The arrest of General Pinochet exposed the frightening hatreds between the political left and right in Chile. While the left reminded the world of Pinochet’s horrific crimes, the right demanded that the horrors be put in their proper context. These were not atrocities, the argument runs, but excesses—what hard men do to restore order and economic success in a harsh environment.
In a Santiago theatre the emotional power-play of torture and disappearances finds expression. But their outlet in Chilean politics is stifled. Pinochet may not be in power anymore, but he certainly made sure his legacy would last. He changed the electoral rules so that the right had a stranglehold on the constitution. And though the democracy is flawed, its economy is the healthiest in South America, another side of the Pinochet legacy. Prosperity has sweetened memories. It helps explain why a solid third of the Chilean people still support a man the world reviles. The right has built memorials to the disappeared. Move on says the right. Don’t look back. Build a country for our children to play. But even if they should, can they stifle the anger of Pinochet’s victims?

In Chile, the murderous past under dictator general Augusto Pinochet is slowly coming under scrutiny. With new evidence of extermination camps, the families of the disappeared are yearning for justice.
"I started to testify and began to get rid of those pangs of guilt", confesses Jorgelino Vergara. Aged only 15, Jorgelino worked as waiter at the secret Simon Bolivar extermination centre witnessing horrific torture and murder. More than 3000 people were kidnapped and killed after the army general seized power in 1973. After a long investigation, charges are being laid against more than seventy people accused of involvement in the brutality at Simon Bolivar. One of them is a member of the much feared Lautaro Brigade, Adriana Rivas. From the safety of her Australian exile, she denies charges but her views on torture remain chilling: "Everyone knew they had to do that in order to break them because Communists would not talk. It was necessary". The secrets and brutality of the Pinochet regime are laid bare at Santiago's memory museum. The daughter of one of Rivas' victims, who was beaten to a pulp and then injected with a lethal poison, is now a curator there. As she fights for remembrance and justice, she wonders: "How can a human being be part of this machinery of exterminating people?"

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has said former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet will get nothing more than a "show trial" if extradited to Spain.
Speaking at the Conservative Party's annual conference, she also called the Labour government contemptible for allowing his extradition trial to go forward.
Thatcher's comments came hours after a British judge excused the former dictator from appearing in court later this week.
The ruling came after a doctor testified the general suffered two small strokes last month.
For the second day in a row, Margaret Thatcher created a storm in British politics.
On Tuesday, the former prime minister lashed out at plans to join the European Union, blaming the continent for all the problems Britain had suffered during her lifetime.
On Wednesday, she turned her attention to her former ally Augusto Pinochet, addressing his plight at a rally held in conjunction with the annual Conservative party conference.
The meeting was the most eagerly awaited event of the Conservative party conference.
The speech was one of Lady Thatcher's first at a Tory conference since she was dumped as party leader in 1990 and marked the culmination of an electrifying return.
To the delight of an adoring crowd, the woman known as the Iron Lady accused Britain of leaving Pinochet in the lurch after he saved British lives during the Falkland Islands' War.
She went on to say that Pinochet was not on trial for human rights abuses but for defeating
communism - comments which sparked a rousing round of applause.
She added the Spanish case against the general was fraught with inconsistencies that made a fair trial impossible.

"The chance of Senator Pinochet receiving anything resembling what Britain would recognise as justice in a Spanish court is minimal, not least because key witnesses for his defence run the risk of immediate arrest if they set foot on Spanish soil. Baroness Thatcher also had stinging criticism for the administration of Prime Minister Tony Blair, whom she accused of deserting a longtime British ally.

The rally in Blackpool was also attended by Pinochet's son, who took the podium to shake the hand of the woman he said had become the public face of his father's defence.
Baroness Thatcher has been a longtime friend of the former dictator.
She maintains he saved hundreds of British lives during the Falkland War by using Chilean radar to give the British early warning of Argentine air raids.

A British judge on Wednesday excused the former dictator from appearing in court later this week.

The 83-year-old had been scheduled to be in court on Friday, when a ruling is expected on Spain's request to extradite him.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte (Valparaíso, 25 de noviembre de 1915-Santiago, 10 de diciembre de 2006) fue un militar chileno que encabezó la dictadura militar de Chile que se desarrolló entre 1973 y 1990, periodo conocido en ese país como Régimen Militar.
Su mandato cuenta con numerosos adeptos de la derecha política, los que destacan la instauración en Chile durante el Régimen Militar de una economía de libre mercado, integrada en la economía mundial y con una fuerte presencia del sector privado. Este cambio de modelo económico conllevó un acelerado crecimiento macroeconómico, que situó a Chile como uno de los países con mayor bonanza económica y con los mayores índices de desarrollo humano en América Latina. Por otra parte, dicho modelo también profundizó la concentración de riqueza y aumentó las desigualdades socioeconómicas del país.
Durante la dictadura se cometieron graves y diversas violaciones de los derechos humanos, razón por la cual ha sido criticada tanto en su país como en el resto del mundo. Pinochet debió enfrentar diversos procesos judiciales, algunos de los cuales fueron sobreseídos en vida por diversas razones, mientras que otros lo fueron a causa de su fallecimiento antes de que se dictara una resolución definitiva.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte (25 November 1915 – 10 December 2006) was a Chilean general, politician and the military ruler of Chile between 1973 and 1990; he remained the Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army until 1998. He was also president of the Government Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981. His rule of Chile was a dictatorship.
Under the influence of the free market-oriented neoliberal "Chicago Boys", the military government implemented economic liberalization, including currency stabilization, removed tariff protections for local industry, banned trade unions and privatized social security and hundreds of state-owned enterprises. These policies produced what has been referred to as the "Miracle of Chile," but critics state that economic inequality dramatically increased and attribute the devastating effects of the 1982 monetary crisis on the Chilean economy to these policies. Chile was, for most of the 1990s, the best-performing economy in Latin America, though the legacy of Pinochet's reforms continues to be in dispute.

