James David Graham Niven (1 March 1910 – 29 July 1983) was an English actor and novelist who was popular in Europe and in the United States. He may be best known for his roles as Squadron Leader Peter Carter in A Matter of Life and Death, as Phileas Fogg in Around the World in 80 Days and as Sir Charles Lytton, a.k.a. "the Phantom", in The Pink Panther. He was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Separate Tables (1958).
Born in London, Niven attended Heatherdown Preparatory School and Stowe before gaining a place at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. After Sandhurst he joined the British Army and was gazetted a second lieutenant in the Highland Light Infantry. Having developed an interest in acting, he left the Highland Light Infantry, travelled to Hollywood and had several minor roles in film. He first appeared as an extra in the British film There Goes the Bride (1932). From there, he hired an agent and had several small parts in films from 1933 to 1935, including a non-speaking part in MGM's Mutiny on the Bounty. This brought him to wider attention within the film industry and he was spotted by Samuel Goldwyn. Upon the outbreak of the Second World War, Niven returned to Britain and rejoined the army, being re-commissioned as a lieutenant.

Plot: The story of Miser! the Musical starts with Margery Jackson living in Botcherby at the house of Joseph Bowman, her Quaker business manager of 40 years. In February 1812 she has a stroke, which puts the house all in a flurry-her will is unsigned! Recovering slightly, she starts to tell Joseph Bowman about her life before they met. Back in 1762, she bumps into her brother, the Revd. William Jackson, at a political rally. Although initially pleased to see her, he becomes evasive when she mentions visiting him in Carlisle. When she turns up at his house in Scotch Street, she finds out why. Anger flares as she realises he could easily afford to pay her the money that he still owes her from their parents' estates. Turfed out of the house, she disappears. Eleven years later, Margery is staying at Nunnery, near Kirkoswald, with her Aglionby cousins. Learning that William is at Croglin (Low) Hall nearby, she writes to him but receives a rude reply. Margery resolves to take him to court to recover her rightful inheritance. At the Court of Chancery, she is advised that the legal path is not an easy one. Two years into the case, William dies, leaving his estates to his executors and cuts Margery out of his will. At the advice of her attorney, Robert Mounsey, Margery engages Joseph Bowman as her business manager and restarts the court case. Defendants die and the lawyers for the defence conspire against her but eventually, the case draws to its conclusion. Margery returns to Carlisle but she is not welcomed back into society. She grows increasingly miserly and eccentric. As Joseph Bowman attempts to help her complete her will, Margery starts to talk about a secret that she has never told before. In it, she explains how she came to have a court mantua dress made and talks about her hopes and dreams as a young woman who saw the Jacobites march through Carlisle. Yet fate is not kind to her. Returning to 1812, Joseph reveals some information that puts an entirely different light on the events of Margery's early life. And in the final scenes, both Margery and Joseph discover that they stand to lose everything.

Prince Charles Edward Stuart, "the Young Pretender", "Bonnie Prince Charlie" etc was the grandson of the deposed King James II. In 1745 he led the last major Jacobite uprising against the House of Hanover. Landing in Scotland he rallied the highland clans and won several stunning victories. Against all odds he advanced almost to London but turned and retreated to Scotland. His army was wiped out at the battle of Culloden and the prince spent the rest of his life in sorrowful exile.
Low-budget Scottish history film set during the Jacobite rising of 1745, Scotland's last battle against British Imperialism. If you like Jacobite history, buy the book 'Drummossie Moor - Jack Cameron, The Irish Brigade and the Battle of Culloden'. Stars Brian Blessed, and that guy who is in Cracker and Prime Suspect plays the nasty English sergeant. The singer 'Fish' is the only other person asides those two who even looks like an actor in this film. The script is terrible, the soundtrack depressing. As to the film, it is littered with historical inaccuracies and the film is very myopic, anti-Jacobite, Pro-Union, Anti-Catholic and makes the age old mistake of blaming the Jacobites' defeat on the Irish professional soldiers who advised Prince Charles, when in truth it was a simple dispari...

GLENFINNAN - 1745--1756 Prince Charles initially landed from France on Eriskay in the Western Isles. He then travelled to the mainland in a small rowing boat, coming ashore at Loch nan Uamh, just west of Glenfinnan. Here he was met a small number of MacDonalds. He waited at Glenfinnan for a number of days as more MacDonalds, Camerons, McPhees and Macdonnells arrived. When he judged he had enough support, he climbed the hill and the McPhees raised his royal standard, on Monday 19 August 1745, and claimed the Scottish and the English thrones in the name of his father James Stuart ('the Old Pretender'); A MacPhee (Macfie) was one of two pipers at Glenfinnan when Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his banner there in 1745. Brandy was distributed in celebration. So began the rebellion that was to end...

Great film with David Niven and Alberto Sordi. English and Italians face each other in Abissinia during the second world war. You can see the Italian way and the English way :-) The only question at the end will be: why were they fighting against each other ?

Available on DVD from http://www.odeonent.co.uk Filmed during the dark days of 1942, this is the immortal story of the Spitfire which had helped to win the Battle of Britain the previous year. Leslie Howard stars as R.J. Mitchell, the inventor of the Spitfire, whose aircraft designs were turned down for funding by Whitehall because they were too revolutionary. A chance meeting with Messerschmitt in the early 1930's gives Mitchell the inspiration to build Britain's fastest and deadliest fighter plane. But first he must find a devil-may-care pilot to risk his life on the test flights. Salvation comes in the form of Geoffrey Crisp (David Niven), an out of work veteran fighter pilot from the First World War. Together they build the aircraft that so many will owe their lives to. However, as Mi...
If you like this song, please support my artistic work by liking and sharing this video, as well as following me or buying my music at Bandcamp: http://hakon1.bandcamp.com/music Though this may sound like a traditional Scottish tune, but it is my own composition. I live practically next door to Culloden battlefield of Jacobite Uprising fame, where in 1746, the Stuarts' highly legitimate claim to the throne of Britain was finally thwarted when forces loyal to Charles Edward Stuart – more commonly referred to as Bonnie Prince Charlie – faced their final defeat against the mostly English soldiers supporting the new Hanoverian dynasty. I wasn't intending to create a composition about this, but when I wrote this energetic Scottish-sounding piece, this was the first thing that came to mind. ...

A tune by Neil Gow more commonly known as Cam ye by Atholl.
An old, sweet lullaby I learned from Ed McCurdy's album of children's songs long ago. "My bonnie" probably refers to Bonnie Prince Charlie, exiled from Britain after the '45 Scottish Rising. It is a popular tune used for many other songs and parodies.
