Now playing in theaters is Brad Bird‘s Tomorrowland. The film stars George Clooney as Frank, a disillusioned boy-genius who teams up with the optimistic and scientifically-inclined Casey (Britt Robertson) to discover the secrets of the enigmatic place known as “Tomorrowland”. The film also stars Hugh Laurie, Tim McGraw, Judy Greer, Kathryn Hahn, Keegan-Michael Key, and Thomas Robinson, and was written by Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen.
At the recent Los Angeles press day I landed an exclusive video interview with Brad Bird. He talked about his first cut of the film, test screenings, deleted scenes, how they landed Clooney, why he made Tomorrowland over helming Star Wars, the status of The Incredibles 2, the possibility of The Iron Giant returning to theaters (I’ve heard it’s happening), and a lot more. If you’re a fan of this gifted director I think you’re going to dig what he had to say.

In 2008 as Frank Miller's live action feature film based on Will Eisner's "The Spirit" was being released I wrote a piece for the Los Angeles Times on the time, back in 1980, when I became involved with Brad Bird and Gary Kurtz (producer of the first two "Star Wars" movies) in trying to get into production an animated feature based on "The Spirit" In that piece, which you can read here: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/uncategorized/the-spirit-that/ I spoke of a pencil test "trailer" for the our proposed film that was made by Bird along with several classmates from Cal Arts, most of whom were working at Disney at the time. Quite a few people who read the article contacted me about seeing the film. I did have it on an old VHS, but it was deep in storage at the time plus as I did not really own the film, I told them they would have to look elsewhere to find a copy. Later, I found the VHS and put it aside. Recently Andrea Fiamma, an Italian journalist writing on the subject for the website Fumettologica," asked again if the film could be seen. As it is a small piece of animation history, I've decided to post it here.

A new Incredibles movie is on its way and writer/director Brad Bird is sharing new info on the status of the sequel and what we can expect plus details on his possible involvement in the Star Wars franchise! Today’s episode of Clevver News Feed is brought to you by Pitch Perfect 2, in theaters May 15th! When it comes to Pixar movies and films in general for that matter, there’s one that fans have been wanting a sequel to for years and that is, 2004’s The Incredibles. The tale of a superhero family is one of the most beloved and also one of the studio’s most financially successful films, so a sequel was practically inevitable and fans will finally be getting their wish, but what’s the status of the sequel? While promoting his new film, Tomorrowland, The Incredibles writer/director Brad Bird revealed to Collider that he’s currently in the process of working on the script and already has some pages written saying quote, “I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie.” He went on to say that it feels like The Incredibles 2 will be his next film after Tomorrowland which, depending on how long the writing process takes, means we could potentially see part 2 arriving in theaters as early as 2017 with 2018 seeming more likely. Of course, an Incredibles sequel may have to compete for Brad Bird’s attention with another big franchise. With Josh Trank no longer directing the 2018 Star Wars Anthology project that is rumored to focus on Boba Fett, Bird was asked if we could potentially see him take over that film to which he responded quote, “Well [LucasFilm President] Kathy [Kennedy] and I have discussed the possibility of—I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it. I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up and—J.J. got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too. But I kind of—I’m writing a sequel to The Incredibles and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.” So it sounds like Bird has had some serious discussions about taking on one of the upcoming Star Wars films, which doesn’t come as too much of a surprise considering he was at one point considering directing Episode 7 while at the same time attempting to bring Tomorrowland to the big screen, but ultimately decided it would be too much. We’ll have to wait and see what he decides to do, but which would you rather see him direct next - The Incredibles 2 or one of the Star Wars films? Phillip Bradley "Brad" Bird (born September 24, 1957) is a critically acclaimed American director, screenwriter, animator, voice actor and producer. He is best known for having written and directed Warner Bros.' The Iron Giant (1999), and Pixar's The Incredibles (2004) and Ratatouille (2007). He made his live-action film directing debut with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011).
All of Bird's films have received universal acclaim (or in the case of The Iron Giant, grown in popularity with time). On Rotten Tomatoes, his four films average a 95.75% rating, making him one of the most acclaimed living filmmakers, animated or otherwise.
Bird was born in Kalispell, Montana, the youngest of four children of Marjorie A. (née Cross) and Philip Cullen Bird. His father worked in the propane business, and his grandfather, Francis Wesley "Frank" Bird, who was born in Sligo, Ireland, was a president and chief executive of the Montana Power Company. On a tour of the Walt Disney Studios at age 11, he announced that someday he would become part of its animation team, and soon afterward began work on his own 15-minute animated short. Within two years, Bird had completed his animation, which impressed the cartoon company. By age 14, barely in high school, Bird was mentored by the animator Milt Kahl, one of Disney’s legendary Nine Old Men. Bird recalls Kahl's criticisms as ideal: Kahl would point out shortcomings by gently delivering thoughts on where Bird could improve. After graduating from Corvallis High School in Corvallis, Oregon in 1975, Bird took a three-year break. He was then awarded a scholarship by Disney to attend California Institute of the Arts, where he met and befriended another future animator, Pixar co-founder and director John Lasseter.

