David Grier is an American acoustic guitarist. He is considered to be one of the premier flatpicking guitarists in the world. His unique phrasing and his ability to create multiple variations on a theme are hallmarks of his playing style. He was named "Guitar Player of the Year" by the International Bluegrass Music Association three times (1992, 1993 and 1995).
Grier performs solo and as a member of the group Psychograss, founded by Darol Anger and Mike Marshall.
Grier grew up in a very musical household. Grier's father, Lamar, was a banjo player in Bluegrass legend Bill Monroe's band for a number of years.Roland White was a major musical influence on the young Grier, and helped him learn to play. Grier's guitar playing is also heavily influenced by that of Clarence White, Roland's brother.
Grier owns his father's 1955 Martin D-18. The D-18 was his main guitar for a number of years but is now "retired." He also played a Nashville Guitar Company dreadnought, built by renowned luthier Marty Lanham in Nashville, TN, the guitar was sold in 2009 with the music store Elderly Instruments. His current principal guitar is a Martin D-28 built in 1946.
David (/ˈdeɪvɪd/; Hebrew: דָּוִד, Modern David, Tiberian Dāwîḏ;ISO 259-3 Dawid; Arabic: داوُد Dāwūd; Syriac: ܕܘܝܕ Dawid; Ancient Greek: Δαυίδ; Latin: Davidus, David; Strong's: Daveed) was, according to the Books of Samuel, the second king of the United Kingdom of Israel, and according to the New Testament, an ancestor of Jesus. His life is conventionally dated to c. 1040 – 970 BCE, his reign over Judah c. 1010–970 BCE.
The Books of Samuel, 1 Kings, and 1 Chronicles are the only Old Testament sources of information on David, although the Tel Dan Stele (dated c. 850–835 BCE) contains the phrase בית דוד (bytdwd), read as "House of David", which many scholars confirm to be a likely plausible match to the existence in the mid-9th century BCE of a Judean royal dynasty called the House of David.
Depicted as a valorous warrior of great renown, and a poet and musician credited for composing much of the psalms contained in the Book of Psalms, King David is widely viewed as a righteous and effective king in battle and civil justice. He is described as a man after God's own heart in 1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22.
The Fretboard Journal is a keepsake magazine for guitar, mandolin, and stringed instrument players. In the same vein of other "coffee table magazines" such as Gastronomica, The Surfer's Journal, and the Rodder's Journal, it boasts high-end production values, lengthy interviews and exclusive photography in each issue. Each issue is filled with photos of rare instruments, well-known musicians, and even the workshops of instrument builders. The magazine is also available on the iPad.
The Fretboard Journal was founded by Michael Simmons, a veteran of musical instrument retail sales, and Jason Verlinde, a longtime music journalist. It is published out of Seattle, Washington. Years before, they collaborated on the Ukulele Occasional magazine, a small zine devoted to the four string instrument.
The first issue of the Fretboard Journal was unveiled in November 2005. Stories included an interview with mandolinist David Grisman, an interview with Charlie Louvin by Neko Case, and a profile of Santa Cruz Guitar Company. The second issue featured Case on the cover discussing tenor guitars, an article about Martin Guitars', history and an interview with mandolinist Andy Statman. Issues now come out every three months.
We were thrilled and humbled that flatpick wizard David Grier agreed to don the Magnet for a closeup look at his lauded playing technique. Even if the closest you've ever been to a "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" is a dead battery on the New York State Thruway, David's instantly identifiable voice on the guitar is a blend of traditional bluegrass and modern sounds that any fan of great writing and playing will appreciate. In our talk, he beguiled us with over an hour of his stunning crosspicking inventions and innovative harmonic twists and turns. The complete interview is coming soon to Masters in Mechanics: http://www.troygrady.com/mechanics/davidgrier
Go behind-the-scenes at the Fretboard Journal as we interview and hear music from flatpicking guitar legend David Grier. Grier was the cover story for the Fretboard Journal #16 and is widely considered one of the greatest acoustic guitarists alive today. Fretboard Journal publisher Jason Verlinde interviews Grier about his music-filled childhood (Grier's father Lamar performed was a banjo player for Bill Monroe in the '60s), the influence of Clarence White, his cross-picking technique and more. We also get Grier's thoughts about acoustic guitars, practicing and more. This is the pilot episode of Fretboard Journal Live, the FJ's new livestreaming interview series. Fretboard Journal favorite (and issue 16 cover story) David Grier stopped by our offices to perform a couple of flatpicking tunes for our cameras, including this version of “Soldier’s Joy.” Watch as Grier picks up steam and lets the notes fly… by around the 2:30 mark, our jaws were dropping. In early 2013, the always entertaining David Grier stopped by the Fretboard Journal offices to perform a few tunes. Along with some jokes, most of which we couldn't air, he played this great rendition of "Beaumont Rag." Grier has played a variety of guitars over the years. In this clip, he's playing a dreadnought built by Dake Traphagen in Bellingham, Washington. After performing the tune, he slows down his playing a bit and offers a tip or two for improving your own playing. Hope you enjoy! Grier was the cover story of the Fretboard Journal #16, still available via our website. In this clip from his Masters in Mechanics interview, David Grier rolls up his sleeve and proves once and for all there is neither rabbit nor ace of spades present. Instead, at the heart of his incredible crosspicking ability, is good old-fashioned wrist and forearm mechanics. David is a great sport in this and many other moments in his Masters in Mechanics interview, and we're honored to get such an up-close look at his abilities. People stand in line
People stand in line
People stand in line
A premonition of the killers angel eyes
An armageddon sky tell it like it is
It's like the old man says
We're dead in the water now
Dead in the water
They come from miles around
They come from miles around
They come from miles around
In avarice and love
To suckle on the blood
Of some forgotten god
Sell it like it is
It's like the old man says
We're dead in the water now
We're dead in the water now
Dead in the water
A simple act of faith
A simple act of faith
A simple act of faith
A celebration of the colour and the creed
The cancer and its seed
Crackles on the mic
Can call it what you like
We're dead in the water now
We're dead in the water now
