Wigtownshire or the County of Wigtown is a registration county and lieutenancy area in south-west Scotland. Until 1975, Wigtownshire was one of the administrative counties used for local government purposes, and is now administered as part of the council area of Dumfries and Galloway. As a lieutenancy area, Wigtownshire has its own Lord Lieutenant, currently John Alexander Ross.
Wigtownshire borders the Irish Sea to the west, the Solway Firth to the south, Ayrshire to the north, and the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright to the east. Together the Stewartry and Wigtownshire are referred to as Galloway. The western area of Wigtownshire is known as Rhinns of Galloway, and the eastern area is known as Machars. Wigtownshire includes the southernmost point in Scotland, the Mull of Galloway, the Machars and the Rhins of Galloway peninsula. The county town was historically Wigtown, with the administrative centre moving to Stranraer, the largest town, on the creation of a county council in 1890.

Wigtownshire, Scotland. Various shots of a tropical garden; exotic flowers and palm trees; goldfish swimming in a rather murky looking ornamental pond. L/S of Logan House (looks like a small stately home). More shots of the exotic and colourful plant life in the gardens; we see a middle-aged couple, Mr and Mrs Cubbins wandering around. The Head Gardener, Mr Colledge is seen working on a flower bed with a hoe. More general garden shots follow. Note: On file is magazine article about the gardens. There are no clues about who Mr and Mrs Cubbins are; perhaps they lived in Logan House? FILM ID:145.05 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV. After a week of intense sketching and performing at the Wigtown Book Festival in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, I took myself to the beach at Garlieston to take the air, commune with nature and recharge my batteries. There I found a man made structure on the beach. Is it art? Is it meant to be art? It is artifice - it is not a natural structure. Standing there on the beach it draws me to it, a man-made object asking to be examined above all the other wonders to be found on the beach. We make stuff to say that we are here. Look at me! I was here! I'm not just a pebble on the beach, I'm a thinking thing and I'm making a mark to be remembered by. with award winning illustrator, Shoo Rayner.
