Inside Hong Kong's Kowloon Walled City
25 years ago in March, bulldozers moved in to tear down the Kowloon Walled City, a condemned slum area that now evokes fascination and revulsion in Hong Kong’s collective memory.
The South China Morning Post's Infographics team took a look inside the walls at the lives of the people who lived in the walled city.

Imagine, if you will, a city of eternal night. A place so intensely crowded that sunlight never penetrates its alleyways. Overhead, wires dangle from the ceilings. Neon signs fizz in doorways. All around you, 33,000 people are crammed into self-built apartments barely 10m square, while overhead great airships rumble through sky. Is this a vision from the future? The setting, perhaps, for some dystopian sci-fi novel?

Credits go to cameraman Hamdani Milas. He was one of the people that helped filmed this 1989 documentary about the city. I spoke with him recently and he said that he is interested in a follow up video of some sort so we may expect something new on the way.
He mentioned how it was an incredibly tough shoot. They were a five person crew; himself as cinematographer, a camera assistant, focus-puller, sound recordist, a researcher, production assistant and the director, and a very nice Austrian lady who was most willing to collaborate and listen to crew suggestions.
They shot for 6 days continuously, 10-12 hours a day, at the height of the summer of 1987. He mentioned how it smelled very bad inside from the open drainage, the heat was stifling at plus 32ºC with little to no air circulation, also not knowing whether it was sewage or clean water dripping on their heads occasionally, they regularly had to wipe the camera and lens dry.
The claustrophobia- you could hardly turn around in some places with a 7kg Betacam SP camcorder on your shoulder. They had a tripod with them but hardly used it inside because there was nowhere to position it without blocking the narrow passageways.
They also frequently got lost and had to ask the locals for directions. Lunch was much-anticipated each day when they could take a break outside in the fresh air. After a day’s shoot they were absolutely dripping with sweat and the first thing they’d do after getting home was to put all their clothes straight in the wash and have a long shower. Working in those conditions was an immense challenge technically and physically but, as is often the case, none of that shows in the resulting footage.
Here we have a very interesting first hand account of what Hamdani Milas experienced in the walled city itself when he was filming this video. So by what he’s told me we can understand just how much of an incredible risk it was to film inside this city, even though it was near to when the city was demolished and the place was seen as safer it was still a high risk no go area.
I took it upon myself to re-sub the video as best as possible, the 4 part version is hard-subbed on a version of this film with very poor quality, the subs are also worded incorrectly in some places. So all I've done is re-subbed the whole thing and put it onto a better quality video clip.
Note: about the section of this video where Jackie Pullinger is speaking, I’m sure anyone can see the subtitles are a transcript of Jackie Pullingers actual words in English and not the narrators. I’ve noticed a comment mentioning how the subs are way off in that part. While subbing this video I realised the narrator wasn’t giving an exact translation so took it upon myself to decipher what she was actually saying over his voice. Sorry I just couldn’t help it but it was out of boredom 😉

Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
The time may come where I won't be there
A voice that you remember, but not from where
Maybe then when you put down roots
Then all this aggravation won't feel so huge
[Chorus]
Come on and walk with me, we can make it
Talk with me and let me answer your heart
Life could be the greatest
You and me, can we open our hearts?
[Verse 2]
And all I ask of you when I saw you there
A simple conversation between two friends
Nothing that I said was true
A concrete fascination for me and you
[Chorus]
Come on and walk with me, we can make it
Talk with me and let me answer your heart
Life could be the greatest
You and me, can we open our hearts?
[Post Chorus]
I've got far to go
And the road is looking dark
And I've got only dreams
And a broken heart

