Plot: Before there was Pirates of the Caribbean, there was Treasure Island. Critics hail it as the most famous pirate story in history. Since its publication over a century ago, Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island popularized the most potent symbols of pirate lore: swashbuckling seamen, uncharted tropical islands and dog-eared treasure maps marked with an 'X'. And now, it appears that the novel may have been inspired by a real treasure - on an island no one has ever searched - until now. The Real Treasure Island follows Alex Capus as he travels to exotic locales to unlock the true story behind a literary masterpiece. From the foggy Scottish Highlands to the sun-kissed islands of the South Pacific, Capus follows a treasure trail of clues -each one triggering dramatic recreations that tell the true story behind Stevenson's tale.

Plot: "Into California's 1880 frontier country rides Robert Louis Stevenson ('Edgar Barrier' (qv)), the novelist, looking for story material 'in a land of stage-drivers and highwaymen', and soon finds it when Bill Foss ('William Bishop(I)') arrives in the mining town of Silverado with a new stagecoach." Foss barely breaks the city limits before he is challenged to a race by Zeke Butler ('Forrest Tucker' (qv)) , stage driver for the town's established stage-line operated by Jeannie Manning ('Gloria Henry' (qv)). During the race, Foss's coach is forced off the road and his best team-horse is injured. Doctor Henderson ('Edgar Buchanan' (qv)), noted for his philanthropies to the local miners, advises Foss he can't run his horse for some time to come, and Foss takes a job with Jeannie, hauling water to Squatter's Flats, a desert waste which requires irrigation. Later, Zeke, carrying gold from Last Dog Ditch Mine to Silverado is robbed by a mysterious bandit called The Monk,and he suspects Foss. To clear himself, Foss suggests both stages take the next gold shipment and see who gets robbed and who doesn't. This strikes all-concerned as a good idea. But it turns out otherwise.

Kidnapped by Robert Louis STEVENSON (1850 - 1894). Unabridged audiobook.
David Balfour, a lad of seventeen and newly orphaned, is directed to go and live with his rich uncle, the master of the estate of Shaws in the lowlands of Scotland near Edinburgh. His uncle, Ebenezer (as close a miser as Dickens' Ebenezer Scrooge), is shocked to suddenly have his young relative descend on him and tries to rid himself of David with an arranged accident. Failing that, he pays the captain of a brig to kidnap David and sell him into slavery in Carolina.
A collision in the fog brings onboard the brig a survivor, Alan Breck Stewart, who is carrying a dangerous amount of gold on his person. David warns him of a plan by the brig's captain and crew to overpower him and seize the money, and then finds himself fighting alongside Alan in a battle royale.
By good fortune, Alan is handy with a sword and they have access to the firearms locker, and the pair so completely defeat the crew that barely enough hands remain to sail her. Limping to port, she is holed by rocks, and David finds himself a castaway. Being in Alan's presence continues to be a chancey business. David is talking to Colin Roy Campbell, the King's Factor who has been oppressing Alan's people, when the man is shot to death, and David is chased as an accomplice. The two "take to the heather" and barely survive near brushes with redcoats as they thread through the Trossachs and other highland ranges of Scotland.
Only after an arduous weeks-long trek through territory where they are actively hunted do they emerge in the more settled districts around the river Forth, only to find guards upon the bridge. With no money remaining, they must somehow cross to Queensferry, find Ebenezer's lawyer, and lay claim to David's inheritance in order to send Alan safely on to France.

Treasure Island - FULL Audio Book by Robert Louis Stevenson - Adventure / Pirate Fiction - Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, narrating a tale of "buccaneers and buried gold". First published as a book on May 23, 1883, it was originally serialized in the children's magazine Young Folks between 1881--82 under the title Treasure Island or, the mutiny of the Hispaniola with Stevenson adopting the pseudonym Captain George North.
Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, Treasure Island is an adventure tale known for its atmosphere, characters and action, and also as a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality — as seen in Long John Silver — unusual for children's literature now and then. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perceptions of pirates is enormous, including treasure maps marked with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen carrying parrots on their shoulders. Robert Louis Stevenson - Der Selbstmordklub

