Abalone porridge (jeonbokjuk) is known as the “king of porridges” in Korea. Not only is it creamy, savory, delicious, hearty and satisfying, but because they live on the rocks on the bottom of the ocean, abalones are incredibly lean and have almost no fat. They are full of good minerals like iron and calcium and have a ton of vitamins, too. It’s hard to beat abalone porridge for taste, nutrition, and making you feel warm and satisfied.

So Alex picked the absolute best weekend to visit Northern California. The goal was to spear some fish and grab some abalone. We did just that! The water was amazingly clear. I could find lingcod and cabezone from the surface as well as plenty of rockfish and abalone. I dove for 3 days straight and I really hated to leave. It was paradise up there.

Abalone (
i/ˈæbəloʊniː/ or /ˌæbəˈloʊniː/; from the Spanish abulón), and from the (Rumsen) aulón, is a common name for any of a group of small to very large edible sea snails, marine gastropod molluscs in the family Haliotidae. Other common names are ear-shells, sea ears, as well as muttonfish or muttonshells in Australia, ormer in Great Britain, perlemoen and venus's-ears in South Africa and pāua in New Zealand.
The family Haliotidae contains only one genus, Haliotis. That genus contains about four to seven subgenera. The number of species recognized worldwide ranges between 30 and 130 with over 200 species-level taxa described. The most comprehensive treatment of the family considers 56 species valid, with 18 additional subspecies.
The shells of abalones have a low and open spiral structure, and are characterized by several open respiratory pores in a row near the shell's outer edge. The thick inner layer of the shell is composed of nacre or mother-of-pearl, which in many species is highly iridescent, giving rise to a range of strong and changeable colors, which make the shells attractive to humans as decorative objects, and as a source of colorful mother-of-pearl.

We veer off the beaten path and chose to make something that many people haven't tried before. This week we're making Abalone sushi. Abalone is a delicacy, because they're hard to find and very expensive. To find/hunt them, you need to free dive off the coast and traveling sometimes 75'; the possibilities that you could black out while diving for them is a common thing. You can only have 3 in your possession at anytime and you'll need to tag them and show where you got it too. Of course there are poachers out there but if caught, you could face some Federal charges. Abalone is a sea snail; they have foot and stomach and act like a snail but underwater. There are many great videos on YouTube that you can enjoy watching so take the time and watch them. Found mostly in the Asian restaurants, look for it and give it a try and let us know what you think of the taste. So Alex picked the absolute best weekend to visit Northern California. The goal was to spear some fish and grab some abalone. We did just that! The water was amazingly clear. I could find lingcod and cabezone from the surface as well as plenty of rockfish and abalone. I dove for 3 days straight and I really hated to leave. It was paradise up there. We veer off the beaten path and chose to make something that many people haven't tried before. This week we're making Abalone sushi. Abalone is a delicacy, because they're hard to find and very expensive. To find/hunt them, you need to free dive off the coast and traveling sometimes 75'; the possibilities that you could black out while diving for them is a common thing. You can only have 3 in your possession at anytime and you'll need to tag them and show where you got it too. Of course there are poachers out there but if caught, you could face some Federal charges. Sonoma Abalone Diving 5-8-13
First time out for the new season to slay some snails and thought I'd scout out a new spot. The water finally calmed down enough to make the drive to the coast and it paid off with flat conditions and 10-15 foot visibility with almost no wind. I got a little too excited popping my first ab since last Oct and it was a runt at 7.75 inches but I made up for it with a couple of hefty 8.5 and 8.75 inch meals. Scoured the area for fish, but nothing worthy was to be found so I stuck a 13 inch blue rockfish on the way in that became my dinner that night. Oh, and found a shiny new stainless ab bar on the way in that will be my new backup ab bar. lol All in all it was a great day and a good start to the new season. I do need to note however that 6 divers have already lost their lives this ... -

First time out for the new season to slay some snails and thought I'd scout out a new spot. The water finally calmed down enough to make the drive to the coast...
First time out for the new season to slay some snails and thought I'd scout out a new spot. The water finally calmed down enough to make the drive to the coast and it paid off with flat conditions and 10-15 foot visibility with almost no wind. I got a little too excited popping my first ab since last Oct and it was a runt at 7.75 inches but I made up for it with a couple of hefty 8.5 and 8.75 inch meals. Scoured the area for fish, but nothing worthy was to be found so I stuck a 13 inch blue rockfish on the way in that became my dinner that night. Oh, and found a shiny new stainless ab bar on the way in that will be my new backup ab bar. lol All in all it was a great day and a good start to the new season.
I do need to note however that 6 divers have already lost their lives this season not far from here, and one very close to here, so be safe when you dive and don't go if conditions are not friendly. No need to add more risk to an already risky sport.