The station is located less than two hundred meters west of the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong Express Rail Link Hong Kong section West Kowloon Terminus, five hundred meters west of Austin station on the West Rail line and a kilometre west of Jordan station on the Tsuen Wan line.
Escalators link Elements directly with the station concourse.
The Airport Express is one of the lines of the Hong Kong MTR system. It links the principal urban areas with the Hong Kong International Airport and the AsiaWorld–Expo exhibition and convention centre.
It is not primarily a rapid transit or metro line but a premium-fare express service for the airport and exhibition centre. It uses specially designed rolling stock intended to provide levels of comfort similar to that found on an airliner. The average maximum speed between stations is 135 kilometres per hour (84 mph).
It is the only rail link to the airport's terminal. It runs parallel to the Tung Chung line, a traditional rapid transit line, from Hong Kong station to just south of the channel between Lantau Island and Chek Lap Kok Island, on which the airport was constructed. The line continues to the airport and terminates at AsiaWorld–Expo. The Tung Chung line terminates in the adjacent Tung Chung new town, with bus service to various areas at the airport, including the passenger terminals.
The journey from Hong Kong station to the airport takes 24 minutes. The line is coloured teal on MTR system maps.
The Airport Express line runs from Hong Kong station in the Central and Western District, crosses under the harbour to West Kowloon and stops at Kowloon station. The line then runs along the western side of the Kowloon peninsula, crosses over the Tsing Lai Bridge to Tsing Yi Island, and stops at Tsing Yi station. The line continues on the Lantau Link and runs parallel to the North Lantau Highway to Airport station before terminating at AsiaWorld–Expo station.
The line shares tracks with the Tung Chung line only in the cross-harbour tunnel and from the Lantau Link through the split before reaching the airport island. The two lines have their own tracks and platforms at all stations.
The Airport Express offers more spacious and comfortable trains and stations than other MTR services.[3] On the trains, there are luggage racks next to each door, and each seat is equipped with in-seat loudspeakers for current news, advertisements and announcements shown on LCD televisions in front.
In-town check-in
The Airport Express provides In-Town Check-In at the Hong Kong and Kowloon stations, where passengers on flights with selected airlines can receive boarding passes and check luggage, and travel to the airport bags-free. Each train has a special baggage car and the luggage is scanned in bulk by a Mechanised Automatic Explosive Detection System.[3]
Luggage trolleys, wide fare gates, and free porter service are available at all stations except AsiaWorld–Expo to help passengers with baggage.
Shuttle bus service
The Airport Express Shuttle Bus was a free service provided exclusively for Airport Express passengers at Hong Kong or Kowloon stations, connecting them with major hotels in the Western District though Quarry Bay on Hong Kong Island and the Yau Tsim Mong District and Hung Hom station in Kowloon. Before boarding, proof of eligibility had to be shown, including Airport Express train ticket (Single Journey, Same Day Return, Round Trip, Airport Express Travel Pass), Airline ticket / boarding pass, Airport Staff Octopus card, AsiaWorld–Expo entry pass or event ticket. However, this service was discontinued from 30 June 2020 due to low ridership amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
On-board WiFi and charging service
WiFi are available on all Airport Express cars, while charging service are assigned on first and last cars. USB and electric socket are provided for charging mobile electronics.[4]

Kowloon Tong (Chinese: 九龍塘; Cantonese Yale: Gáulùngtòng) is a station on MTR's Kwun Tong Line and East Rail Line in New Kowloon, Hong Kong. The station serves Kowloon Tong and its vicinity, including Yau Yat Tsuen, the Festival Walk shopping centre, City University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University.
This station serves as one of the two interchange stations for the East Rail Line, leading up to the New Territories and entry point to mainland China. Therefore, it is one of the busiest stations in the system (the other interchange Tsim Sha Tsui/East Tsim Sha Tsui is less convenient).
A new concourse for East Rail Line was opened on 15 April 2004 to increase its capacity.
On 28 September 2008, turnstiles separating the respective concourse of Kwun Tong Line and East Rail Line were removed due to the merger of the KCR and MTR.
The East Rail line (Chinese: 東鐵綫) is one of eleven railway lines of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) system in Hong Kong. It used to be one of the three lines of the Kowloon–Canton Railway (KCR) network. It was known as the KCR British Section (九廣鐵路英段) from 1910 to 1996,[3][better source needed] and the KCR East Rail (九廣東鐵) from 1996 to 2007. The East Rail was the only railway line of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) before the construction of KCR West Rail (now known as West Rail line).
The railway line starts at Hung Hom station in Kowloon and branches in the north at Sheung Shui to terminate at Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau stations. Both are boundary crossing points into Shenzhen. All of the stations are at- grade or elevated before the opening of Shatin to Central Link which will provide underground track. The distance between Hung Hom and Lo Wu stations is 34 km (21 mi).[4] The total distance of the line (including the Lok Ma Chau Spur line) is approximately 41 km (25 mi), making it the longest line in total distance within the system network. The line is coloured light blue on the MTR map.
The same railway is used for passenger and freight services crossing the boundary to other cities, including Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing. These longer distance passenger services (dubbed "Through Trains") start at Hung Hom and end at their termini in the mainland. The line is generally double tracked and electrified, except for certain goods sheds. Immigration and customs facilities are available at Hung Hom (for Through Train passengers) and Lo Wu/Lok Ma Chau (for border interchange passengers) stations.
The railway line was operated by Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation (KCRC) prior to the MTR-KCR merger and has since been taken over by MTR Corporation (MTRC) on 2 December 2007 after the merger was completed. KCRC continues to own the line and its infrastructure while leasing its operations to MTRC.
A southern extension is under construction which will take the line under Victoria Harbour to a new terminus, Admiralty station, on Hong Kong Island. The extension, the centrepiece of the Sha Tin to Central Link expansion project, is due to be ready for service by 2021.

