Campania - Southern Italy's Historic Winemaking Region - Trailer
Italy's Campania region must be its most mystical wine region. Its Greek and Roman history is staggering. In fact, it is the Greeks who are said to have first brought vines to the region in the 13th century BC. This is why some of the popular wines of the region hark back to such history with names such as Greco de Tufo.
Naples is the most important city in the region of Campania as the capital. However, Pompeii holds a special place in the ambience of Campania's wine due to its historical significance overall. I first traveled to Campania and Pompeii in 1983, and I felt something very special about the region as a young wine critic. The feeling is the same today.
Enjoy this trailer on coming videos and a tasting report on the region from a trip last summer to Campania. Note the scenes from Pompeii of Roman ruins and mummified bodies. The interviews with vintner Piero Mastroberadino about his family's work to document and preserve the wines and history of the region of Campania are also extremely important.

Italian FM visits southern suburbs with Hezbollah MP and Lebanese FM Salloukh
1. Various of Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema inspecting the destruction with Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh and Hezbollah MP Hussein al-Haj Hassan
2. Various of destruction
STORYLINE:
Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema toured the destruction of south Beirut, hours after a UN ceasefire went into effect at 8 a.m. local time (0500GMT) on Monday.
Thirty four days of an Israeli nationwide aerial bombardment and ground offensive has left Lebanon facing reconstruction that could takes years and cost billions of dollars to restore as well as counting its dead - the government says more than 1000 people have perished in the assault.
D'Alema inspected the damage with the Lebanese Foreign Minister Fawzi Salloukh and Hezbollah member of parliament Hussein al-Haj Hassan.
Beirut's southern suburbs took a final pounding from Israel in the final hours before the ceasefire went into effect.
Half an hour after the ceasefire took hold, Israeli warplanes, a regular fixture in Lebanese skies during the month-long war, were absent.
Some people displaced by the conflict began to return to their villages.
The ceasefire agreement adopted on Friday called on Israel to cease all offensive military operations, but Israel made it clear it reserved the right to protect its soldiers and is remaining on Lebanese soil.
The military also said it was maintaining its air and sea blockade of Lebanon to prevent Hezbollah from rearming.

STORYLINE
Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi met with rival Lebanese political leaders on Sunday as part of a one-day trip that also took him to the southern part of the country to visit Italian peacekeepers stationed there.
With 2,500 troops, Rome is the leading contributor to the U.N. peacekeeping force, known as UNIFIL, monitoring the truce that ended a month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
Around 10,000 UNIFIL troops patrol a buffer zone in southern Lebanon alongside an estimated 17,000 Lebanese soldiers.
The force is mandated to go up to a maximum of 15,000.
The Italian contingent is based at the town of Tibnine, located about 15 kilometres, (9.5 miles), north of the Israeli border.
Speaking in Tibnine, Prodi thanked the Italian troops for their efforts and had Christmas Eve dinner with the soldiers.
"I can tell you that the whole country is with you. It follows your efforts, your presence, your mission. Today I have come to you to bring you season's greetings, but also to bring you gratitude of the entire Italian nation," he said.
Italy is due to take over the command of UNIFIL from France in February.

STORYLINE
A United Nations spokesman said on Sunday he hoped investigators would "leave no stone unturned" in trying to find an Italian photojournalist and his translator kidnapped in Afghanistan.
Gabriele Torsello, a freelance photographer, and his Afghan translator were abducted by five armed men on Saturday as they were driving from Lashkar Gah, the capital of the southern Helmand province, toward neighbouring Kandahar, an official in Helmand said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media.
The two were in their car when they were abducted, the official said.
Torsello earlier spent time in Musa Qala, another restive area in Helmand province, the official said.
A week ago, two German journalists were killed in northern Afghanistan - the first foreign journalists murdered in the country since late 2001.
Aleem Seddique, a UN spokesman in Kabul, said on Sunday they were aware of the abduction.
"Coming so soon after the tragic incident involving the two German journalists who were killed in Baghlan province, I think this is a matter of great concern for all the international community and also for the Afghan authorities," he said.
"We look forward to hearing some positive news from the Afghan authorities in the near future, but we are monitoring the situation closely," he said.
Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, who claims to speak for the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, denied that militants had abducted the Italian photojournalist.
Ahamdi, whose exact ties to the Taliban are not known, told an AP reporter in Kandahar in a phone call from an undisclosed location that Torsello had spent some time with Taliban fighters in Musa Qala who showed him the area.
The Italian ambassador in Kabul told Italian state radio on Sunday morning that Italian Foreign Ministry officials were in Afghanistan working on the
case.
Maso Notarianni, the director of Italian online magazine Peace Reporter, told Italian state TV that Torsello had called a hospital in Lashkar Gah,
apparently to let authorities know he was kidnapped.
Notarianni said until Thursday Torsello was in the deep south of Afghanistan, in Taliban-controlled territory.
The southern provinces of Helmand and Kandahar have been the scene of some the most intense fighting between Taliban and NATO troops this year, in the worst upsurge in violence in the country since the US-led invasion in 2001 that ousted the Taliban regime from power.