Presidente, mi interés se centra en su posición frente al comunismo. Usted es, históricamente, el único que hasta ahora ha logrado derrocar un régimen marxista. Para muchos es Ud. el antimarxista por excelencia. ¿Ha sido siempre antimarxista? ¿Conoce Ud. bien el marxismo?
-Mi repudio a los marxistas-leninistas es producto de mi conocimiento de su doctrina, con la que tomé mis primeros contactos cuando estuve a cargo de los relegados comunistas en Pisagua en enero y parte de febrero de 1948 y, posteriormente, cuando fui Delegado del Jefe de la Zona de Emergencia en el centro carbonífero de Schwager. Allí nuevamente tuve que ocuparme de los comunistas y sus actividades. Más adelante me adentré en el estudio y el análisis de su doctrina y de sus métodos. En esas lecturas observé con preocupación cómo tiende el marxismo a alterar los principios morales que deben sustentar la sociedad, hasta alcanzar su destrucción a fin de sustituirlos por las consignas ideológicas del comunismo.
Así, por espacio de veinte años me fui interiorizando en esa ideología que no vacilo en calificar de siniestra, hasta convencerme finalmente de que la única forma de enfrentar a tan hipócrita y contaminadora doctrina consiste en la fortaleza espiritual y la firmeza y cohesión de quienes la repudian. Asimismo entendí que no es posible pensar en una lucha anticomunista eficaz cuando se está enmarcado en añejos esquemas democráticos. Siempre respeté y admiré esta concepción política, la democracia, pero, no obstante sus bondades, si no media una debida adecuación, es absolutamente incapaz de enfrentar al comunismo. Mucho menos puede detener la acción de una doctrina totalitaria porque, paradójicamente, es en la propia democracia tradicional donde se encuentran las mayores facilidades para destruirla.
-¿Vio Ud. en consecuencia, en el triunfo de la Unidad Popular el comienzo del fin de la antigua democracia chilena?
-Con enorme inquietud recibí el triunfo del candidato de la equivocadamente llamada Unidad Popular, y con creciente angustia presencié cómo en Chile se deterioraba su consistencia social, moral, económica y política. Sin embargo, este proceso no se inició en el gobierno de la Unidad Popular, porque desde tiempo atrás la demagogia venía arrastrando al país hacia su destrucción. En su etapa final, dio la primera mayoría relativa en las urnas a un hombre que reconocía ser marxista-leninista y que, dos meses después, sectores mayoritarios del Congreso designaban Presidente de Chile. Fue un espectáculo muy desconcertante el que dimos al mundo: un país tradicionalmente democrático entregó su libertad a un sector totalitario. No se impuso éste por la fuerza de las armas, como ha sucedido en todos los países en donde gobierna el comunismo, sino que fue entregado por una corriente de la propia democracia.
-¿Piensa Ud. que con la experiencia de la Unidad Popular el país quedó "vacunado" contra el comunismo?
-Dentro de esta amarga realidad, tan negativa para la Nación, debo considerar que también existió un factor positivo: el triunfo de la Unidad Popular fue la mejor vacuna para el país, ya que grandes sectores quedaron predispuestos a rechazar en el futuro esta doctrina, pero ello se logrará siempre que a las nuevas generaciones se las ilustre de lo que es el comunismo, si no, todo se olvida.
Su nefasta administración hizo sufrir los excesos a que lleva la doctrina marxista-leninista y se logró así una experiencia que no habría sido posible si hubiese triunfado alguno de los candidatos democráticos.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte, more commonly known as Augusto Pinochet (Spanish pronunciation: [auˈɣusto pinoˈʃā] or Spanish pronunciation: [auˈɣusto pinoˈtʃet]; 25 November 1915 – 10 December 2006), was dictator of Chile between 1973 and 1990 and Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army from 1973 to 1998. He was also president of the Government Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981.
Pinochet assumed power in Chile following a United States-backed coup d'état on 11 September 1973 that overthrew the elected socialist Unidad Popular government of President Salvador Allende and ended civilian rule. Several academics have stated that the support of the United States was crucial to the coup and the consolidation of power afterward. Pinochet had been promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the Army by Allende on 23 August 1973, having been its General Chief of Staff since early 1972. In December 1974, the ruling military junta appointed Pinochet President of Chile by joint decree, although without the support of one of the coup's instigators, Air Force General Gustavo Leigh.