Robert Louis Stevenson - Der Selbstmordklub

Do We Lead Double Lives? #JekyllHyde
One hundred fifty years ago it was more important to act appropriately than to act sincerely. Victorians were comfortable with people leading double lives, as long as those lives were kept separate. Work, family and especially any bad habits were seen as different worlds, not only as parts of one individual. Twitter, Facebook and other social media tempt us to

At the art fair Art Stage Singapore 2014, Gallery Hirota Fine Art is participating with a solo show with works by the Japanese artist Hiroaki Kano. The works on display are works that are inspired by Japanese country lore and deal with the relationship between people and the weather. In this video, Hiroaki Kano talks about two of the artworks, a painting and an installation based on the weather box, invented by the father of author Robert Louis Stevenson.
More info: http://vernissage.tv/blog/2014/01/18/interview-with-hiroaki-kano-at-gallery-hirota-fine-art-art-stage-singapore-2014/
Hiroaki Kano was born in Yamagata, Japan, in 1983. He graduated from Art specialized study course at Tsukuba University. "I create artwork depicting landscapes from actual places where I have collected data. I often reconfigure motifs that are connected with differing places and contexts; conceiving a world that has a certain sense of unrest in the air. I may be acting as a filter that reflects the real world, or perhaps I am simply rendering the fundamental madness and anxiety lurking in our everyday lives. I hope that my work is seen as a depiction of the common sensations that anyone can perceive in the world around them." (Hiroaki Kano)
Gallery Hirota Fine Art is based in Tokyo, Japan. The gallery was founded in 1969 and has its focus on Japanese painting.

JOHN MCAFEE – “Pandora’s Box Has Been Opened.”
John McAfee has a warning for us all: “Privacy and security are essential to a sane society.”
He has learned this through an extensive work history as a programmer, software designer and consultant with employers such as NASA, Univac, Xerox and Lockheed; he founded anti-virus company McAfee Associates after coming across the Pakistani Brain Virus while at Lockheed, and more recently worked in the field of bacterial quorum sensing and creating more secure computer networks.
Described as visionary, outrageous, and out of his mind. He was recently called by Silicon Valley Metro, "Unconventional, Risk Taking … Sometimes Crazy, Spirit of Silicon Valley.” John brought his visionary thinking to the 2014 Digital Media Summit on May 7, during Canadian Music Week.
Along with the baggage of his sometimes-notorious private life, he appeared via Skype, from an “undisclosed location”, interviewed by Ted Cohen, a prominent and important digital entertainment industry executive, with experience in senior management at Warner Bros Records and elsewhere.
John’s cloak and dagger approach was appropriate - he said - because of “the culture of technology that owns us.” With Ted they succinctly discussed the idea that “privacy is a choice”, that we currently live in a 1984-ish Orwellian world times one thousand.
From his on-screen digital pulpit, John sermonized that: “… there are no more corners to hide in … all of our personal information is in the public domain”, and “as a society we have to take responsibility for our own privacy and security.”
Ted elicited opinions from John on people like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, and the names of John’s own personal heroes. Asked how he’d like to be remembered in 30 years, John replied with Robert Louis Stevenson’s epitaph: “Here he lies where he wanted to be, Home is the Hunter, home from the Sea.”
Who knows where this international man of mystery will show up next? One thing for sure, you won’t be able to track him through his phone.

From a Railway Carriage
by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850--1894)
FASTER than fairies, faster than witches,
Bridges and houses, hedges and ditches;
And charging along like troops in a battle,
All through the meadows the horses and cattle:
All of the sights of the hill and the plain 5
Fly as thick as driving rain;
And ever again, in the wink of an eye,
Painted stations whistle by.
Here is a child who clambers and scrambles,
All by himself and gathering brambles; 10
Here is a tramp who stands and gazes;
And there is the green for stringing the daisies!
Here is a cart run away in the road
Lumping along with man and load;
And here is a mill and there is a river: 15
Each a glimpse and gone for ever!

Twitter, Facebook and other social media tempt us to create alternative identities for ourselves, but as Robert Louis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll found out, becoming Mr. Hyde is dangerous as well as exciting. Elizabeth Richmond-Garza sets a gothic mood by traveling to Jack the Ripper's London, which was not as different from today as you might think.
