A Syrian fighter jet has been downed Tuesday near Aleppo.

Militants have downed a Syrian Air Force warplane to the south of Aleppo, according to the source.

A representative of the command of the Syrian Armed Forces confirmed to RIA Novosti that a Su-22 warplane had been downed in Aleppo.

"The Syrian Air Force plane was shot down by militants in the Aleppo province during a combat mission. At the moment, we are trying to find out the fate of the pilot," the Syrian military told RIA Novosti.

According to state TV, the pilot of the Su-22 pilot ejected. According to local TV, the warplane, which was believed to be on a reconnaissance mission, was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

Reuters cited a watchdog and a Syrian rebel source as saying that the pilot of the Su-22 was captured by al-Nusra Front terrorists.

"Militants have downed a warplane, which had been on a combat duty in the province of Aleppo. It was based at the Shairat airbase," a source told RIA Novosti earlier in the day.

The Russian Defense Ministry said that aircraft of the Russian air group in Syria have not been carrying out operations in the area, where a fighter jet had been downed.

"Russian Aerospace Forces aviation did not conduct any operations in Aleppo and its outskirts," Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Tuesday.

A ceasefire regime in Syria backed by Russia and the United States came into force on February 27. It was supported by Damascus, as well as by dozens of opposition groups on the ground. Daesh and al-Nusra Front terror groups are not part of the deal.

On Saturday, the Russian reconciliation center stated that al-Nusra Front terrorist group has gained control over groups opposing the Syrian government in several districts of the Aleppo province.

Aleppo, the largest city in Syria, was attacked by Daesh and al-Nusra Front terrorist groups in 2012. Since then, Syrian government forces have been fighting for the city.

Goodness me, Syria urgently needs better models than 1990 or earlier produced. This SU-22 was first introduced 1970 and since then till today technology did some steps forward. Beside that these aircrafts are very much outdated with electronics as well as missile protection. I have no words but pure admiration for these Syrian pilots flying these jets. Hope pilot is ok and that SAA and their allays will now flatten the area from where missile was fired. I would suggest area of destruction about 10 km in radius. These USA paid imbeciles needs to be mercilessly exterminated.

My best wishes to heroic SAA and their allays and friends including Russia.

It´s not about the origin, age of the plane or the model. Syrian pilots know these planes like their own pockets and can perform miracles and stunning aerobatics with them, plus they also work perfect for these tasks in their Syrian conditions, much better than, say Mig 29.

NO IT`S ABOUT SAUDI BARBARIA AND TURKEY with US consent making good of their threats to arm their medieval mercenaries with Stingers. That´s what it´s about. These two medieval pariah states has to be stopped now.

    You are 100% right Mikhas

May this pilot be alive, may he come back to his family.

MAY THE PILOT be safe and NOT have been captured -- and if he was -- we should all wish that he survive and they don't harm him.

and that he returns to his family soon.

I HOPE the syrians and russia PUNISH these terrorists even more.

Sadly, the heroic fighter pilot was caught by the Saudi/Turk mercenaries of the "Nusra" variety, look at these monsters:

A martyr in the making since the Turkish filth take no prisoners. Let´s hope our dear lord sees to it that he wont suffer as much as they when Russia flatten their camp with thermobaric bombs tonight.

Nuking those "islamists" is becoming a necessity, let's vaporize those barbarians

If saudis and company have provided such weapons to these animals, russian intelligence should confirm it and have special forces go in and take them out.

Mikhas, My thoughts also. And this game of "legitimate opposition" has to end also. NATO is using the "legitimate" groups just as they would use "buffer zones". The terrorists retreat to those areas when desired, and the area becomes hot again. Armed groups need to release territory to the government or the government needs to take it back. Syria can't survive with all of these non-government forces releasing or losing territory to terrorists.

It goes back again to the fact that there are no "moderate" groups in Syria or certainly none capable of keeping the country at peace.

This is very controversial. First U.S NATO announce the training and arming of Syrian groups. Next you know, terrorists own the Syrian groups, Turkmen and Saudi Compost, is cooperating with them.

Reasons I believed that the KERRY run for peace had an agenda. They slowly but sure are taking over opposition and the mess will have no end. Russia made a BLUNDER. Trusting west.
But perhaps still not late. Now they know where they are. Russia can go and knock them off.

Sending a DEEP warning to peace abiding , that training and arming could had consequences. Aleppo will fall again?

Why won't Putin go in there and level that whole area about 100 square miles of it and kill everything there. Make sure there is some yankees there too lots of them hopefully and kill them all. Then maybe get rid of these saudi animals. Step up to the plate and do something putin you chicken too afraid of useless retarded yankees. Please sir go in and kill them ALL

    jimbogoofball,

Now that ISIS have just used mustard gas shells against the SAA it will be easier for President Putin to use more powerful weapons if he wishes to. Give the US backed terrorists enough rope and they will hang themselves.

Looks like Russian airforce has to return and get involved...they ( partially) left to give peace talks a chance...it is doubtful if USA/Saudi /Turkey / Israel is interested in peace.