Shenzhen ([ʂə́n.ʈʂə̂n] ( listen)), also known as Sham Chun, is a major city in GuangdongProvince, China. It forms part of the Pearl River Delta megalopolis. The city is located immediately north of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and holds sub-provincial administrative status, with powers slightly less than a province.
Shenzhen was once a market town of 30,000[7][better source needed] people on the route of the Kowloon–Canton Railway. That changed in 1979 when Shenzhen was promoted to city-status and in 1980 designated China’s first Special Economic Zone (SEZ).[7] The 2010 Census recorded a total population of 10,357,938, a figure which includes migrants staying at least six months.[8] Shenzhen was one of the fastest-growing cities in the world during the 1990s and the 2000s.[9] A nationwide 2015 intercensal survey (mini-census conducted five years after the official census in every decade) surveyed for every city in the country recorded 11.389 million residents (9.186 million holding city residency (hukou), the remainder are considered migratory who were present at least six months of the year), while the household size increased to 2.49 people from 2.11 in 2010.[10]
Shenzhen's modern cityscape is the result of its vibrant economy made possible by rapid foreign investment since the institution of the policy of "reform and opening" in late 1979 when the SEZ was established.[11] The city is a leading global technology hub, and is dubbed as the next Silicon Valley of the world.[12][13][14]
Shenzhen is a major financial center in southern China. The city is home to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange as well as the headquarters of numerous well-known home grown multinational companies such as Vanke, Hytera, CIMC, Shenzhen Airlines, Nepstar, Hasee, Ping An Bank, Ping An Insurance, China Merchants Bank, Tencent, ZTE, Huawei and BYD.[15] Shenzhen ranks 22nd in the 2017 edition of the Global Financial Centres Index published by the Z/Yen Group and Qatar Financial Centre Authority.[16] It also has one of the busiest container ports in the world.[17]

Shenzhen has seen its population and activity develop rapidly since the establishment of the SEZ. Shenzhen has an official population of over 10 million. About six million are registered non-local migrant workers who may return to their home town/city on the weekends and live in factory dormitories during the week. The population growth of Shenzhen proper slowed down to less than one percent per year by 2013 with growth spilling over the municipal border and forming a contiguous urban area with southern Dongguan and Huizhou Cities. However, due to the large unregistered floating migrant population living in the city, official estimates put Shenzhen's population at around 20 million inside the administrative area given at any specific moment.[44][45]Shenzhen is the largest migrant city in China.[46]

Bruce Lee (Chinese: 李小龍; born Lee Jun-fan, Chinese: 李振藩; November 27, 1940 – July 20, 1973) was a Hong Kong American martial artist, Hong Kong action film actor, martial arts instructor, philosopher, filmmaker,[3] and the founder of Jeet Kune Do. Lee was the son of Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-Chuen. He is widely considered by commentators, critics, media and other martial artists to be one of the most influential martial artists of all time,[4] and a pop culture icon of the 20th century.[5][6] He is often credited with helping to change the way Asians were presented in American films.[7]
Lee was born in Chinatown, San Francisco on November 27, 1940 to parents from Hong Kong and was raised in Kowloon with his family until his late teens. He was introduced to the film industry by his father and appeared in several films as a child actor. Lee moved to the United States at the age of 18 to receive his higher education, at the University of Washington, at Seattle[8] and it was during this time that he began teaching martial arts. His Hong Kong and Hollywood-produced films elevated the traditional Hong Kong martial arts film to a new level of popularity and acclaim, sparking a surge of interest in Chinese martial arts in the West in the 1970s. The direction and tone of his films changed and influenced martial arts and martial arts films in the United States, Hong Kong and the rest of the world.[9]
He is noted for his roles in five feature-length films: Lo Wei's The Big Boss (1971) and Fist of Fury (1972); Golden Harvest's Way of the Dragon (1972), directed and written by Lee; Golden Harvest and Warner Brothers' Enter the Dragon (1973) and The Game of Death (1973), both directed by Robert Clouse.[10] Lee became an iconic figure known throughout the world, particularly among the Chinese, as he portrayed Chinese nationalism in his films.[11] He trained in the art of Wing Chun and later combined his other influences from various sources, in the spirit of his personal martial arts philosophy, which he dubbed Jeet Kune Do (The Way of the Intercepting Fist). Lee held dual nationality of Hong Kong and the United States.[12] He died in Kowloon Tong on July 20, 1973 at the age of 32.
