Die Rhapsody in Blue ist eine der bekanntesten Kompositionen des US-amerikanischen Broadwaykomponisten George Gershwin. Das Stück wurde erstmals am 12. Februar 1924 in der Aeolian Hall in New York aufgeführt. Angekündigt wurde das Konzert unter dem Titel An Experiment in Modern Music. Bei der Uraufführung saß Gershwin selbst am Klavier. A pupil of Pugno and Petri, Ernst Levy (1895-1981 Switzerland) was not only a master pianist, but also a conductor of both choral and instrumental music (he conducted the premiere Paris performance of the Brahms Requiem in 1935) and was a composer of 15 symphonies among many other compositions. His interests and studies included the sciences,literature and architecture. Levy brought all of these disciplines together in his interpretations of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt et .al. .Levy had very definite ideas about the interpretation of the music that he performed and frequently his performances don't sound like "the way they are supposed to be played." Levy wrote, "there are those who understand and those that do not understand." Levy taught at the New England Conservatory of Music and other institutions of higher learning in the United States from 1941 until 1966. Upon his retirement, he returned to Switzerland where he died in 1981.

From the LP shown above, issued in 1954. The recording you hear was made in 1947. Artur Rubinstein is soloist; Walter Susskind leads the Philharmonia Orchestra. Note: Rubinstein hits a wrong note at the start of variation 19 (at about 16:37). I would be interested to know if this error, for which at the time of this recording there was no technology to correct, has been edited in more recently produced CD versions of this performance. Рапсодия на тему Паганини ля минор, opus 43 — произведение Сергея Рахманинова для фортепиано с оркестром. Рахманинов работал над этим сочинением на вилле Сенар (близ Веггиса в Швейцарии) с 3 июля по 18 августа 1934 года. Премьера состоялась в Lyric Opera House в Балтиморе 7 ноября 1934 г., партию фортепиано исполнил автор в сопровождении Филадельфийского оркестра под управлением Леопольда Стоковского. В этой музыке ностальгия соединяется с откровенной «дьявольщиной». Недаром Рахманинов включил в нее мотив «Dies irae». Премьерное исполнение было записано. Среди других знаменитых исполнителей, записавших Рапсодию, — Артур Рубинштейн, Владимир Ашкенази, Вэн Клайберн. Der russische Komponist Sergei Rachmaninow schrieb seine Rhapsodie über ein Thema von Paganini im Sommer des Jahres 1934 innerhalb weniger Wochen in seiner Residenz bei Luzern. Sein Opus 43 wurde am 7. November 1934 in Baltimore mit Rachmaninow am Flügel und dem Philadelphia Orchestra unter Leopold Stokowski uraufgeführt. Etwa zehn Jahre zuvor hatte Rachmaninow die Uraufführung von George Gershwins (1898-1937) „Rhapsody in Blue" am 12. Februar 1924 in New York organisiert und dieser beigewohnt. Vergleicht man nun Besetzung (Klavierkonzert), Spieldauer (ca. 15 min bei Gershwin, ca. 20 min bei Rachmaninow) und Titel („Rhapsodie") beider Werke - und macht man sich die leicht an Jazz erinnernde X. Dies irae-Variation bei Rachmaninow bewusst -, so könnte man auf den Gedanken kommen, Rachmaninow hätte sich vielleicht durch seinen jüngeren Kollegen etwas inspirieren lassen (zumal Rachmaninow eine Leidenschaft für Jazz hegte). A Rapsódia Sobre um Tema de Paganini (em russo: Рапсодия на тему Паганини) em lá menor, opus 43, é um trabalho concertante, com duração média de 20 a 25 minutos, escrito pelo compositor russo Sergei Rachmaninoff. A obra foi escrita para piano e orquestra, lembrando um concerto para piano, em Villa Senar, Suíça, de acordo com anotação na partitura, de 3 de Julho a 18 de Agosto de 1934. O próprio Rachmaninoff, notavelmente um intérprete dos próprios trabalhos, tocou piano na estréia da peça na Lyric Opera House em Baltimore, Maryland, EUA, em 7 de Novembro de 1934 com a Orquestra da Filadélfia regida pelo maestro Leopold Stokowski. A recording (extremely rare) issued in 1954 on the Royale record label (a subsidiary of the Recording Corporation of America). The identity of neither the pianist nor the conductor is known. A pupil of Pugno and Petri, Ernst Levy (1895-1981 Switzerland) was not only a master pianist, but also a conductor of both choral and instrumental music (he conducted the premiere Paris performance of the Brahms Requiem in 1935) and was a composer of 15 symphonies among many other compositions. His interests and studies included the sciences,literature and architecture. Levy brought all of these