The relatively small central area dominates in terms of population and agricultural resources, and is the cultural and political center from which Chile expanded in the late 19th century when it incorporated its northern and southern regions. Southern Chile is rich in forests and grazing lands, and features a string of volcanoes and lakes. The southern coast is a labyrinth of fjords, inlets, canals, twisting peninsulas, and islands.

Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, LG, OM, PC, FRS (née Roberts; 13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013) was a British stateswoman and politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and the Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century and is currently the only woman to have held the office. A Soviet journalist dubbed her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. As Prime Minister, she implemented policies that have come to be known as Thatcherism.
Originally a research chemist before becoming a barrister, Thatcher was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Finchley in 1959. Edward Heath appointed her Secretary of State for Education and Science in his 1970 government. In 1975, Thatcher defeated Heath in the Conservative Party leadership election to become Leader of the Opposition and became the first woman to lead a major political party in the United Kingdom. She became Prime Minister after winning the 1979 general election.

More than 3000 people were kidnapped and killed after the army general seized power in 1973. After a long investigation, charges are being laid against more than seventy people accused of involvement in the brutality at Simon Bolivar. Speaking at the Conservative Party's annual conference, she also called the Labour government contemptible for allowing his extradition trial to go forward. Thatcher's comments came hours after a British judge excused the former dictator from appearing in court later this week. The ruling came after a doctor testified the general suffered two small strokes last month. For the second day in a row, Margaret Thatcher created a storm in British politics. On Tuesday, the former prime minister lashed out at plans to join the European Union, blaming the continent for all the problems Britain had suffered during her lifetime. On Wednesday, she turned her attention to her former ally Augusto Pinochet, addressing his plight at a rally held in conjunction with the annual Conservative party conference. The meeting was the most eagerly awaited event of the Conservative party conference. The speech was one of Lady Thatcher's first at a Tory conference since she was dumped as party leader in 1990 and marked the culmination of an electrifying return. To the delight of an adoring crowd, the woman known as the Iron Lady accused Britain of leaving Pinochet in the lurch after he saved British lives during the Falkland Islands' War. She went on to say that Pinochet was not on trial for human rights abuses but for defeating communism - comments which sparked a rousing round of applause. She added the Spanish case against the general was fraught with inconsistencies that made a fair trial impossible. Usted es, históricamente, el único que hasta ahora ha logrado derrocar un régimen marxista. Para muchos es Ud. el antimarxista por excelencia. ¿Ha sido siempre antimarxista? ¿Conoce Ud. bien el marxismo? -Mi repudio a los marxistas-leninistas es producto de mi conocimiento de su doctrina, con la que tomé mis primeros contactos cuando estuve a cargo de los relegados comunistas en Pisagua en enero y parte de febrero de 1948 y, posteriormente, cuando fui Delegado del Jefe de la Zona de Emergencia en el centro carbonífero de Schwager. Allí nuevamente tuve que ocuparme de los comunistas y sus actividades. Más adelante me adentré en el estudio y el análisis de su doctrina y de sus métodos. En esas lecturas observé con preocupación cómo tiende el marxismo a alterar los principios morales que deben sustentar la sociedad, hasta alcanzar su destrucción a fin de sustituirlos por las consignas ideológicas del comunismo. Así, por espacio de veinte años me fui interiorizando en esa ideología que no vacilo en calificar de siniestra, hasta convencerme finalmente de que la única forma de enfrentar a tan hipócrita y contaminadora doctrina consiste en la fortaleza espiritual y la firmeza y cohesión de quienes la repudian. Asimismo entendí que no es posible pensar en una lucha anticomunista eficaz cuando se está enmarcado en añejos esquemas democráticos. Siempre respeté y admiré esta concepción política, la democracia, pero, no obstante sus bondades, si no media una debida adecuación, es absolutamente incapaz de enfrentar al comunismo. Mucho menos puede detener la acción de una doctrina totalitaria porque, paradójicamente, es en la propia democracia tradicional donde se encuentran las mayores facilidades para destruirla. -¿Vio Ud. en consecuencia, en el triunfo de la Unidad Popular el comienzo del fin de la antigua democracia chilena? -Con enorme inquietud recibí el triunfo del candidato de la equivocadamente llamada Unidad Popular, y con creciente angustia presencié cómo en Chile se deterioraba su consistencia social, moral, económica y política. Sin embargo, este proceso no se inició en el gobierno de la Unidad Popular, porque desde tiempo atrás la demagogia venía arrastrando al país hacia su destrucción. En su etapa final, dio la primera mayoría relativa en las urnas a un hombre que reconocía ser marxista-leninista y que, dos meses después, sectores mayoritarios del Congreso designaban Presidente de Chile. Fue un espectáculo muy desconcertante el que dimos al mundo: un país tradicionalmente democrático entregó su libertad a un sector totalitario. No se impuso éste por la fuerza de las armas, como ha sucedido en todos los países en donde gobierna el comunismo, sino que fue entregado por una corriente de la propia democracia. -¿Piensa Ud. que con la experiencia de la Unidad Popular el país quedó "vacunado" contra el comunismo? -Dentro de esta amarga realidad, tan negativa para la Nación, debo considerar que también existió un factor positivo: el triunfo de la Unidad Popular fue la mejor vacuna para el país, ya que grandes sectores quedaron predispuestos a rechazar en el futuro esta doctrina, pero ello se logrará siempre que a las nuevas generaciones se las ilustre de lo que es el comunismo, si no, todo se olvida. Su nefasta administración hizo sufrir los excesos a que lleva la doctrina marxista-leninista y se logró así una experiencia que no habría sido posible si hubiese triunfado alguno de los candidatos democráticos.

