The Potholes Reservoir is part of the Columbia Basin Irrigation Project. It is formed by the O'Sullivan Dam and located in central Washington, in the United States. The reservoir is fed by water from Moses Lake, part of the Crab Creek basin.
The area features several lakes (typically 30-70 yards wide and 10–30 feet deep). These lakes, known as "potholes" were created through both natural and man made processes. The potholes were initially carved out during the Pleistocene by flood waters originating from Glacial Lake Missoula. Subsequent damming of the area by the Columbia Basin Project raised the water table high enough to allow these topographical depressions to become lakes.
Also known as:
On the shore of the reservoir is Potholes State Park, a 640-acre (2.6 km2) member of the Washington State Park System. It has 600 feet (180 m) of shoreline on the reservoir.
A pothole is a type of failure in an asphalt pavement, caused by the presence of water in the underlying soil structure and the presence of traffic passing over the affected area. Introduction of water to the underlying soil structure first weakens the supporting soil. Traffic then fatigues and breaks the poorly supported asphalt surface in the affected area. Continued traffic action ejects both asphalt and the underlying soil material to create a hole in the pavement.
According to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers publication, Pothole primer—A public administrator's guide to understanding and managing the pothole problem, (Eaton, et al.), pothole formation requires two factors to be present at the same time: water and traffic. Water weakens the soil beneath the pavement; traffic applies the loads that stress the pavement past the breaking point. Potholes form progressively, first from fatigue of the road surface, which can lead to a precursor failure pattern known as crocodile cracking. Finally, chunks of pavement between the fatigue cracks gradually work loose, and may eventually be plucked or forced out of the surface by continued wheel loads to create a pothole.
A reservoir (etymology: from French réservoir a "storehouse" ) is an enlarged natural or artificial lake, storage pond or impoundment created using a dam or lock to store water. Reservoirs can be created by controlling a stream that drains an existing body of water. They can also be constructed in river valleys using a dam. Alternately, a reservoir can be built by excavating flat ground and/or constructing retaining walls and levees.
Tank reservoirs store liquids or gases in storage tanks that may be elevated, at grade level, or buried. Tank reservoirs for water are also called cisterns.
Underground reservoirs store almost exclusively water and petroleum below ground.
A dam constructed in a valley relies on the natural topography to provide most of the basin of the reservoir. Dams are typically located at a narrow part of a valley downstream of a natural basin. The valley sides act as natural walls, with the dam located at the narrowest practical point to provide strength and the lowest cost of construction. In many reservoir construction projects, people have to be moved and re-housed, historical artifacts moved or rare environments relocated. Examples are the temples of Abu Simbel (which were moved before the construction of the Aswan Dam to create Lake Nasser from the Nile in Egypt), the relocation of the village of Capel Celyn during the construction of Llyn Celyn, and the relocation of Borgo San Pietro of Petrella Salto during the construction of Lake Salto.

I drove a car through Kyrgyzstan once. It was a sport utility vehicle, a good-natured mass of steel, glass and plastic, and it did pretty well on the mountain roads with their mudholes and potholes. One time I got it stuck in a ditch though, and it somehow ripped the exhaust pipe, causing the poor thing to become unbearably loud. Heads would turn, making driving a bit of an embarrassment. But it was a good car anyway. The country felt like a dream. There were long winding roads with panoramic views. There were cows gazing into the distance. Horses and sheep. Blossoms covered with ice. When I arrived in Arslanbob, the walnut groves were covered in snow. The lake Chatyr-Kul turned out to be behind a border checkpoint that required a special permit and only allowed visits for a limited time...

This is a scenic drive around a reservoir, it takes about an hour or so to get around and the track is a flat, potholed track, unchallenging to anything other than road cars (and probably not even those). Note that despite being shown on the map as a byway, Julian said it's not normally drivable but we obtained permission from the tenant farmer to drive the lane. I suspect the issue with drivig this lane may be the old district boundary issue, towards the end of the lane it goes through a district boundary and loses all access rights after the ford, so check with the local authority, you might be able to drive it up to the ford then turn around. It's worth it if you have an eye for scenery, so take the cameras. IanR 3rd May 2008