disciplines together in his interpretations of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt et .al. .Levy had very definite ideas about the interpretation of the music that he performed and frequently his performances don't sound like "the way they are supposed to be played." Die Rhapsody in Blue ist eine der bekanntesten Kompositionen des US-amerikanischen Broadwaykomponisten George Gershwin. Das Stück wurde erstmals am 12. Februar 1924 in der Aeolian Hall in New York aufgeführt. Angekündigt wurde das Konzert unter dem Titel An Experiment in Modern Music. Bei der Uraufführung saß Gershwin selbst am Klavier. Die Rhapsody in Blue ist ein Versuch, die gegensätzlichen Musikstile Jazz und Klassik zu verbinden. A pupil of Pugno and Petri, Ernst Levy (1895-1981 Switzerland) was not only a master pianist, but also a conductor of both choral and instrumental music (he conducted the premiere Paris performance of the Brahms Requiem in 1935) and was a composer of 15 symphonies among many other compositions. His interests and studies included the sciences,literature and architecture. Levy brought all of these disciplines together in his interpretations of the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt et .al. .Levy had very definite ideas about the interpretation of the music that he performed and frequently his performances don't sound like "the way they are supposed to be played." Levy wrote, "there are those who understand and those that do not understand." Levy taught at the New England Conservatory of Music and other institutions of higher learning in the United States from 1941 until 1966. Upon his retirement, he returned to Switzerland where he died in 1981.

Vergleicht man nun Besetzung (Klavierkonzert), Spieldauer (ca. 15 min bei Gershwin, ca. 20 min bei Rachmaninow) und Titel („Rhapsodie") beider Werke - und macht man sich die leicht an Jazz erinnernde X. This year (2013) we honor the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of America’s most prolific composer and arrangers Clare Grundman. It is sad to note that very little has been written about him despite the fact that nearly every band musician in America and Canada has had the privilege of playing his wonderful compositions and band libraries across North America are filled with his magnificent music for band.
He was born on May 11, 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio. In his adolescent years, Clare participated in the Shaw High School Band in East Cleveland where he played clarinet. Following his high school graduation, Clare pursued his interest of science at The Ohio State University where he completed his bachelor of science in education degree in 1934. While in his undergrad at Ohio State University, Clare continued playing clarinet, while also learning the saxophone. He gained experience performed in an orchestra performing on trans-Atlantic passenger ships such as the French Line SS Normandie.. He soon became an instrumental music teacher where he taught for three years in Ohio and Lexington, KY.
Preceding his music teacher status, Grundman returned to Ohio State University to pursue his new interest of the arts and earned his master of the arts in 1939.and studied with Paul Hindemith. Grundman became the assistant director of bands at Ohio State University and taught both orchestration and woodwinds. Three years later, World War II began and Grundman served his country as chief musician in The United States Coast Guard band leaving his position at Ohio State as assistant director of bands in 1941.
After the war he concentrated on composition and received many awards for his efforts in radio, television, motion pictures, ballet and Broadway. Grundman’s hard work and participation in many ensembles led him to be honored by each of the primary professional band organizations including The American Bandmasters Association, awarding him the Edwin Franko Memorial Citation, the American School Band Directors Association presenting Grundman with the Kappa Kappa Psi Distinguished Service Award, The John Philip Sousa Foundation awarding the Diploma of the Sudler Order of Merit and a highly respected honorary member of the Women Band Director National Association, currently known as Women Band Directors International in 1974. Not ten years later, Grundman was awarded one of the most prestigious awards, given by the National Band Association, the AWAPA (Academy of Wind and Percussion Arts). Last but certainly not the least; Clare Grundman was elected to membership in the American Bandmasters Association in 1985.