The arrest of General Pinochet exposed the frightening hatreds between the political left and right in Chile. While the left reminded the world of Pinochet’s horrific crimes, the right demanded that the horrors be put in their proper context. These were not atrocities, the argument runs, but excesses—what hard men do to restore order and economic success in a harsh environment.
In a Santiago theatre the emotional power-play of torture and disappearances finds expression. But their outlet in Chilean politics is stifled. Pinochet may not be in power anymore, but he certainly made sure his legacy would last. He changed the electoral rules so that the right had a stranglehold on the constitution. And though the democracy is flawed, its economy is the healthiest in South America, another side of the Pinochet legacy. Prosperity has sweetened memories. It helps explain why a solid third of the Chilean people still support a man the world reviles. The right has built memorials to the disappeared. Move on says the right. Don’t look back. Build a country for our children to play. But even if they should, can they stifle the anger of Pinochet’s victims?

In Chile, the murderous past under dictator general Augusto Pinochet is slowly coming under scrutiny. With new evidence of extermination camps, the families of the disappeared are yearning for justice.
"I started to testify and began to get rid of those pangs of guilt", confesses Jorgelino Vergara. Aged only 15, Jorgelino worked as waiter at the secret Simon Bolivar extermination centre witnessing horrific torture and murder. More than 3000 people were kidnapped and killed after the army general seized power in 1973. After a long investigation, charges are being laid against more than seventy people accused of involvement in the brutality at Simon Bolivar. One of them is a member of the much feared Lautaro Brigade, Adriana Rivas. From the safety of her Australian exile, she denies charges but her views on torture remain chilling: "Everyone knew they had to do that in order to break them because Communists would not talk. It was necessary". The secrets and brutality of the Pinochet regime are laid bare at Santiago's memory museum. The daughter of one of Rivas' victims, who was beaten to a pulp and then injected with a lethal poison, is now a curator there. As she fights for remembrance and justice, she wonders: "How can a human being be part of this machinery of exterminating people?"

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has said former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet will get nothing more than a "show trial" if extradited to Spain.
Speaking at the Conservative Party's annual conference, she also called the Labour government contemptible for allowing his extradition trial to go forward.
Thatcher's comments came hours after a British judge excused the former dictator from appearing in court later this week.
The ruling came after a doctor testified the general suffered two small strokes last month.
For the second day in a row, Margaret Thatcher created a storm in British politics.
On Tuesday, the former prime minister lashed out at plans to join the European Union, blaming the continent for all the problems Britain had suffered during her lifetime.
On Wednesday, she turned her attention to her former ally Augusto Pinochet, addressing his plight at a rally held in conjunction with the annual Conservative party conference.
The meeting was the most eagerly awaited event of the Conservative party conference.
The speech was one of Lady Thatcher's first at a Tory conference since she was dumped as party leader in 1990 and marked the culmination of an electrifying return.
To the delight of an adoring crowd, the woman known as the Iron Lady accused Britain of leaving Pinochet in the lurch after he saved British lives during the Falkland Islands' War.
She went on to say that Pinochet was not on trial for human rights abuses but for defeating
communism - comments which sparked a rousing round of applause.
She added the Spanish case against the general was fraught with inconsistencies that made a fair trial impossible.

"The chance of Senator Pinochet receiving anything resembling what Britain would recognise as justice in a Spanish court is minimal, not least because key witnesses for his defence run the risk of immediate arrest if they set foot on Spanish soil. Su mandato cuenta con numerosos adeptos de la derecha política, los que destacan la instauración en Chile durante el Régimen Militar de una economía de libre mercado, integrada en la economía mundial y con una fuerte presencia del sector privado. Este cambio de modelo económico conllevó un acelerado crecimiento macroeconómico, que situó a Chile como uno de los países con mayor bonanza económica y con los mayores índices de desarrollo humano en América Latina. Por otra parte, dicho modelo también profundizó la concentración de riqueza y aumentó las desigualdades socioeconómicas del país.
Durante la dictadura se cometieron graves y diversas violaciones de los derechos humanos, razón por la cual ha sido criticada tanto en su país como en el resto del mundo. Pinochet debió enfrentar diversos procesos judiciales, algunos de los cuales fueron sobreseídos en vida por diversas razones, mientras que otros lo fueron a causa de su fallecimiento antes de que se dictara una resolución definitiva.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte (25 November 1915 – 10 December 2006) was a Chilean general, politician and the military ruler of Chile between 1973 and 1990; he remained the Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army until 1998. He was also president of the Government Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981. His rule of Chile was a dictatorship.
Under the influence of the free market-oriented neoliberal "Chicago Boys", the military government implemented economic liberalization, including currency stabilization, removed tariff protections for local industry, banned trade unions and privatized social security and hundreds of state-owned enterprises. These policies produced what has been referred to as the "Miracle of Chile," but critics state that economic inequality dramatically increased and attribute the devastating effects of the 1982 monetary crisis on the Chilean economy to these policies. Chile was, for most of the 1990s, the best-performing economy in Latin America, though the legacy of Pinochet's reforms continues to be in dispute.

