Mayor of the Freetown City Council (FCC), Sam Bode Frankly Gibson has revealed that council still owes the National Revenue Authority (NRA) 1.5 billion Leones.
At a recent press conference at the FCC’s Wallace Johnson Street head office, Mayor Gibson explained that upon assuming office in 2013, council was in 20 billion Leones debt “which we inherited.”
To date, he explained that council has reduced the gap tremendously. “We now owe NRA 1.5 billion Leones.
The Mayor explained that council has made serious effort in ensuring that it becomes debt free.
He also explained that in order to avoid recurrence of such colossal amount accumulated as NRA’s debt, council has devised on the spot payment for NRA.
The Mayor encouraged Sierra Leoneans who are interested to look a council’s finances to come, as their doors are always widely open.
Mayor Gibson also noted that there are contractors who have also made claims that council has to pay them. However, he emphasized that some of them lack proper documentation and ‘so far we’ve failed to adhere to their claims’.