Grundman was an intelligent musician whose passion for music drove him to compose both original and arranged works for several ensembles including symphony orchestra, Broadway musicals, ballet, radio, television, motion pictures and concert bands. Clare Grundman is one of the most influential composers of band and wind ensemble repertoire, with works dating from the 1940s. As a skilled orchestrator and gifted composer, he took a special interest in creating music for school ensembles, and remains one of the most performed band composers today.
This collection spans more than four decades of his creative output and includes Kentucky 1800, An Irish Rhapsody, Concord, Little Suite for Band, Fantasy on American Sailing Songs, Hebrides Suite, American Folk Rhapsody No. 1, American Folk Rhapsody No. 2, Little English Suite, The Blue and the Gray, and Two Moods.

Harvey Lavan "Van" Cliburn, Jr., (July 12, 1934 -- February 27, 2013) has been called an American hero, hailed as one of the most persuasive ambassadors of American culture as well as one of the greatest pianists in the history of music. With his historic 1958 victory in the first Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow at the height of the Cold War, Van Cliburn tore down cultural barriers years ahead of glasnost and perestroika, reaching out across political frontiers with a universal message all could greet with joy: the message of beautiful music.
Cliburn was the first musician ever honored with a ticker-tape parade in New York City, a true hero's welcome and a show of gratitude for an American victory on the heels of the Soviet Union's launching of Sputnik. Again reaching across cultural borders, Cliburn invited the Russian conductor Kirill Kondrashin to come to New York and reprise the performances that had earned the young American the gold medal in Moscow. Cliburn's recording of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 with Kondrashin became the first classical album to reach platinum status and has gone on to sell more than three million copies
The legendary Emil Gilels, one of the judges who awarded Cliburn the top prize in Moscow in 1958, said at the time "his inborn artistry and subtle musicianship ennoble all that he plays. His victory at such a difficult contest may be truly termed brilliant.'' A few years later, in his classic study of the world's great pianists, Harold C. Schoenberg noted that "of all the Americans of his generation, Cliburn was able to produce the most sensuous of sounds ... rich, never percussive, a real piano sound that reminded old-timers of the great romantic pianists of the past.''
Van Cliburn was born in Louisiana on July 12, 1934, the son of Harvey Lavan Cliburn and Rildia Bee O'Bryan Cliburn. The family moved to Texas when the boy was only six, and by 12 the prodigy had won every major local piano competition. His Carnegie Hall debut in 1954, playing the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 under Dmitri Mitropolous' baton, offered the music world a preview of what would become his signature piece and the occasion of his Moscow victory four years later.
Cliburn's ties to the grand romantic school of piano were close from the start of his career: His only teacher for the first 17 years of his life was his indomitable mother, herself a pupil of Arthur Friedheim, who was a pupil of Franz Liszt. Later, at the Juilliard School, the young pianist studied at his mother's urging with the acclaimed Russian pedagogue Rosina Lhevinne. "Van was so teachable,'' recalled a proud Mrs. Cliburn in 1958, "and always so respectful and quick to learn.''
He learned fast, and his love and respect for great music only grew. Tours all over the world followed his Tchaikovsky Competition triumph, a growing series of definitive recordings added to his popularity, and even a decade-long sabbatical from public performances only increased the disarming directness of his romantic touch when he returned to the concert circuit in 1987. In honor of Cliburn's return to the concert stage, the eight-disc Van Cliburn Collection was released on the RCA Victor label, containing many of Cliburn's classic concerto recordings: Tchaikovsky Concerto No. 1; Rachmaninoff Concertos Nos. 2 and 3; Prokofiev Concerto No. 3; Brahms' Concerto No. 2; and Rachmaninoff's "Variations on a Theme of Paganini." His current touring schedule includes performances across the country from Tanglewood to Thousand Oaks, California.
Cliburn has performed for royalty, heads of state in Europe, Asia, and South America and for every President of the United States since Harry Truman.
Cliburn's selfless devotion to music has been expressed in other ways as well. At the height of his early career, Cliburn made time to encourage and nourish young talent with the first Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. First held in 1962, this competition is held in Fort Worth every four years. It is an integral part of Cliburn's living legacy, a bright and hopeful signpost for the future of American music.