Presidente, mi interés se centra en su posición frente al comunismo. Usted es, históricamente, el único que hasta ahora ha logrado derrocar un régimen marxista. Para muchos es Ud. el antimarxista por excelencia. ¿Ha sido siempre antimarxista? ¿Conoce Ud. bien el marxismo?
-Mi repudio a los marxistas-leninistas es producto de mi conocimiento de su doctrina, con la que tomé mis primeros contactos cuando estuve a cargo de los relegados comunistas en Pisagua en enero y parte de febrero de 1948 y, posteriormente, cuando fui Delegado del Jefe de la Zona de Emergencia en el centro carbonífero de Schwager. Allí nuevamente tuve que ocuparme de los comunistas y sus actividades. Más adelante me adentré en el estudio y el análisis de su doctrina y de sus métodos. En esas lecturas observé con preocupación cómo tiende el marxismo a alterar los principios morales que deben sustentar la sociedad, hasta alcanzar su destrucción a fin de sustituirlos por las consignas ideológicas del comunismo.
Así, por espacio de veinte años me fui interiorizando en esa ideología que no vacilo en calificar de siniestra, hasta convencerme finalmente de que la única forma de enfrentar a tan hipócrita y contaminadora doctrina consiste en la fortaleza espiritual y la firmeza y cohesión de quienes la repudian. Asimismo entendí que no es posible pensar en una lucha anticomunista eficaz cuando se está enmarcado en añejos esquemas democráticos. Siempre respeté y admiré esta concepción política, la democracia, pero, no obstante sus bondades, si no media una debida adecuación, es absolutamente incapaz de enfrentar al comunismo. Mucho menos puede detener la acción de una doctrina totalitaria porque, paradójicamente, es en la propia democracia tradicional donde se encuentran las mayores facilidades para destruirla.
-¿Vio Ud. en consecuencia, en el triunfo de la Unidad Popular el comienzo del fin de la antigua democracia chilena?
-Con enorme inquietud recibí el triunfo del candidato de la equivocadamente llamada Unidad Popular, y con creciente angustia presencié cómo en Chile se deterioraba su consistencia social, moral, económica y política. Sin embargo, este proceso no se inició en el gobierno de la Unidad Popular, porque desde tiempo atrás la demagogia venía arrastrando al país hacia su destrucción. En su etapa final, dio la primera mayoría relativa en las urnas a un hombre que reconocía ser marxista-leninista y que, dos meses después, sectores mayoritarios del Congreso designaban Presidente de Chile. Fue un espectáculo muy desconcertante el que dimos al mundo: un país tradicionalmente democrático entregó su libertad a un sector totalitario. No se impuso éste por la fuerza de las armas, como ha sucedido en todos los países en donde gobierna el comunismo, sino que fue entregado por una corriente de la propia democracia.
-¿Piensa Ud. que con la experiencia de la Unidad Popular el país quedó "vacunado" contra el comunismo?
-Dentro de esta amarga realidad, tan negativa para la Nación, debo considerar que también existió un factor positivo: el triunfo de la Unidad Popular fue la mejor vacuna para el país, ya que grandes sectores quedaron predispuestos a rechazar en el futuro esta doctrina, pero ello se logrará siempre que a las nuevas generaciones se las ilustre de lo que es el comunismo, si no, todo se olvida.
Su nefasta administración hizo sufrir los excesos a que lleva la doctrina marxista-leninista y se logró así una experiencia que no habría sido posible si hubiese triunfado alguno de los candidatos democráticos.

On Tuesday, the former prime minister lashed out at plans to join the European Union, blaming the continent for all the problems Britain had suffered during her lifetime.
On Wednesday, she turned her attention to her former ally Augusto Pinochet, addressing his plight at a rally held in conjunction with the annual Conservative party conference.
The meeting was the most eagerly awaited event of the Conservative party conference.
The speech was one of Lady Thatcher's first at a Tory conference since she was dumped as party leader in 1990 and marked the culmination of an electrifying return.
To the delight of an adoring crowd, the woman known as the Iron Lady accused Britain of leaving Pinochet in the lurch after he saved British lives during the Falkland Islands' War.
She went on to say that Pinochet was not on trial for human rights abuses but for defeating
communism - comments which sparked a rousing round of applause.
She added the Spanish case against the general was fraught with inconsistencies that made a fair trial impossible.