In 2008 as Frank Miller's live action feature film based on Will Eisner's "The Spirit" was being released I wrote a piece for the Los Angeles Times on the time, back in 1980, when I became involved with Brad Bird and Gary Kurtz (producer of the first two "Star Wars" movies) in trying to get into production an animated feature based on "The Spirit" In that piece, which you can read here: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/uncategorized/the-spirit-that/ I spoke of a pencil test "trailer" for the our proposed film that was made by Bird along with several classmates from Cal Arts, most of whom were working at Disney at the time. He talked about his first cut of the film, test screenings, deleted scenes, how they landed Clooney, why he made Tomorrowland over helming Star Wars, the status of The Incredibles 2, the possibility of The Iron Giant returning to theaters (I’ve heard it’s happening), and a lot more. In 2008 as Frank Miller's live action feature film based on Will Eisner's "The Spirit" was being released I wrote a piece for the Los Angeles Times on the time, back in 1980, when I became involved with Brad Bird and Gary Kurtz (producer of the first two "Star Wars" movies) in trying to get into production an animated feature based on "The Spirit" In that piece, which you can read here: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/uncategorized/the-spirit-that/ I spoke of a pencil test "trailer" for the our proposed film that was made by Bird along with several classmates from Cal Arts, most of whom were working at Disney at the time. Quite a few people who read the article contacted me about seeing the film. I did have it on an old VHS, but it was deep in storage at the time plus as I did not really own the film, I told them they would have to look elsewhere to find a copy. Later, I found the VHS and put it aside. Recently Andrea Fiamma, an Italian journalist writing on the subject for the website Fumettologica," asked again if the film could be seen. As it is a small piece of animation history, I've decided to post it here.

A new Incredibles movie is on its way and writer/director Brad Bird is sharing new info on the status of the sequel and what we can expect plus details on his possible involvement in the Star Wars franchise! Today’s episode of Clevver News Feed is brought to you by Pitch Perfect 2, in theaters May 15th! When it comes to Pixar movies and films in general for that matter, there’s one that fans have been wanting a sequel to for years and that is, 2004’s The Incredibles. The tale of a superhero family is one of the most beloved and also one of the studio’s most financially successful films, so a sequel was practically inevitable and fans will finally be getting their wish, but what’s the status of the sequel? While promoting his new film, Tomorrowland, The Incredibles writer/director Brad Bird revealed to Collider that he’s currently in the process of working on the script and already has some pages written saying quote, “I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like. I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie.” He went on to say that it feels like The Incredibles 2 will be his next film after Tomorrowland which, depending on how long the writing process takes, means we could potentially see part 2 arriving in theaters as early as 2017 with 2018 seeming more likely. Of course, an Incredibles sequel may have to compete for Brad Bird’s attention with another big franchise. With Josh Trank no longer directing the 2018 Star Wars Anthology project that is rumored to focus on Boba Fett, Bird was asked if we could potentially see him take over that film to which he responded quote, “Well [LucasFilm President] Kathy [Kennedy] and I have discussed the possibility of—I mean she’s basically saying this is a very large sandbox and other people can play in it. I was particularly attracted to the idea of picking up and—J.J. got very excited about the notion of shaping the next trilogy, and that idea was interesting to me too. But I kind of—I’m writing a sequel to The Incredibles and I can’t think too much farther beyond that. I have other things I want to do as well.” So it sounds like Bird has had some serious discussions about taking on one of the upcoming Star Wars films, which doesn’t come as too much of a surprise considering he was at one point considering directing Episode 7 while at the same time attempting to bring Tomorrowland to the big screen, but ultimately decided it would be too much. We’ll have to wait and see what he decides to do, but which would you rather see him direct next - The Incredibles 2 or one of the Star Wars films? No group has yet claimed responsibility for the Medina attack or two other attacks in the kingdom on the same day — one near the U.S. Consulate in Jiddah and the other at a Shiite mosque in the east of the country. The bomber has been identified as 34-year-old Abdullah Qalzar Khan, an Interior Ministry statement said. He lived in the nearby Red Sea port city of Jiddah with “his wife and her parents.” The statement didn’t elaborate....