STORYLINE
The beefed-up peacekeeping force in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, began to take shape as the last contingent of Italian soldiers left their base and headed towards Tyre on Monday.
The Italian contingent is the first large contingent of international troops dispatched to help safeguard a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas.
"They are building the camp, we've brought all our equipment ashore," said Lieutenant Alexandro Miglietta. "Our troops' spirits are high, we are very proud to be part of such an operation," he added.
Soldiers and other personnel were seen repainting French army vehicles the UN colour of white, with the letters UN also added.
"The French troops which were rapidly deployed to UNIFIL came coloured in camouflage colours and they (vehicles) have to be repainted to the UN colours, which is white and the UN logo has to be painted on them," said UN spokesman Alex Ivnco.
Italy's pledge of 2,500 troops for the peacekeeping force is the largest yet.
Most of the first 1,000 that began arriving on Saturday will move to positions 12 miles (19.3 kilometres) inland from Tyre, according to the Italian Defence Ministry.
The first to arrive were around 150 Italian marines toting automatic weapons and wearing blue berets, brought in gray UN helicopters to a Tyre luxury hotel to secure two beaches where the remainder of an 880-member battalion off the coast in warships had been scheduled to land on Saturday.
Only part of the force was able to make it to shore due to high waves on Saturday.
Some vehicles and equipment were diverted further south to Naqoura.
The Italian contingent will bring the total number of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon to 3,250, including the 2,000 previous UNIFIL troops and 250 French troops who arrived last week.
Under the cease-fire plan, 15,000 Lebanese soldiers were also to be deployed to assert control over the Hezbollah stronghold south of the Litani River and to prevent arms from reaching the guerrillas.

STORYLINE:
A rubbish emergency has left tons of garbage laying along the streets in cities around Naples as waste collection was interrupted days ago due to a problem with the main dump in the area.
The dump is saturated beyond limits and cannot contain any more waste unless action is taken to eliminate or intervene with recycling procedures.
Residents and tourists in towns like the one seen here, Ercolano, 20 kilometres (12 miles) south of Naples, are beginning to suffer from the build-up.
Piles of rubbish in town squares - and outside flats and shops are posing a threat to residents' health, the environment and tourism.
People in southern Italy began burning garbage on Wednesday night to help eliminate the growing quantities.
More than one thousand wheelie-bins and trash containers were set on fire, causing hundreds of thousands Euros worth of damage.
Local authorities are searching for solutions to the crisis, mostly by looking for alternative dumps and directing waste to other areas.
There have been talks about transporting garbage to Germany as a possible solution.
The crisis is not new in the Naples region.
Dumps in the Naples region are often full, and residents frequently organise protests to block the roads to stop waste trucks from reaching the dumps.
The problem is exacerbated by the involvement of the so-called "eco-mafia", the organised trafficking of tens of millions of garbage a year.
Italy produces some 80 (m) million tons of waste a year, ordinary and toxic.
Allegedly some 35 (m) million tons are handled by criminal organisations which deal with waste collection, elimination and recycling.

Inspired by the field work of Lomax, David Marker, a young field recorder, Italian American and NYU student, has made a significant effort to document what remains of this music today. In comparing the recordings of Lomax to contemporary recordings, a picture of changing cultural identity and values becomes apparent. This presentation showcases a handful of select recordings from Lomax's 1954 trip as well as a number of recordings from Marker's contemporary work. Additionally, Marker and another Italian American musician, Dominic Porco, perform live music rarely heard in the US. Alan Lomax's daughter, Anna Lomax Wood, director of the Associat