"The chance of Senator Pinochet receiving anything resembling what Britain would recognise as justice in a Spanish court is minimal, not least because key witnesses for his defence run the risk of immediate arrest if they set foot on Spanish soil. Stupéfiante interview du Général, agrémentée d'un peu d'intimité. - PINOCHET, dans sa salle de gymnastique : en short et polo, il court sur un tapis roulant et fait des exercices de musculation. - Prend le café avec sa fille. Début ITW (VO+ss titres). La voix est fatiguée et nasillarde : "Le pays a été trompé en votant "NON" " / a été blessé car a "beaucoup fait pour le pays"... - Cortège présidentiel entrant dans le sous-sol de La Moneda; la Garde présidentielle présente les armes au Président. - Travel : portraits de tous les présidents chiliens (sauf S. Allende) sur les murs d'un couloir du Palais. - Place devant le palais depuis un balcon. - Archives N/B de 1973 : bombardement et incendie du palais de La Moneda le jour du "golpe" (coup d'Etat). VG palais reconstruit à neuf, aujourd'hui. - Patio intérieur de La Moneda. PINOCHET montre la fenêtre du bureau où S. ALLENDE s'est suicidé. Il reconnaît qu'il y a eu des excès le jour du coup d'Etat mais des deux côtés et, du sien, parce qu'ils étaient "obligés de réagir". B. BENYAMIN insiste : "Et si c'était à refaire ?..."; le dictateur répond : "Question trop difficile"... - En civil, assis dans un fauteuil, PINOCHET accepte de jouer au jeu des définitions; il ponctue chaque réponse d'un geste du doigt ou de la main: "PATRIE ?... libre !... FORCES ARMEES ?... protection de la démocratie... COMMUNISME ?... destruction de la patrie... DROITS DE L'HOMME ?... concept très honnête mal utilisé par les communistes... DICTATURE ?... je n'aime pas ce mot... TORTURE ?... moyens coercitifs pour obtenir de la personne humaine des mensonges et des vérités à coup de sang et de douleur... COUP D'ETAT DU 11 SEPTEMBRE 1973 ?... liberté de la patrie... This pressure from both the bottom and the top lead to the military coup by Augusto Pinochet. The left has successfully sold the myth that Allende was a legitimate, democratically elected leader who was implementing progressive reforms to help the poor exploited masses, and when US corporate interests were threatened the United States conspired and singlehandedly organized a coup. The truth is much more complicated, and when it comes to Allende, more sinister. Allende was a Soviet agent funded by the KGB to lead Chile to socialism, and was also in league the communist regime in Cuba. Tune in for this rarely heard, yet true perspective of a pivotal event in Latin American history, cited by many, but understood by few.

The arrest of General Pinochet exposed the frightening hatreds between the political left and right in Chile. While the left reminded the world of Pinochet’s horrific crimes, the right demanded that the horrors be put in their proper context. These were not atrocities, the argument runs, but excesses—what hard men do to restore order and economic success in a harsh environment.
In a Santiago theatre the emotional power-play of torture and disappearances finds expression. But their outlet in Chilean politics is stifled. Pinochet may not be in power anymore, but he certainly made sure his legacy would last. He changed the electoral rules so that the right had a stranglehold on the constitution. And though the democracy is flawed, its economy is the healthiest in South America, another side of the Pinochet legacy. Prosperity has sweetened memories. It helps explain why a solid third of the Chilean people still support a man the world reviles. The right has built memorials to the disappeared. Move on says the right. Don’t look back. Build a country for our children to play. But even if they should, can they stifle the anger of Pinochet’s victims?

In Chile, the murderous past under dictator general Augusto Pinochet is slowly coming under scrutiny. With new evidence of extermination camps, the families of the disappeared are yearning for justice.
"I started to testify and began to get rid of those pangs of guilt", confesses Jorgelino Vergara. Aged only 15, Jorgelino worked as waiter at the secret Simon Bolivar extermination centre witnessing horrific torture and murder. More than 3000 people were kidnapped and killed after the army general seized power in 1973. After a long investigation, charges are being laid against more than seventy people accused of involvement in the brutality at Simon Bolivar. One of them is a member of the much feared Lautaro Brigade, Adriana Rivas. From the safety of her Australian exile, she denies charges but her views on torture remain chilling: "Everyone knew they had to do that in order to break them because Communists would not talk. It was necessary". The secrets and brutality of the Pinochet regime are laid bare at Santiago's memory museum. The daughter of one of Rivas' victims, who was beaten to a pulp and then injected with a lethal poison, is now a curator there. As she fights for remembrance and justice, she wonders: "How can a human being be part of this machinery of exterminating people?"

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has said former Chilean leader Augusto Pinochet will get nothing more than a "show trial" if extradited to Spain.
Speaking at the Conservative Party's annual conference, she also called the Labour government contemptible for allowing his extradition trial to go forward.
Thatcher's comments came hours after a British judge excused the former dictator from appearing in court later this week.
The ruling came after a doctor testified the general suffered two small strokes last month.
For the second day in a row, Margaret Thatcher created a storm in British politics.
On Tuesday, the former prime minister lashed out at plans to join the European Union, blaming the continent for all the problems Britain had suffered during her lifetime.
On Wednesday, she turned her attention to her former ally Augusto Pinochet, addressing his plight at a rally held in conjunction with the annual Conservative party conference.
The meeting was the most eagerly awaited event of the Conservative party conference.
The speech was one of Lady Thatcher's first at a Tory conference since she was dumped as party leader in 1990 and marked the culmination of an electrifying return.
To the delight of an adoring crowd, the woman known as the Iron Lady accused Britain of leaving Pinochet in the lurch after he saved British lives during the Falkland Islands' War.
She went on to say that Pinochet was not on trial for human rights abuses but for defeating
communism - comments which sparked a rousing round of applause.
She added the Spanish case against the general was fraught with inconsistencies that made a fair trial impossible.

