Who We Are
Lancashire Secular Humanists provide a forum for people of Lancashire to meet and discuss social, political, religious, philosophical, scientific and artistic issues.
LSH is a partner group of the British Humanist Association, which represents the interests of ethically-concerned but non-religious people; and the National Secular Society, which challenges religious privilege and promotes separation of church and state.
What We Believe
We make our decisions using available evidence and by assessing the outcomes of our actions, not on any dogma or sacred text. We do not believe that morality depends on religion but on the contrary that it is an essentially human construct. On certain individual issues humanists may not agree, but we are committed to human rights, democracy and equality. Lancashire Secular Humanists, together with the British Humanist Association and the National Secular Society works for freedom of expression and an open and inclusive society.
If that sounds alarmingly solemn we find that our meetings often generate a good deal of laughter. We believe that pleasure, provided it does not depend on cruelty or exploitation, is an essential aspect of life. Robert Ingersoll, an American Freethinker of the 19th century said that the purpose of life is to be happy, and the way to be happy is to make other people happy.