Southern Italy
Southern Italy
Southern Italy or Mezzogiorno (Italian pronunciation: [mɛddzoˈdʒorno], literally "midday") is the traditional term for the southern regions of Italy, encompassing the southern section of the continental Italian Peninsula and the island of Sicily. It coincides with the administrative regions of Abruzzo, Apulia, Basilicata, Campania, Calabria, Molise, and Sicily. Some also include the most southern and eastern parts of Lazio (Sora, Cassino, Gaeta, Cittaducale and Amatrice districts) within the Mezzogiorno, because these territories were also part of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. Greeks in Italy GREEK EMPIRE | HISTORY of GREECE
Greek presence in Italy begins with the migrations of the old Greek Diaspora in the 8th century BC, continuing down to the present time. There is a linguistic minority known as the Griko people, who live in the Southern Italian regions of Calabria (Province of Reggio Calabria) and Apulia, especially the peninsula of Salento, within the old Magna Graecia region, who speak a distinctive dialect of Greek called Griko. They are believed to be remnants of the ancient and medieval Greek communities, who have lived in the south of Italy for centuries. Alongside this group, a smaller number of more recent migrants from Greece lives in Italy, forming

Travel video about destination Napoli.
Napoli is the capital of Campania in southern Italy where hustle and bustle combines with serenity and joie de vivre. The Centro Storico Monumentale is located around the harbour and the Piazza Del Plebiscito embodies both grandeur and vastness, in contrast to the narrow confines of the old town. Close to the harbour is the mighty Castel Nuovo, its graceful entrance arch seemingly hemmed-in by two awkward-looking towers. Its construction began during the reign of Charles The First but Alfons Of Aragon subsequently had the castle completely rebuilt. From the centre of the town a small causeway leads to

Alan Lomax's daughter, Anna Lomax Wood, director of the Association for Cultural Equity, and who was in Italy in 1954 with her father, takes part in the discussion.

The island of Sardinia, although for cultural and historical reasons has little in common with the aforementioned regions, is sometimes included for statistical and economical purposes. Southern Italy carries a unique legacy of culture. It features many major tourist attractions, such as the Palace of Caserta, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and other archaeological sites (many of which are protected by UNESCO). There are also many ancient Greek cities in Southern Italy, such as Sybaris, which were founded several centuries before the start of the Roman Republic. Some of its beaches, woodlands and mountains are preserved in several National Parks; a major example is La Sila, a mountainous plateau occupying the provinces of Cosenza and Catanzaro in the region of Calabria. The Istituto Nazionale di Statistica (ISTAT) uses the term South Italy also for identifying one of the five statistical regions in its reporting, but excluding both Sicily and Sardinia, which form a distinct statistical region denominated Insular Italy. These same subdivisions are at the bottom of the Italian First level NUTS of the European Union and the Italian constituencies for the European Parliament.

Alongside this group, a smaller number of more recent migrants from Greece lives in Italy, forming an expatriate community in the country. Today many Greeks in Southern Italy follow Italian customs and culture.
In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, for various reasons, including demographic crisis (famine, overcrowding, climate change, etc.), the search for new commercial outlets and ports, and expulsion from their homeland, Greeks began a large colonization drive, including southern Italy.
In this same time, Greek colonies were established in places as widely separated as the eastern coast of the Black Sea and Massalia (Marseille). They included settlements in Sicily and the southern part of the Italian peninsula. The Romans called the area of Sicily and the foot of the boot of Italy Magna Graecia (Latin, "Greater Greece"), since it was so densely inhabited by Greeks. The ancient geographers differed on whether the term included Sicily or merely Apulia and Calabria — Strabo being the most prominent advocate of the wider definitions.

From the centre of the town a small causeway leads to the tiny island of Borgo Santa Lucia. The island is dominated by a building which in ancient times was the residence of Lucullus, namely the Castel Dell´Ovo, the oldest fortress in Naples. The Via Partenope, with its magnificent buildings and luxury hotels on the coast near Santa Lucia, developed by land reclamation in the nineteenth century. A walk along the Caracciolo coastal road towards Mergellina passes the Parco Communale with palm trees, sculptures and fountains. Measuring four square kilometres, Procida is the smallest island off Naples, densely populated and with a long history and the picturesque Marina Grande at the Cattolocio Ferry Port typifies relaxed island life. Ischia, the island of Titan Tiphoios, is the largest of the three islands in the Gulf Of Naples, each one now being a very popular tourist destination. "A piece of heaven that fell to Earth”, that is how the Neapolitans rightly refer to their beautiful city and its surroundings.

Earlier Letta met with Lebanese officials where they discussed the security at the Lebanese/Israeli border and the situation in the neighbouring Syria.

In spite of my mental blackout, 103 PD and an injured ankle, I ended up 3th in MM SSP and 7th of 49 leaving just 7 seconds from the first place. Overall, I'm quite happy with that.

Alan Lomax's daughter, Anna Lomax Wood, director of the Association for Cultural Equity, and who was in Italy in 1954 with her father, takes part in the discussion.
