Will Shetterly (born 1955) is an American writer of fantasy and science fiction best known for his novel Dogland (1997). The novel is inspired by his childhood at the tourist attraction Dog Land owned by his parents.^[1] He won the Minnesota Book Award for Fantasy & Science Fiction for his novel Elsewhere (1991),^[2] and was a finalist with Nevernever (1993);^[3] both books are set in Terri Windling's The Borderland Series shared universe. He has also written short stories for various Borderland anthologies.

Will Shetterly and Emma Bull

Together with his wife Emma Bull, he created and edited the Liavek shared universe anthologies. There are five Liavek books extant.

Bull and Shetterly live in Minneapolis,MN.

Shetterly created the comic book character Captain Confederacy, played a small role in the film Toxic Zombies, and ran for governor of Minnesota in 1994 on the Grassroots Party ticket. He placed third out of six candidates.^[1]

He was a member of the writing group The Scribblies, which included Emma Bull, Pamela Dean, Kara Dalkey, Nate Bucklin, Patricia Wrede and Steven Brust.

In 2009, he donated his archive to the department of Rare Books and Special Collections at Northern Illinois University.^[4]

Holly Black née Riggenbach^[2] (born November 10, 1971) is an American writer and editor, best known for writing The Spiderwick Chronicles, a series of children's fantasy books she created with illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi.

Early life and education[link]

Black was born in West Long Branch, New Jersey^[2] in 1971, and during her early years her family lived in a "decrepit Victorian house."^[3] Black graduated with a B.A. in English from The College of New Jersey in 1994. She worked as a production editor on medical journals including The Journal of Pain while studying at Rutgers University. She considered becoming a librarian as a backup career, but writing drew her away.

She married her high school sweetheart, Theo Black, himself an accomplished illustrator and web designer, in 1999.^[2]

As of 2008^[update], Black resides in Amherst, Massachusetts.^[4]

Literary career[link]

Black edited and contributed to the role-playing culture magazine d8 in 1996.^[5]

Her first novel, Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale, was published in 2002. Her novella The Wrath of Mulgarath reached the top of the New York Times Bestseller list in 2004.^[3]

Valiant : A Modern Tale of Faerie was a finalist for the Mythopoeic Award, and the recipient of the 2005 Andre Norton Award.^[3] Other novels since these include Ironside: A Modern Faery's Tale, which debuted on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Adaptations[link]

Black is co-executive producer of a film adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles, released in February 2008.^[6] The film covers the entirety of the novel series.

The Spiderwick Chronicles has also been released as a video game from Stormfront Studios.

Ellen Kushner is an American writer of fantasy novels, who for many years was the host of the radio program Sound & Spirit, produced by WGBH in Boston and distributed by Public Radio International^[1].

Background and personal life[link]

Kushner was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. She lives in New York City with her wife and sometime collaborator, Delia Sherman (they were married in 1996^[2][3]).

Writing career[link]

Kushner's first books were four Choose Your Own Adventure gamebooks, after which her first novel, Swordspoint was published in 1987. Swordspoint and its sequel (co-authored by Sherman) The Fall of the Kings (2002), are mannerpunk novels set in a nameless imaginary capital city and its raffish district of Riverside, where swordsmen-for-hire ply their trade. She has written another sequel set 18 years after Swordspoint, called The Privilege of the Sword, which was published in July 2006. A hardcover first of The Privilege of the Sword was published in late August 2006 by Small Beer Press.

Kushner's second novel, Thomas the Rhymer, won the World Fantasy Award^[4] and the Mythopoeic Award^[5] in 1991. She has also published short stories and poetry in various anthologies, including The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror and The Borderland Series of urban fantasy anthologies for teenage readers.

In 2002, she released a CD of her story "The Golden Dreydl: A Klezmer Nutcracker," which uses music from Pyotr Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker" to tell a Hanukkah story. The music on the CD is performed by Shirim Klezmer Orchestra. "The Golden Dreydl" won a Gracie Award from American Women in Radio and Television.^[6]

With Sherman and others, she is actively involved in the Interstitial art movement. She is also a member of the Endicott Studio.