"The chance of Senator Pinochet receiving anything resembling what Britain would recognise as justice in a Spanish court is minimal, not least because key witnesses for his defence run the risk of immediate arrest if they set foot on Spanish soil. Este cambio de modelo económico conllevó un acelerado crecimiento macroeconómico, que situó a Chile como uno de los países con mayor bonanza económica y con los mayores índices de desarrollo humano en América Latina. Por otra parte, dicho modelo también profundizó la concentración de riqueza y aumentó las desigualdades socioeconómicas del país.
Durante la dictadura se cometieron graves y diversas violaciones de los derechos humanos, razón por la cual ha sido criticada tanto en su país como en el resto del mundo. Under the influence of the free market-oriented neoliberal "Chicago Boys", the military government implemented economic liberalization, including currency stabilization, removed tariff protections for local industry, banned trade unions and privatized social security and hundreds of state-owned enterprises. These policies produced what has been referred to as the "Miracle of Chile," but critics state that economic inequality dramatically increased and attribute the devastating effects of the 1982 monetary crisis on the Chilean economy to these policies. Chile was, for most of the 1990s, the best-performing economy in Latin America, though the legacy of Pinochet's reforms continues to be in dispute.

Presidente, mi interés se centra en su posición frente al comunismo. Usted es, históricamente, el único que hasta ahora ha logrado derrocar un régimen marxista. Para muchos es Ud. el antimarxista por excelencia. ¿Ha sido siempre antimarxista? ¿Conoce Ud. bien el marxismo?
-Mi repudio a los marxistas-leninistas es producto de mi conocimiento de su doctrina, con la que tomé mis primeros contactos cuando estuve a cargo de los relegados comunistas en Pisagua en enero y parte de febrero de 1948 y, posteriormente, cuando fui Delegado del Jefe de la Zona de Emergencia en el centro carbonífero de Schwager. Allí nuevamente tuve que ocuparme de los comunistas y sus actividades. Más adelante me adentré en el estudio y el análisis de su doctrina y de sus métodos. En esas lecturas observé con preocupación cómo tiende el marxismo a alterar los principios morales que deben sustentar la sociedad, hasta alcanzar su destrucción a fin de sustituirlos por las consignas ideológicas del comunismo.
Así, por espacio de veinte años me fui interiorizando en esa ideología que no vacilo en calificar de siniestra, hasta convencerme finalmente de que la única forma de enfrentar a tan hipócrita y contaminadora doctrina consiste en la fortaleza espiritual y la firmeza y cohesión de quienes la repudian. -Con enorme inquietud recibí el triunfo del candidato de la equivocadamente llamada Unidad Popular, y con creciente angustia presencié cómo en Chile se deterioraba su consistencia social, moral, económica y política. Sin embargo, este proceso no se inició en el gobierno de la Unidad Popular, porque desde tiempo atrás la demagogia venía arrastrando al país hacia su destrucción. En su etapa final, dio la primera mayoría relativa en las urnas a un hombre que reconocía ser marxista-leninista y que, dos meses después, sectores mayoritarios del Congreso designaban Presidente de Chile. Fue un espectáculo muy desconcertante el que dimos al mundo: un país tradicionalmente democrático entregó su libertad a un sector totalitario. No se impuso éste por la fuerza de las armas, como ha sucedido en todos los países en donde gobierna el comunismo, sino que fue entregado por una corriente de la propia democracia.

-Dentro de esta amarga realidad, tan negativa para la Nación, debo considerar que también existió un factor positivo: el triunfo de la Unidad Popular fue la mejor vacuna para el país, ya que grandes sectores quedaron predispuestos a rechazar en el futuro esta doctrina, pero ello se logrará siempre que a las nuevas generaciones se las ilustre de lo que es el comunismo, si no, todo se olvida.

