Slacker (1991) is an American independent film written and directed by Richard Linklater, who also appears in the film. Slacker was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize - Dramatic at the Sundance Film Festival in 1991.
Slacker is a uniquely structured and seemingly plotless film, following a single day in the life of an ensemble of mostly twenty-something bohemians and misfits in Austin, Texas. The film follows various characters and scenes, never staying with one character or conversation for more than a few minutes before picking up someone else in the scene and following them. The characters include Linklater as a talkative taxi passenger, a UFO buff who insists the U.S. has been on the moon since the 1950s, a JFK conspiracy theorist, an elderly anarchist who befriends a man trying to rob his house, a serial television set collector and a woman trying to sell a Madonna pap smear. The woman selling the pap smear appears on the movie poster, and was played by Butthole Surfers drummer Teresa Taylor. Most of the characters grapple with feelings of social exclusion or political marginalization, which are recurring themes in their conversations. They discuss social class, terrorism, joblessness, and government control of the media.

Plot: When a popular VIP is assassinated there is public outrage. A historian has unearthed a 400 year-old law that makes clear the assassin must be executed. This generates media heat, and an unpopular government, only seven weeks from an election, sanctions the execution to win public favor. They decide to privatize it. Hugo is a prison governor beset with crises; career, money & marital. He is passed over for promotion, his much younger boss wants him out and his wife's spending is pushing him towards bankruptcy. The American company operating the prison is granted the tender for the execution and Hugo is given the task by an area manager who wants Hugo to fail. Maurice is a conman who has intermittently spent almost thirty years in Hugo's prison - they know each other well. Maurice has a proposal - a way to solve Hugo's money worries; secretly setting up an offshore company to market the TV rights to the execution. Hugo becomes desperate enough to agree. The execution which soon becomes known as "X-Day" quickly becomes the biggest and most talked about television event the world has ever seen!