Using a large ensemble and exploring many styles of music, Whiteman is perhaps best known for his blending of symphonic music and jazz, as typified by his 1924 commissioning and debut of George Gershwin's jazz-influenced "Rhapsody in Blue". Later, Whiteman's work on Symphonic Jazz influenced many jazz musicians either way - directly or indirectly - as diverse as Miles Davis, Gil Evans, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Wynton Marsalis and other modern artists. Whiteman recorded many jazz and pop standards during his career, including "Wang Wang Blues", "Mississippi Mud", "Rhapsody in Blue", "Wonderful One", "Hot Lips (He's Got Hot Lips When He Plays Jazz)", "Mississippi Suite", and "Grand Canyon Suite". Whiteman's place in the history of early jazz is somewhat controversial. Detractors suggest that Whiteman's ornately-orchestrated music was jazz in name only (lacking the genre's improvisational and emotional depth), and co-opted the innovations of black musicians. Defenders note that Whiteman's fondness for jazz was genuine (he worked with black musicians as much as was feasible during an era of racial segregation), that his bands included many of the era's most esteemed white jazz musicians, and argue that Whiteman's groups handled jazz admirably as part of a larger repertoire. In his autobiography, Duke Ellington declared, "Paul Whiteman was known as the King of Jazz, and no one as yet has come near carrying that title with more certainty and dignity."
Whiteman became the most popular band director of the 1920s. In a time when most dance bands consisted of six to 10 men, Whiteman directed a much larger and more imposing group of up to 35 musicians. By 1922, Whiteman already controlled some 28 ensembles on the east coast and was earning over a $1,000,000 a year.
In May 1928 Whiteman signed with Columbia Records, and recorded for the label until September 1931, when he returned to RCA Victor. He would remain with Victor until March 1937.

Die Kammersymphonie (1954), als das letzte Werk des Meisters, gewissermaßen sein künstlerisches Vermächtnis, lässt eine vielgestaltige, konvulsiv bewegte Landschaft vor uns erstehen. Diese Komposition ist die Frucht einer während eines langen und reich erfüllten Lebens gesammelten musikalischen und menschlichen Erfahrung; sie stellt sich dar als die Summe von Enescus wesenseigener Musikalität. Das Werk besteht aus vier Sätzen, von denen die letzten drei übergangslos aufeinander folgen. Es gründet also auf einer überaus breit angelegten Sonatenform, der sich ein Scherzo als Thema mit Variationen und eine lange, von der Solotrompete getragene pathetische Klage einfügen. Die zweite Hälfte des Finales ist eine natürlich veränderte, aber doch unverkennbare Reprise des im ersten Satz gebotenen thematischen Materials. Im Grunde ist die Musik dieses Komponisten für uns deshalb so schwer zugänglich, weil es eines ganz erheblichen Aufwands an Gedächtnisleistung bedarf, um dem immer wechselnden und stets bedeutungsreichen melodischen Ablauf zu folgen. Schliesslich aber entschädigt Enescus Musik für alle Mühe durch das bei wiederholtem Anhören steigende Wohlgefallen, ohne dabei an Tiefe und Geheimnis zu verlieren. Die Kammersymphonie ist ein lang ausgesponnenes und packendes Bekenntnis von erstaunlich komplexem Aufbau.

Die Kammersymphonie (1954), als das letzte Werk des Meisters, gewissermaßen sein künstlerisches Vermächtnis, lässt eine vielgestaltige, konvulsiv bewegte Landschaft vor uns erstehen. Diese Komposition ist die Frucht einer während eines langen und reich erfüllten Lebens gesammelten musikalischen und menschlichen Erfahrung; sie stellt sich dar als die Summe von Enescus wesenseigener Musikalität. Das Werk besteht aus vier Sätzen, von denen die letzten drei übergangslos aufeinander folgen. Es gründet also auf einer überaus breit angelegten Sonatenform, der sich ein Scherzo als Thema mit Variationen und eine lange, von der Solotrompete getragene pathetische Klage einfügen. Die zweite Hälfte des Finales ist eine natürlich veränderte, aber doch unverkennbare Reprise des im ersten Satz gebotenen thematischen Materials.