Presidente, mi interés se centra en su posición frente al comunismo. Usted es, históricamente, el único que hasta ahora ha logrado derrocar un régimen marxista. Para muchos es Ud. el antimarxista por excelencia. ¿Ha sido siempre antimarxista? ¿Conoce Ud. bien el marxismo?
-Mi repudio a los marxistas-leninistas es producto de mi conocimiento de su doctrina, con la que tomé mis primeros contactos cuando estuve a cargo de los relegados comunistas en Pisagua en enero y parte de febrero de 1948 y, posteriormente, cuando fui Delegado del Jefe de la Zona de Emergencia en el centro carbonífero de Schwager. Allí nuevamente tuve que ocuparme de los comunistas y sus actividades. Más adelante me adentré en el estudio y el análisis de su doctrina y de sus métodos. En esas lecturas observé con preocupación cómo tiende el marxismo a alterar los principios morales que deben sustentar la sociedad, hasta alcanzar su destrucción a fin de sustituirlos por las consignas ideológicas del comunismo.
Así, por espacio de veinte años me fui interiorizando en esa ideología que no vacilo en calificar de siniestra, hasta convencerme finalmente de que la única forma de enfrentar a tan hipócrita y contaminadora doctrina consiste en la fortaleza espiritual y la firmeza y cohesión de quienes la repudian. The arrest of General Pinochet exposed the frightening hatreds between the political left and right in Chile. While the left reminded the world of Pinochet’s horrific crimes, the right demanded that the horrors be put in their proper context. These were not atrocities, the argument runs, but excesses—what hard men do to restore order and economic success in a harsh environment.
In a Santiago theatre the emotional power-play of torture and disappearances finds expression. But their outlet in Chilean politics is stifled. Pinochet may not be in power anymore, but he certainly made sure his legacy would last. He changed the electoral rules so that the right had a stranglehold on the constitution. And though the democracy is flawed, its economy is the healthiest in South America, another side of the Pinochet legacy. Prosperity has sweetened memories. It helps explain why a solid third of the Chilean people still support a man the world reviles. The right has built memorials to the disappeared. Move on says the right. Don’t look back. Build a country for our children to play. But even if they should, can they stifle the anger of Pinochet’s victims?

From the safety of her Australian exile, she denies charges but her views on torture remain chilling: "Everyone knew they had to do that in order to break them because Communists would not talk. It was necessary". The secrets and brutality of the Pinochet regime are laid bare at Santiago's memory museum. The daughter of one of Rivas' victims, who was beaten to a pulp and then injected with a lethal poison, is now a curator there. As she fights for remembrance and justice, she wonders: "How can a human being be part of this machinery of exterminating people?"

He was Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army from 1973 to 1998. He was also president of the Government Junta of Chile between 1973 and 1981.
Pinochet assumed power in Chile following a United States-backed coup d'état on 11 September 1973 that overthrew the elected socialist Unidad Popular government of President Salvador Allende and ended civilian rule. Several academics have stated that the support of the United States was crucial to the coup and the consolidation of power afterward. Pinochet had been promoted to Commander-in-Chief of the Army by Allende on 23 August 1973, having been its General Chief of Staff since early 1972. In December 1974, the ruling military junta appointed Pinochet President of Chile by joint decree, although not with the support of one of the coup's instigators, Air Force General Gustavo Leigh.
From its beginning, the new military government implemented harsh measures against its perceived opponents. Various reports and investigations claim that between 1,200 and 3,200 people were killed, up to 80,000 people were interned and as many as 30,000 were tortured during the time Pinochet was in government.
Under the influence of the free market-oriented neoliberal "Chicago Boys", the military government implemented economic reforms, including currency stabilization, tariff cutting, opening Chile's markets to global trade, restricting labor unions, privatizing social security, and the privatization of hundreds of state-controlled industries. These policies produced what has been referred to as the "Miracle of Chile," but critics state that the government policies dramatically increased economic inequality. Chile was, for most of the 1990s, the best-performing economy in Latin America, though academics continue to dispute the legacy of Pinochet's reforms.
Pinochet's 17-year rule was given a legal framework through a controversial 1980 plebiscite, which approved a new Constitution drafted by a government-appointed commission. In a 1988 plebiscite 56% voted against Pinochet's continuing as president, which led to democratic elections for the Presidency and Congress. After stepping down in 1990, Pinochet continued to serve as Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army until 10 March 1998, when he retired and became a senator-for-life in accordance with his 1980 Constitution. However, Pinochet was arrested under an international arrest warrant on a visit to London on 10 October 1998 in connection with numerous human rights allegations. Following a legal battle he was released on grounds of ill-health, and returned to Chile in March 2000. In 2004, Chilean Judge Juan Guzmán Tapia ruled that Pinochet was medically fit to stand trial and placed him under house arrest. By the time of his death on 10 December 2006, about 300 criminal charges were still pending against him in Chile for numerous human rights violations during his 17-year rule, and tax evasion and embezzlement during and after his rule; he was accused of having corruptly amassed at least US$28 million.

Allende's involvement in Chilean political life spanned a period of nearly forty years. As a member of the Socialist Party, he was a senator, deputy and cabinet minister. He unsuccessfully ran for the presidency in the 1952, 1958, and 1964 elections. In 1970, he won the presidency in a close three-way race. He was elected in a run-off by Congress as no candidate had gained a majority.
As president, Allende adopted a policy of nationalization of industries and collectivization; due to these and other factors, increasingly strained relations between him and the legislative and judicial branches of the Chilean government – who did not share his enthusiasm for socialization – culminated in a declaration of a "constitutional breakdown" by the congress. A centre-right majority including the Christian Democrats, whose support had enabled Allende's election, denounced his rule as unconstitutional and called for his overthrow by force. On 11 September 1973 the military moved to oust Allende in a coup d'état sponsored by the United States Central Intelligence Agency. As troops surrounded La Moneda Palace, Allende gave his last speech vowing not to resign.
