In today's lesson, we will be talking about good manners or what can also be referred to sometimes as cross-cultural skills. What does that mean? It's the skills that you need to function effectively in a different culture than your own. So for example: if I were to come to your country and learn your language, do you think that would be enough? Not really, because along with the language, I also need to learn what's acceptable, what's not okay in that particular culture. So today, we'll be talking about 12 things that you need to say and do when you're living or working in an English speaking environment. Okay? Let's get started. So first we'll talk about what you should say. The first one is using the word: "please". Now, everybody knows that you should say "please", but not everybody remembers to actually say it. So for example: if you go into a coffee shop, don't just say: "Coffee." Say: "Coffee, please." Or if you're asking someone else to do something, also remember: "Could you please turn off your cellphone?", for example. All right? Next: remember to say "thank you" whenever somebody does something. "Thank you", "You're welcome": these are phrases that we do use very often in English. And it could be for anything simple like somebody holding the door for you or it could be for something more elaborate like somebody giving you a birthday present. Okay? The way you say it, say it from your heart. Okay? "Thank you.", "Thank you very much." And so on. The next one is to say "sorry", or even better to say "I'm sorry", because "I'm sorry" is more personal. But otherwise, at least say "sorry". And again, you can say "sorry" for little things like perhaps stepping on someone's foot or if you bang into someone by mistake, you bump into someone by mistake somewhere in a crowded place, still apologize, say: "I'm sorry.", "I'm sorry.", "I'm sorry." Okay? We do use that quite often. Next one: "Excuse me." Now, "excuse me" you can say when you sneeze. Right? [Achoo!]. "Excuse me." Or if you need to ask somebody for some information, you can say: "Excuse me, would you know where the nearest subway is?" Right? So this is a very useful expression and it's also a polite expression. The next one is to remember to greet people and also to wish people. By greeting people, even at work if you're working in an English speaking environment, remember we do say "good morning", "good night", "happy birthday", "happy New Year", "congratulations". So greet people, and also wish them on the appropriate days. The next one might seem obvious also, but again, it's the way that you do it. Even if you work in an office, in the morning, we can say: "Hey, good morning. How are you?" And when you ask: "How are you?" even though you're not expected to give a full answer, but whatever answer someone gives you, remember to listen. Don't start talking right away. Wait to hear if the other person is saying: "Oh, pretty good. I'm fine. How are you?" Hear all of that before you start speaking about your own disposition, your own state of mind. Okay? Listen to the answer. All right? So these are six things that you must remember to do; they are taken for granted and they are expected of you. Next: let's look at what you should do. This seventh one here says: "Smile." Smiling creates a more friendly environment and it's certainly expected. So try to do that, again, it doesn't mean you have to keep smiling, but when you meet someone, give them a smile. If you don't smile, they might think that you're nervous, they might think you're angry or unhappy about something. Okay? Or they might take it a little bit aggressively. So try to smile, it makes the... It also gives people the message that everything is okay, not just that you're happy to meet them, but that everything is fine with you. So it says two things: something about you and something about the other person. Next: shake hands. Now, that's usually in a more business-like situation; in an office or somewhere, and certainly when you meet somebody for the first time. In an English speaking environment, you are expected to shake hands and shake hands rather firmly. Don't shake hands very weakly or just hold a part of the hand. Hold the entire hand and shake it firmly. All right? That's, again, part of the office expectation and the business norm.

So many people say that your body speaks much more loudly than your words speak and it's probably...It has quite a bit of truth. It's really important that as you speak you exhibit great body language. The most important aspects of your body language are, number one, your shoulders and where your shoulders are positioned as you speak to other people. So, your shoulders could be like this or they could be like this, and that slight change makes an enormous difference in what your body is saying about you. This little change could make me seem like I'm insecure or don't have much confidence, but moving my shoulders up changes the entire dynamic of how I'm coming across. Also, a really important part of your body language is your hands and what you're doing with your hands. Now, some people have a really hard time with what to do with their hands as they're speaking. If you have a hard time with it what I suggest is if you're sitting, just putting your hands in your lap or if you're standing just making sure that they're at your sides or folded in front of you. A lot of people have a hard time with playing with things, with playing with bracelets, with playing with hair, fumbling with their pockets. So, be aware as you speak next time of what your hands are doing. Where are your hands? Are they stationary? Or, you can ask someone else to make this assessment for you. Have a conversation with them and ask them to keep an eye on where your hands are during the conversation. Another important element of your body language is the fact that you need to be standing still, so if you're moving during a conversation that's going to give off the impression that you're nervous or that you're uncomfortable during the conversation. So, be sure that you're standing stationary and that you're not moving around as you're talking. And, your feet, as you're talking, you don't want to be moving your feet around or lifting up your knee or moving your feet around. You want to make sure that those are stationary as well. The whole idea is that you don't want to distract someone while they're speaking or while you're speaking. Not only is it distracting, but it can make you come across as insecure, less than confident, or even uncomfortable during a conversation. You definitely don't want to give off that impression. So, your body language speaks a great deal. You want to make sure that you have great body language as you're communicating and speaking with other people. It's probably one of the most important elements to making a good first impression.

Let's start from the beginning. If you happen to have a host or a hostess who is having a dinner or having you for a meal, you want to follow their lead. So, don't sit down until they sit down. Also, don't put your napkin in your lap until they put their napkin in their lap. Now, if we're just dining out at a restaurant, first thing you want to think about is getting yourself seated and putting your napkin in your lap. That's pretty much the first thing you want to do at any table setting. As you're interacting at the table, make sure that you don't put your elbows on the table. This is kind of a dining taboo. Basically if you have your elbows on the table that means that you're probably leaning over the table which you don't want to do. However you can rest your wrists on the table. So, if you're seated here you can rest you wrists like this. In terms of salt and pepper, if someone asks you to pass the salt, you should actually pass both the salt and the pepper together. They always move around the table as a pair. Have you ever sat down at a table and had a number of utensils in front of you and you're really nervous about which one you should use for which course? It's actually really simple. You start from the outside utensils and you move inward. So, the first thing that comes to you should be used with the outermost utensil. Let's say this was a salad. We're obviously going to be using this fork rather than this spoon. If this was a soup, we'd be using the spoon first. While you're at the table you might want to take a break from eating. So what you're going to want to do with your utensils is put them in what we call the resting position. So, you would take your utensils and put them like this. If the plate were a clock, this would actually be approximately on the eight. This knife would be approximately at the four. When you're finished with your meal, your utensils go in the finished position. This is where both utensils are approximately on a four if this were a clock. You want to be sure that the handles of your utensils are actually hanging off the back of your plate. This is just so that a server actually doesn't have to pick your utensils up off of a dirty plate. If you need to leave the table during the meal, you put your napkin on the chair. In a formal restaurant they're probably going to come by, re-fold your napkin, and put it back to the left of your plate. And when you're finished with your meal, you're going to want to put your napkin back to the left hand side of your plate. It doesn't belong on your plate. You don't want to get a cloth napkin dirty with food. It belongs right back where it started. Those are just a few of the do's and don'ts of table manners.
