In sociology, manners are the unenforced standards of conduct which demonstrate that a person is proper, polite, and refined. They are like laws in that they codify or set a standard for human behavior, but they are unlike laws in that there is no formal system for punishing transgressions, the main informal "punishment" being social disapproval. They are a kind of norm. What is considered "mannerly" is highly susceptible to change with time, geographical location, social stratum, occasion, and other factors. That manners matter is evidenced by the fact that large books have been written on the subject, advice columns frequently deal with questions of mannerly behavior, and that schools have existed for the sole purpose of teaching manners. A lady is a term frequently used for a woman who follows proper manners; the term gentleman is used as a male counterpart; though these terms are also often used for members of a particular social class.

Plot: War veteran Rick Dadier is one of three new teachers hired at North Manual High School, an inner city boys school. This is his first teaching assignment, which he needs to support himself and his insecure pregnant wife, Anne. Despite Principle Warnecke's assertions to the contrary, Dadier quickly learns that the rumors of student discipline problems at the school are indeed true. The established teachers at the school try to counsel the newcomers, all inexperienced in such situations, as how best to handle the rowdy students. Regardless, Dadier tries to exert discipline in his class, which provokes a violent response. Dadier believes the student leaders against him are Artie West, but more specifically Gregory Miller, who he thinks uses the fact of being black as a means of racial provocation. Dadier has to decide either to leave and teach at a "real" school, or stay and figure out how to get through to his students. If he decides to stay, he has to figure out who the real disruptive influences are, especially as they have resorted to attacks of a personal nature that affect especially Anne.

Plot: In a racially mixed American town, a 5-year-old black girl falls unnoticed into a hidden, forgotten well on her way to school. Having nothing better to go on, the police follow up a report that the child was seen with a white stranger, and rumors run wild. Before hapless, innocent Claude Packard is even found, popular hysteria has him tried and convicted. But Packard's troubles pale by comparison as ever more inflated rumors uncap the well of racial tensions and mob violence. And young Carolyn Crawford, forgotten by most, is still missing...

Plot: Over the objections of her father (Henry B. Wathall) Doris Maynard (Barbara Kent) elopes with family chauffeur Dan Simmons (Eddie Phillips). Simmons pawns her jewels, forges her father's name on a bank note and leaves Doris a note to go home and let her father support her. A year or two later, Doris meets and falls in love with and marries Donald Thorne (Monte Blue), a crusading district attorney. Her father advises her to let the past remain buried and unrevealed. A campaign for re-election is on and Thorne has the machine organization in despair. Denman (Dewey Robinson), the machine head, is desperate and gets hold of Manners (William V. Mong), a former butler in Thorne's home who had been fired by Doris for petty theft. Manners agrees to plant some manufactured evidence in Thorne's home to discredit him. Manners, with Thorne out of town and the servants off, has no problem entering the Thorne residence. Neither does Simmons who breaks in upstairs with intentions of blackmailing Doris about her past. Downstairs, Manners is placing the framed evidence in a secret drawer of the library table when he discovers a gun that Thorne had given Doris for protection. He hears voices upstairs, investigates and overhears Simmons making his blackmail demands of Doris. She gives him her money and jewels and he departs, followed by Manners, who kills Simmons and throws the gun in the bushes. An investigation, spurred by Denman, reveals the murdered man was Mrs. Donald Thorne's unrevealed ex-husband and the murder weapon the gun Thorne had left for Doris' protection. None of this information bodes well for Thorne's re-election campaign.
