saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the eternal Sikh Guru, one of which was dated 1604,
In 1991, the Government of India, under pressure from Sikhs for the return of their heritage, returned some 29 books, which included four original Accession Registers that were a catalogue of the Library's contents. The Registers were the 'smoking gun' that proved that the Library's contents, including the Saroops of Guru Grant Sahib Ji, were removed by the Indian Government before the Library was burnt. Despite a Punjab and Haryana High Court order in 2004, the Indian Government has failed to return the contents of the Library. Presenting a full journey compilation of the journey between Delhi and Amritsar from the Amritsar Swarn Shatabdi Express. This Shatabdi runs with IRY coaches and covers the 448 kilometre distance between New Delhi and Amritsar in 6 hours and 20 minutes, at an average speed of 70 kmph and a maximum permissible speed of 110 kmph, with 6 intermediate halts. It is possible the sole Shatabdi Express to ply with 3 AC Executive Chair Cars, in addition to about 13 AC Chair Cars.
This compilation covers the Shatabdi's rapid run through the plains of Haryana and Punjab. The Shatabdi maintains a fantastic pace as it zips through relatively large stations such as Panipat, Kurukshetra, Sirhind and Phillaur. The rapid pace of the Shatabdi can also be gauged from the fact that it outruns every single vehicle on the adjacent national highway.
Powered by a Ghaziabad WAP5, there are some high speed encounters on the way, notably with the WAP7 hauled Kalka Shatabdi, the WAP7 hauled Paschim Express, and the WDM3A hauled Amritsar Haridwar Jan Shatabdi.
Enroute Amritsar, we cross two of the five major rivers which gives Punjab its name: namely Sutlej after Ludhiana, and the Beas, midway between Jalandhar and Amritsar. The latter had a fair bit of water in it, making for a lovely sight. Another point of interest is the heavy industrialization of the Punjab, post Ambala. One hardly gets to see a non-permanent structure in the form of dwellings and a number of houses even in apparently rural areas are at least two stories high.
Minor correction: the individual at 16:27, described as a 'latent railfan' prefers to be classified as a 'curious sojourner'! :)

Amritsar, literally a Pool of Nectar, derives its name from Amrit Sarovar, the holy tank that surrounds the fabulous Golden Temple. First time visitors to Amritsar could be forgiven for the impression that Amritsar is like any other small town in northern India. But Amritsar stands head and shoulders above any other city, its status elevated and sanctified by the presence of the venerable Golden Temple.
Located in the heart of Amritsar, the temple complex is surrounded by a maze of narrow lanes, or katras, that house one of the busiest markets in India. But the Golden Temple is a serene presence, radiating a calm that makes people bow their heads in reverence. The gurudwara, as Sikh temples are called, is the holiest of Sikh shrines. It is not just Sikhs who travel to the Golden Temple to pay homage, the sacred shrine is equally revered by Hindus and people of other faiths who, too, make the pilgrimage to offer prayers at Harmandir Sahib.
There more to Amritsar than that - Amongst other sights is Jallianwala Bagh, site of the gruesome massacre of unarmed Indians by British troops. A major tourist attraction these days is the Indo-Pakistan border crossing at Wagah, just a short distance from Amritsar, with its elaborate change-of-guards drill with a lot of strutting and intimidatory showing off by both sides.
If you are 'doing' north India, Amritsar is a city you should not miss. It's easy to travel there from Delhi by road and by rail. It is easy to navigate through the city; few guides bother you as tourism is not the most important commercial activity here. Ask them in Amritsar, and they will tell you that if for nothing else you must travel here for the roadside chhola-bhaturas.
