Masdar City is a project in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. Its core is a planned city, which is being built by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, a subsidiary of Mubadala Development Company, with the majority of seed capital provided by the government of Abu Dhabi. Designed by the British architectural firm Foster and Partners, the city will rely entirely on solar energy and other renewable energy sources, with a sustainable, zero-carbon, zero-waste ecology.

With an 8 hour layover in Abu Dhabi, I wanted to get out of the airport and see something. I didn't have a lot of time to explore the city and the Grand Mosque was closed on a Friday so I decided to visit the nearby Masdar City - a carbon free, renewable energy city that also houses and institute for research and green energy exploration.
Here's a quick look at the lithium battery powered, unmanned pods that drive you around.

Le projet confié par l'Emirat d'Abu Dhabi à Norman Foster relève du défi : le cabinet du célèbre architecte a pour mission d'ériger, au beau milieu du golfe persique, une ville écologique modèle de six millions de mètres carrés, capable d'accueillir 50 000 personnes. Le budget dédié à ce vaste projet, entamé en 2008, est lui aussi pharaonique : il s'élève à 10 milliards de dollars. Baptisée Masdar, cette cité verte doit permettre au pays de l'or noir de préparer l'après-pétrole. Cette transition vers l'indépendance énergétique passe par la construction de la plus grande ferme photovoltaïque au monde et la conception d'un système de recyclage de l'eau ultrasophistiqué. Pas à pas, retour sur la naissance de cette cité du futur, jusqu'à l'ouverture de l'université, du métro et du parc de voitures électriques.

Abu Dhabi, la ville des Émirats figurant parmi les premiers exportateurs de pétrole a décidé de penser un peu plus à l’environnement en investissant pas moins de 15 milliards de dollars dans le projet de ville 100 % écologique baptisée Masdar. Signifiant la source en Arabe, Masdar sera la première ville à utiliser de l’énergie renouvelable et à ne diffuser aucune pollution dans l’environnement. Un projet de grande envergure qui se veut être un modèle pour les autres pays du monde. Masdar va s’implanter au cœur du désert, mais non loin de l’aéroport international d’Abu Dhabi.
Les concepteurs de la ville visent très loin avec ce projet, puisqu’ils comptent bien faire de Masdar une ville qui n’émet ni carbone, ni déchets, ni pollution. Plus encore, les voitures n’y seront pas admises. Cette ville du futur prévoit d’héberger jusqu’à 50 000 habitants en 2015. En tout cas, les promoteurs de Masdar comptent bien finir ce projet à temps et les travaux avancent déjà, car les premières pierres étaient déjà posées en 2008 . Les architectes britanniques Foster and Partners ont eu le privilège de dessiner l’architecture et le design de la ville en général.

Personal rapid transit (PRT), also called podcar, is a public transportation mode featuring small automated vehicles operating on a network of specially built guide ways. PRT is a type of automated guideway transit (AGT), a class of system which also includes larger vehicles all the way to small subway systems.
In PRT designs, vehicles are sized for individual or small group travel, typically carrying no more than 3 to 6 passengers per vehicle. Guide ways are arranged in a network topology, with all stations located on sidings, and with frequent merge/diverge points. This approach allows for nonstop, point-to-point travel, bypassing all intermediate stations. The point-to-point service has been compared to a taxi or a horizontal lift (elevator).
PRT was a major area of study in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1975, Morgantown PRT, an experimental automated system which exhibits some (but not all) features of PRT, was opened to the public after significant construction cost overruns. Morgantown PRT remains in use today, and there have been discussions on expanding it.

Personal Rapid Transit and Masdar City PRT
Scientists have been developing Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) technology decades. It has diverse applications ranging from moving cargo at airports to transporting people on campuses and in cities.
